Place your bets...

I think you guys are getting what you wanted. If someone like Dinan sold this kit, it would be $21,000 plus install. Instead you’re getting the parts and none of the markup. There’s risk involved. I wouldn’t risk it any more than I already am. Consider this:

What if Magnuson makes a production change to the supercharger and forgets to tell APR, like substituting an alloy which spins faster. When customer cars start breaking, they have to file a bug report for APR, who has to reproduce it, and then distribute the fix to people 80% of whom won’t get it updated. It sort of makes sense to do an engineering effort all at one company, to have this kind of communication.

Maybe that risk is small, but it is a risk. At $11k it’s a bargain and a risk. At $21k it’s not a bargain and no risk. That’s APR vs. Dinan.

Lol… Typical stupidity… Neither APR nor Magnuson makes the blower, eaton does… Go buy a bmw or tesla already and leave us low life Audi guys alone…

so they made a hail mary pass and still only trapped 121.5? that’s pretty weak.

  1. DA sucked but do we know what impact the DA really has when you’re running C16 or MS109? It’s not a naturally aspirated car on 91 octane where it’s a pretty linear performance killer

  2. it’s a pulley that doesn’t even come with the kit? That’s somewhat irrelevant then, isn’t it.

  3. no fucking seats? Again? As I mentioned, they have a history of ricing it up when their results aren’t very good, and this pass seems to just exemplify that. THey did this on the B7 RS4 1320 kit to scrap into the 11s. They did this on the RS4 1740 kit to try to beat JHM’s time. Now they’ve done it here.

  4. no exhaust? Yeah, primetime always runs open dumps when he hits the strip. So does jones. So does auditude. Oh wait, absolutely nobody on earth does that other than honda ricers? OK, so why do we give a fuck about a time APR ran when doing that?

  5. drag slicks again too? I haven’t looked, but with a 1.54 60’ I would say probably ssomething going on.

Put the exhaust back on and it’s going to be restrictive to a degree. Is that a tenth? Maybe. I’ve seen cars pick up 2 tenths by running open headers. That’s 50 lbs of weight, and the restriction elimination may be worth an MPH as well.

Put the seats back in just because it’s embarrassing taking them out. That’s 50-75 lbs (depending how far they went) maybe half a tenth to a full tenth.

Put the normal pulley back on and you’re looking at probably 20-25 WHP less…aka another 2 tenths and now you’re losing 2 MPH.

if the tires were indeed slick tires, there’s another tenth in itself.

So now where are we…about 3-4 tenths slower and 2-3 MPH slower. The MPH is the key since you can’t fool MPH with bullshit rice moves like removing parts from your car. It trapped 121 MPH with a pulley that isn’t even sold with the it. Is that pulley worth 2 tenths? 2 mph? Who knows but it’s not worth nothing…otherwise they wouldn’t have done it.

So then we have an MPH of probably 118-119 flat and an ET of around 11.5-11.6. I can pretty much say that’s what they would have run without pulling all the parts off, with running street tires, and runnign a pulley they actually sell. You can see why they got desperate.

The DA is definitely a factor, but we’re not talking huge. Don’t forget a stock blower car (jones) went 121 in 1500 feet of DA. They’re at a 6% disadvantage power wise…aka 30 whp, 3 mph and 3 tenths if you believe their fanciful marketing that they’re pushing 500 whp.

Where does that put us?

11.2-11.3 @ 121-122…right where they ran. The bullshit they pulled offsets the DA delta vs. jones.

Jones went 11.53 @ 121.

Jones’ mod if speculation is accurate was a few hundred bucks, and the stage 3 kit was $10,000…to go 2 tenths and 2 mph faster?

Anyone still impressed ?

Going no CARB certification is hard in California. I saw a guy have to remove all evidence of a supercharger kit on an R8 V10. When the car is 6 years old you have to pass that test every 2 years. So in 2 years, you have to remove the blower, get tested, and put it back on. It’s do-able, it’s just a hassle you have to consider.

Agree with this, I’d shave down the apr logo so it looks somewhat stock, but CA hates silicone hoses for intakes also.

sak - when you put it like THAT . . .

color me unimpressed.

I am thinking still the injectors must be close to the limit. I wonder if those 121 mph runs are limited up top due to fuel, and limited fuel for cooling as well. I really can’t see how they can inject any longer that a little over stage II, which was getting at 7ms injection time. Basically that takes them from intake opening to TDC.

It’s a shame because they should have done a simple pump gas run, and a race gas run, full interior and exhaust and street tires. I’m really willing to bet the pump runs would be stellar, if the blower really is that efficient and isn’t adding a lot of heat at the current PR.

I’m predicting much better stage III results in the hands of Primetime and others here, and I’d love to see the stage II vs Stage III play out further. I’m still curious how reliably the 1320 blower can make an 11.5 second car, with the right parts

nope never really was, because we all know that if it made real power increases it would have been out a year ago strictly through APR. Correct me if I’m wrong but at the end of the day it is still a 3 liter engine which is very small compared to bigger number supercharged cars, so you can’t really expect 600hp with a reasonable amount of boost that won’t explode the engine

Don’t worry, SRM’s twin charger setup should be out any day and will destroy all the records! =)

the only that would set would the world’s fastest audi engine failure

You’re on a roll today

I think 2 things are very strange

  1. they’re launching it…and literally the same day, they’re posting video and results for a kit that is not even being sold. But they’re posting no video or results for the actual kit. The ‘record’ is with a smaller pulley and tune that is not even part of the stage 3 kit. You don’t think the real kit results were completely dogshit, so they didn’t share them do you? Or worse…they’re hoping a few people will be too stupid to realise the video and promotion are for a kit they aren’t even buying lol

  2. they ran these ‘record’ times for the kit that is not being sold, in completely shit DA. Wonder why? Better DA was available over the past 3 years, and APR has run their car a few times in great DA. Why not share those times? Maybe the better DA = more boost = more heat = negligible gains.

Both of these things are REALLY shady. Someone is selling a kit (Magnusson? APR?) and here’s what we know about it

a. they gave some made up dyno numbers and even worse made up crank numbers
b. they have not shared any 1/4 mile acceleration information for the actual kit that is for sale
c. they haven’t shared any pump gas acceleration information for the actual kit that is for sale or the one that doesn’t exist yet

What this says to me is that, quite simply, the kit was a fucking disaster. The performance was shit, the gains were negigible, and the car can’t do anything on pump gas. unfortunately everyone drives their car on pump gas. Other than primetime. How many people bought an APR tune with race gas mode and stock mode? Nobody. Why? because they spend 99.99% of their miles on pump gas. So nobody is buying a tune for their car that they can’t use other than when they fill up with race fuel. So why are they selling the supercharger with only race gas information? APR has always shown pump gas information and supplemented it with race results. The answer is simple: Jspazz mentioned this too a couple of years ago…that the blower would not add much at all, but would be even less impressive on pump and would need race gas to extract any delta. As we’ve seen, the delta is pretty small for the money/work on race gas…and the pump gas information is being hidden. everytime Arin is asked, he straight ignores the questions (while answering the others).

They did. The results must have been crap, otherwise, why were they buried? Don’t forget APR has taken this car to the strip numerous times, including when they took the RS4 to the strip in great DA to post their RS4 runs 2 years ago. Why bury it? because it sucked.

True…then it’s possible the blower just isn’t as efficient as claimed…and they simply don’t need the fuel because they just straight up don’t have the airflow yet.

Hopefully Richi and tsivas hooked up and we can get some logs

Not yet. I am available whenever he is ready.

Got the green light yesterday from Magnuson that they’re willing to sell me a kit… lol No DIY though… Don’t have an ETA for it arriving at HS tuning yet but hoping for mid/late next week install… Will hit the strip the Wed. or Sat. it’s installed, of course I’ll get vids and logs… Hopefully, we’ll see some strip results before then but not counting on it…

Why would they not sell you a kit lol this is the best stg 3 news I’ve seen for years. Looking forward to results and logs!

APR had to go to bat for me to even make it happen, which I appreciate… I’d rather not go into a ton of it until the blower is in my/HS possession but I thought I was going to have to wait until the full launch at which point I may have waited until next year or not done it at all… I’ll do my own thread and cover everything in the thread… Good news is APR had a 2010 DSG car so I think all the remaining issues with shifting up top will be resolved…

Good stuff, prime. Looking forward to seeing the first actual time slip with the new blower.

New thread is a good idea.

Awesome!

Great to know that you’re going to get one, Ron!
