Revo DSG short shift

New to Audi and first post on AR looking for some guidance. I had my car tuned 2 1/2 weeks ago (Revo 1+ w/DSG) & took it tonight for a first redline run (in manual mode). I ran it through 1st, shifted at 7k, but in second it short shifted on its own @ 5800. Any other fellow Revo guys experience that? Maybe it’s a nuance of manual mode? I know there’s not much love for Revo tunes here so I’m hoping not to re-ignite any additional bashing ;).
2014 with no other mods

Thanks,

Happens on stock DSG b8 cars sometimes. Some think it’s when you spin the tires.

Happens to skywagon on his revo tune revo Dag tune b8.5 s4.

Normal. Looks like safety of some sort.

Not sure if GIAC deletes it.

The b8.5 cars short shift and the transmission is programed differently then the B8 cars. The b8.5 guys need a transmission DSG tune to extend the rpm shifting limit.

First - welcome to AR. Great to have more B8/B8.5 guys.

Second - the 1-2 short shift in manual is an issue for B8 (non-DSG tune) cars as well. Do a few WOT runs in Auto and see if it replicates. That may indicate whether it’s tune-related.

Justin he’s talking about the short shift not the lower rev limit. The b8/b8.5 will sometimes upshift at like 5800 Rpm even though you don’t want it to.

He also appears to have a b8 not a facelift

My 2010 apr stage II w/DSG (no tune on dsg)…from 1st gear WOT in “D”, “S” or Manual, has never prematurely upshifted. Mine is shifting at 7200 rpm’s like clock work.

My car is a Prestige without ADS and doesn’t have the sport diff.

OP, does your car have the sport differential??? I’m guessing it does!

ya I don’t think it was a universal issue. Happened to me a few times. IIRC, the issue really held back Fonzie’s track times a few years ago. Primetime probably has more insight than me.

Thanks for the input all- mine is a 2014 with sports diff and I did get the DSG tune at the same time as stage 1 w/pulley. Weather has been pretty bad since I got the tune so yesterday was my first chance for WOT run and see what it could do. Forcast isn’t great for the next couple days here so I might not try again until later this week. I did read on occasion the DSG tune has “not agreed” with some cars and I’m hoping thats not the case with mine- taking car to strip in March so I’m hoping to sort it out before then. Thanks again and I’ll report back results from my next attempt!

One issue I think you’ll have is there aren’t enough people running that DSG tune on a B8.5 to help you out. I’d recommend you create some logs with VCDS to document the problem. Revo has been pretty active on AZ, so if you make a thread there, I’m sure they’ll respond and attempt to get to the bottom of the issue.

If you go down this path, it would also be interesting to start logging the TCM (transmission control module) to see what kind of useful signals there are.

I’m no calibration engineer, but I bet making a DSG tune is a lot more complex then just saying “don’t shift until 7.2k RPM” in some look up table. They have to maintain certain factory safeguards to prevent over revving or other problem cases with the DSG. The more data they have probably the better.

My 2014 B 8.5 with the same REVO tune has the identical problem and intermittent LC problems as well. I’ve sent logs to REVO and been in contact with them as well. Call Jeff at REVO and advise him. Hopefully they are working on the issue?

I’m totally new to this type of vehicle so logging is something I’ll have to learn more about. I’m only about 20 minutes from Revo HQ (which is where I had the tune done) so I’m certain they’ll be happy to look at it for me if needed. I was just curious if any others have heard of or experienced the same thing before I email them.
Carl

I just emailed him and as I said I’m close, only about 12 miles from them so I can easily take the car there for them to evaluate- maybe that can help with your car as well? I’ll let you know what comes of it.

Ever launch it hard and spin the tires a bit? Because that’s when it happens.

Last month my car spent two days strapped down on their dyno. It’s highly modified and Robin, the dyno tuner, worked on it to get me a better ECU tune. They needed my DSG ID number to create a unique tune for it. The ECU and DSG tunes were first installed last Sept. in NC. Last week I did some logging. On a couple of launches my LC failed. I simply went to manual and the problem was solved. However, that is not how it is supposed to work. I went to the strip Feb. 7. Had numerous short shifts, some say due to wheel spin(?), and a couple of LC failures there too.

I too am running the REVO Stage 1+ and DSG tune as of several weeks ago on my 2015. I did notice my car do the exact same thing on at least one occasion. I wasn’t certain if I imagined or saw it wrong, lol. I will have to run the car through the gears again and see if can get it to do it again. Interesting.

I think Saki is correct. Wheel spin = short shift.

Hmm, when doing hard launches…I always turn off traction control…haven’t noticed any issues with premature shifts?! It’s nice an cold here in VA today…I’ll go spin some tires and see if it short shifts with traction control turned off! ;D

OP, do a search…there are others that have noted the B8’s with *Sport Diff, tuned or not are short shifting in manual mode @ WOT. However, maybe this has nothing to do with the sport diff! :-\

4CHENIT…cool user name!!! Does your car have the sport diff?

mine was 2nd to 3rd shift, 1-2 went right up to 7k - if it was spinning I’d have thought that more likely in lower gear but I’m no expert hence I’m seeking council here. For what it’s worth, TC was still on when it happened. I’m awaiting Revo’s reply but I’ll do some searches on the matter as you suggest in the meantime. I too am in VA and I hear you on the cold, we’re not used to the single digit temps below the Mason Dixon.

Thanks
