I’m sure some of you have tried a few options out there. My stock filters are in need of replacement and I’m curious if any of you have compared OEM vs K&N vs MSDS? If so, which have you found to perform the best in the stock (albeit restrictive) air box?
I had msds filters and enjoyed them. Folks say they are a little overpriced but I actually liked the quality of them. When I called them to ask questions the owner actually picked up and was really cool as well. With that said k&n is much cheaper…
Much cheaper and I don’t mean quality wise.
Your looking at over a 100$ difference.
For now I’d say stick with K&N

Thanks, guys! Looks like through AutoZone I can get 20% off my entire order and $20 back via mail in rebate for a K&N filter set. That’s $68 #WINNING.
OMG at that point it would be silly to not get them. Is there some coupon code. I need a new filter I would love to get that big of a discount
Coupon code HOLIDAY20 - Good for 20% off $100 or more. There is a separate mail in order form for the rebate to K&N - $10 back per filter. Not bad!
am I missing something? Oem filters are $28 ea. So you can buy the 2 required for the car for the same price as the 1 k&n filter. Also are our cars different but I was always under the assumption our mafs don’t like oiled filters.
The k&n filters do well if you dont add any oil or over oil them. They do flow better then stock. If you plan on getting more into performance the k&n filters are a good thing to add.
What worked well for the 5.2s little brother was K&n jhm spacers JHM tune and a good exhaust
I have K&N filters that are un-oiled in my car.
The biggest benefit to them is the rigidity IMO; my stock filters were pretty distorted when they were removed as they are so flimsy.
It would be interestig to see the difference in rigidity between the two. K&N has great parts but they try to sometimes use one filter on too many different cars. On the S4 the k&n works great but it dosent fit so well
Short update for you guys. Swapped in the K&N filters and finally realized how little space there is in the air box assembly. You can really see how much they handicapped this car so it wasn’t on par power-wise with the S8. A proper custom fabricated intake housing with ample breathing room (w/proper heat shielding/flashing), I’m assuming would yield some pretty big gains.
The difference between my somewhat crushed, pretty dirty and otherwise in need of replacement OEM filters is pretty remarkable. Throttle response is much better, car pulls much harder in every gear… night and day difference from what I can tell. Immediately heard the difference as well in the intake/induction sound in the cabin… more grunt. All around sounds much healthier.
I’d highly recommend this update for anyone on the fence, especially with the holiday deals out there.
If I attempt to make a custom fab intake system this winter (a friend has CNC access) I’ll be sure to post up the work/impressions.
Yes a custom intake will do pretty well but space is pretty tight. Need to place the filters where they can get a cooler charge. Glad you enjoy the k&n filters!
Here is the thing. You have to be careful with intakes. The S6 is using an air box that is under pressure. I know the air box is small but that has a ram air. The small air box gets under pressure and creates a high pressure zone. This is what you want if your looking to have a ram air. Open intakes dont work due to that. If you try an open intake you would need to put it down low where the SAI system is. You would want to get forced air to it.
i must take out my k&n filters and inspect them, seems like they were cleaned and re-oiled about 4k ago by previous owner. Can you clean the MAF sensors with normal electrical contact cleaner, just incase there is any oil transfer on the sensors form possible over oiling.
Unless you have a code for error on the MAF I wouldnt mess with trying to clean it. You really have to over oil the filter to get some pulled past the filter material and get on the MAF.
If your worried about it you can use electronic contact cleaner but I dont know too many people who had good luck with that. I would be careful
Just checking MAFs as I might want to replace mine (still getting lots of random misfires and lean limit exceeded)

Thought I would offer here - can do any AR member a Bosch MAFS for $150 AUD + ship. That’s Bosch number 0280218143 if you want to look around.
Cheers

paul check to see if you have a vac leak. That will cause lean codes and misfires. The oil seperator is another good place to look.
150 sounds like a good deal. Is the for each or both. I dont really know what the dealer charge is for the v10 but I know they are expensive for the V8
Yeah, I have to go over all of it again. As you know, I’ve had the manifold off. Only misfires at idle which suggests leak under high vac.
ECS tuning would like 231 of your American dollars for the OEM MAF (each), and they don’t seem to offer the Bosch version. So I hope $105 USD (each) is a good price! I hope you don’t think I am spamming my wares here - whenever I offer a price, that’s my discounted buy price (my cost!). Just trying to help out our S6 family :grouphug:
That said, you can also have my cost prices, mate!

Good for you paul. That is very helpful if anyone needs it.
Is there any noticeable difference between the k&n and msds filters performance/noise wise?
