Yes, the side of the exhaust is sagging in the video, we changed the hanger design to keep it centered and added additional bracing. Final version is as close to perfect we can get, we are quite happy with it.
Anyways, we have our final version finished and the fabricator is working on making the CNC bent pieces. Once we have a final quote and lead times we will post some photos and additional information.
Also is a quick video of our Porsche 996 Turbo exhaust
Sounds really good ben! I ned to get sound clips of mine so that people can differentiate them. Yours has changed significantly in tone since I was down there, its definitely smoother and deeper. I like it!
you guys should do a video side by side…same camera, same angles/proximity, same conditions, same environment. That way it’s easy to pick any differences without a bunch of variables.
Go to the strip, do some pulls, do some side by side videos, then see what you guys can run. Lots of homework for you!
If I can find somebody to do that with, I am more than happy to do so. Keep in mind the JHM will sound different anyways because they have resonators and ours doesn’t. Unfortunate for us when Mick and I did dynos his GoPro got left on photo mode so it didn’t record any video
Comparing the sounds is a little irrelevant in my opinion. My reasoning is this, unlike power, sound of an exhaust isn’t really a measurable thing. If one exhaust makes a lot of power, that is good, until you see a different one makes more, that effects your decisions. With sound however, if one sounds good and the other sounds good, you don’t use that to decide, you look at other qualities and go from there. I feel that there are so many videos of exhaust filmed with every kind of camera that, like you say, it is impossible to get a true comparison between them.
Anyways, next time I get it back and can put the car on the lift I will take some photos of the exhaust from under the car. Mick and I got plenty of good photos of the two exhausts next to each other which you can clearly see the differences between them. I may wait on posting those photos until later.
au contraire re the sound. If people buy Capristo catbacks on your forum, you know that sound matters. Capristo is a $5000 sound experiment, and nothing else.
I believe they all have resonators, not exactly sure though.
True about the Capristo (except it is $3800), but an exhaust like that is designed for sound only, not performance. On a performance exhaust you would decide based on gains (assuming sound is good, fit is good, and quality is good).
No. I have resonators. Dan does not. I specifically wanted them because I don’t need to overly annoy my neighborhood. In the tests we did with the sound meter, I was 1-2 dB less than Ben at 3k rpm.
I am not sure on whether I will do resonators on the new setup. I do ant to minimize noise, while retaining power.
Are you sure his is resonated? I remember when i purchased mine we talked a bunch about this being an option. I was pretty sure he was non res. But maybe I am wrong, anyways its optional.
We have considered adding resonators, but at the end of the day, the exhaust isn’t really that loud without resonators, nor does it have any rasp (now that is it broken in). When it was new it might as well have been a BMW, so much rasp. It took about 2 weeks to fully break in and lose the rasp. We would need to see if they fit, the JHM has much more room between the diff and driveshaft support. Ours is much higher up in that area so we might not have the extra room for a resonator, I will check when we get it back on the car.
We have one complete system which has been changed several times. We have fully developed and tested the exhaust to the point where we are satisfied with it. We will make as many as people want to buy, supply and demand.
So you don’t have your supplies pre-bought or anything…you’re just going to make them on an ad-hoc basis? Makes sense I guess…such a small market. JHM is a fairly large company (in 4.2 land) and didn’t appear to sell more than a dozen or so exhausts in the few months they were in production.
I’m not going to get into business aspects of things, but we do have all of our suppliers and several of the parts are custom, not just off the shelf pieces.
Mick’s exhaust is louder than I would ever want on my car. Sounds great at a track, but in neighborhoods and backing out of the garage it is too much, in my opinion. I can’t imagine what no resonators might do to that system.
With that said, Ben’s does sound nice. What I’ve found though, is that while you can kind of get a sense for the tone of an exhaust on a video, you can’t really understand the true volume of it without experiencing it in person.
My wife talks about how my car (Piggies, ECS H pipe) kind of rattles the house when I pull into the garage…I can only imagine what Mick’s sounds like in that case. I know it is loud as shit just when he pulls in the driveway!
