I’ve know Ali now for what, at least a year if not a bit longer…and have followed his journey the whole time. I think I’ve been asking him to share his story here for at least six months

All kidding aside, glad to have you here as I’m sure there will be lots of questions from other members about your current setup and the new one! He has contacts in Germany which are going to make the build far easier than it would be otherwise. Bolting the engine in is the easy part. Getting everything to work with one and other is the hard. But I know he’ll pull it off.

I know Doug from MRC in the U.K done a 4.0T swap from a RS6 C7 to a RS4 B8

So some potentially good news. I know Pete’s working hard on seeing if the S6/RS6 clutch plate will retrofit but I may actually have a source for a stronger custom machined piece. Due to the pandemic, it’ll go slowly for the moment but I have pretty high hopes and had to share. Best part is they’re just up the road from me. That’s all I can say for now until I get the details worked out but it would be a bolt-on high strength clutch plate able to withstand the rigors of a supercharged (or turbocharged) setup.

Sounds promising Michel would be great if these both worked out then there are options for everyone, good work can’t wait to hear more :+1:

It gets even better…Turns out the company’s owner is an old client of mine back when I owned/operated a company called Velocity Images. I used to do a ton of motorsports photography for teams, industry and individuals. He actually remembered my name! Good omen. Once the Covid-19 thing settles down, I’ll be paying him a visit as they do waaaaay cool wicked (technical term) stuff there for all kinds of exotics including new internal gear sets. Going to work on the clutch plate and clutch pack options with them.

That’s a result what’s the odds of that ! Sounds like you have your foot in the door already then nice one :+1: will be great if they can sort something out as you say if they can do waaaay cool wicked stuff maybe they can do other things for are machines haha love it !!

Turns out he’s an old friend from my RX7 rotary days! So a new clutch plate and more aggressive clutch pack will not be a problem. He’s already developed some for exotics including the R8/Hurican that are now being sold by other companies. Just need to let the Covid-19 dust settle and then it’s all hands on deck.

Just a heads up. You need to be really careful getting a more aggressive clutch as the DSG unit can become really really jerky and not enjoyable to drive. Too aggressive of a clutch bite will seriously ruin the usability of the car for everyday driving.

I would strongly suggest you consider keeping with the closest clutches to stock. If you don’t think that is a good idea. Go for a ride in a GTR with upgraded clutches. You will hate life and never want to drive in that car again. Same thing with the S Tronic R8s. Once they upgrade the clutches in the R8 with the S tronic it’s just a matter of months before the owners sell the cars because they become undriveable

Well, look at that! Something positive did come out of Covid 19!

There are two ways you can go. More “aggressive” material or more discs. More discs can lead to overheating and warped plates. There were issues with one company most of us know about early on with results as you describe but they’ve come a long ways since and a lot of the new plates are more about heat management and being able to withstand higher temps without slipping. Break-in is critical as is running adaptation a few times at various mileage intervals. But the new kevlar-based stuff is quite good and there may be options with Exedy plates. These guys currently make components for a certain clutch company in Russia.

We’re not talking a huge increase here but enough so that the pressure inside the mech doesn’t have to be ramped way up to handle more torque and hp. That can cause rather severe shifting issues which I’ve experienced first-hand. The R8/Hurican guys are often running hp #s in the six figures along with a billet clutch basket. We’re not going anywhere near that level of aggressiveness. I’ve really not heard of any complaints on the R8 forum regarding more aggressive clutch setups. I’ll ask around.

Yes sure, once the swap is done I will post the whole story all together :slightly_smiling_face:
Wish me luck

Spoke to Frank Dau at http://www.dau-zerspanung.de and he mentioned he had one available going for 1500 Euros plus freight. Attached are the comparison of their Billet flex plate to the factory RS5 plate.

Wow, that’s amazingly expensive. $1699USD plus I’m assuming about $200 to ship to the states. $2474 Australian dollars! If the S6 flywheel ends up working, that’s an amazing amount of savings.

If it doesn’t work, I’ll get my guy here to produce something. Pretty sure we can beat that price.

I was thinking the same thing when I read that price tag lol.

Any news on the RS7 flex plate fitting ? Also could you weld round the outer edge to strengthen the RS5 flex plate like Michel suggested in an earlier post or would this effect the balance of the flex plate ?

The welding is a no go, it’ll actually weaken the surrounding metal.

Oh i see that’s no good then i was hoping to maybe do this for now until we know for sure the RS7/6 fits or not or until you come up with something with the guy you know and are dealing with. Thanks Michel !

I’m chasing a gearbox issue at the mo. I think the clutches are slipping or the PES SC tune isn’t torquing ( excuse the pun ) to the DL501 properly. Essentially the car, at full throttle, is sliding from first to second rather than a quick change. When I first got the car I felt it was doing the same but after SCing the car it hasn’t iproved its 0-100 times so there is something wrong. Once that is sorted the RS6 STronic 2016 flexplate, jhm lightned flywheel and possibly clutches will go in. Awaiting a 4WD dyno to be installed locally and its the first car off the rank…
