After only 8 months with the Tesla Model S 70D, I sold it.
I initially got it by taking over someone’s lease because I wanted to see if I liked the electric car thing or if it was a royal pain in the ass. I liked the car, liked the concept but wasn’t sure and didn’t want to buy something crazy expensive only to have it be a waste. Here in Ontario our sales tax or 13% applies to just about everything, including used cars.
So the lease was short enough that if I wanted to walk away I wouldn’t have to wait too long. The neat thing is TEsla prices their leases poorly…basically they set the residual FAR too low (the regular cars don’t depreciate nearly as quickly as the lease prices them too) so the buyback is always low and the lease cost is always too high. As a result don’t lease a new Tesla. Take someone’s over from leasebusters in canada or from swapalease in america. If you find one that’s only a year or so to go, you’ll be in good shape because the payments+buyback at the end will likely be below market value and you’ll be inheriting the equity the previous lessee.
Anyway, after 8 months I decided that I liked the car a lot, and the concept even more, so I decided to look for a replacement for it. Found one from Tesla (pre-owned) and bought out/traded in the white Model S 70D and rolled the big chunk of equity I had into the price of the new car.
Bought a P90D (the older style as this has the best autopilot and is still a bit ahead of the refreshed ones with respect to some of the features. Price helps too. Black one with black NextGen seats (while I liked the white car with the grey wheels, it had a tan interior and that was never my favourite) and autopilot, air suspension, 21" grey turbine wheels (that weigh 35-37 lbs each…boat anchors. Might grab some forged Arachnids) etc. Really cool car. I’ll do some acceleration testing when the weather improves. I already did a quick rip from 0-60 mph (96.6 kmh = 60 mph) in about the worst conditions possible and it was pretty quick at about 3.5 seconds. Just insane mode, half battery, cold battery, freezing cold tires and it took off pretty hard. Full battery is much quicker, as is warm battery. Will be fun testing this car over time.
