Pikes Peak MKV Jetta Build

Thought I would throw up a thread here about the car we are building for the 92nd Pikes Peak Hill-climb amongst other things.

Car has gone through a few iterations including a stupid flirtation with an air setup back in the day and most recently it has been sitting in my warehouse gathering dust on jackstands until Shift came and asked me to use the car for this project. Naturally I couldn’t say no!

Motor as is sits with a built bottom end, GT3071R, RS4 injectors and rail valve, APR HP pump, 3 inch MAF and an LSD in the DSG tranny. Porsche brakes, H&R ultra lows and DPE wheels.

So far we have fully stripped the interior, side glass, door guts etc and have taken the car from ~3200 lbs down to just over 2600 lbs. We will be adding weight by of course putting in a full cage and AWD from a 2010 A3 ensuring that we got the Gen4 haldex setup. We will also be retaining a DSG setup and will be putting in diffs and internals.

Full motor build including head, rods, pistons etc will be done. We will be potentially building a second motor as well of the 5 cylinder (non-DI) variety but that is yet to be determined as we have a few irons in the fire for both motor types.

We are hoping to pull at least 600awhp from the 2.0TFSI and potentially more!

A few shots of the in progress cage build being done. The lions share of the work is being done outside of shop hours so it is progressing a bit slow. This portion of the build should be wrapped up very soon so we can progress onto bolting in the Haldex setup along with installing a new diff in the DSG and naturally the engine build.

A little work done last night on creating the lexan replacements for the glass windows! Side and rear glass all were done. Windshield will be going back in once paint is done on the cage.

We are very happy to have Borg Warner on board to provide our turbo charger solution for our campaign to Pikes Peak and other racing events!

As we all know Borg Warner makes the K03 and K04 series turbos that are found in OEM and OEM+ applications on the 2.0T motors but naturally Borg Warners turbo applications don’t stop there.

We will be using two turbochargers depending on the event.

For Pikes Peak we will be using a turbo from Borg Warner’s Airwerks line of turbo’s.

Did you the vehicle weight before you started race preparation? It would be very interesting to have actual before and after weight if available. Very interested in your motor build as well. I love motor porn.

We did weight it before and I think it came in at around 3300lbs (i can’t remember the exact number).

Motor build and AWD conversion is the part that is exciting me. I am giddy about taking the car to the strip to see how it performs ;D

Things on the list to potentially be done are an o6a filter conversion along with a balance shaft delete and a laundry list of other things to make more power reliably. Also deleting the AC (it doesn’t work anyway) is on the list.

We are also looking to source a v-band turbo manifold, so we are open to suggestions on that front!

Sweet build - thanks for sharing! Great to see you’re going OEM+ with BW sponsorship. I’m sick and tired of seeing builds using hacked up, knock off turbos.

I see you’ll be using DSG with an LSD - are there any other examples of DSG+LSD elsewhere? What do you think that tw limits of that setup will be? theKB - you’re in BC IIRC? So are you working with HPA with the trans/LSD combo?

The team worked with BW last year with the FRS so it was only natural to continue the partnership, also considering BW owns Haldex and makes the transmissions there is a big knowledge base to draw on. They are a great company to work with!

We are from BC, but we are not working with HPA on this project.

Will be making a formal graphic but wavetrac is sending us a differential as I type this. The car does currently have an LSD in its FWD setup and that was by far one of the best upgrades that could have been made. We are also working on getting upgraded clutches and cooling as well for the transmission and we are just finalizing those details. I honestly haven’t seen much about people doing the LSD on a 4motion car, I know you could order one for the rear on the early haldex setups but we have a Gen4 so it’s not necessary and also there isn’t one available.

We are hoping to hit at least 600AWHP and close to that for torque for this season and then push the car further next season by swapping in a 2.5.
