Revo DSG short shift

It’s my license plate as well - captures my circumstance and my constant appreciation for that perfectly . . . I do have the sport diff.

I’ll go spin some tires and see if it short shifts with traction control turned off! ;D

OP, do a search…there are others that have noted the B8’s with *Sport Diff, tuned or not are short shifting in manual mode @ WOT. However, maybe this has nothing to do with the sport diff! :-

mine was 2nd to 3rd shift, 1-2 went right up to 7k - if it was spinning I’d have thought that more likely in lower gear but I’m no expert hence I’m seeking council here. For what it’s worth, TC was still on when it happened. I’m awaiting Revo’s reply but I’ll do some searches on the matter as you suggest in the meantime. I too am in VA and I hear you on the cold, we’re not used to the single digit temps below the Mason Dixon.

Thanks

I should have clarified that as well. My short shifting occurs during the 2nd to 3rd.

OP and 4chen…turn off traction control…COMPLETELY. If you’re not sure, it’s a two stage process. Hitting the ESP button will turn part 1 off (ASR)…keeping holding the button down and after about 5 seconds…part 2 will turn off (ESP).
So far, both of you have sport diff! I’m getting ready to go out and will try to flog my way to a premature shift…sounds kinda nasty, huh! ;D

In a few hours, snow will be falling…should get lots of slippage with my Dunlop Maxx GT summer tires!!! :o

I believe you are reading your tach wrong. B8’s will not go to 7200 without a DSG tune, or manual transmission. Redline is 7000.

Also, traction on or off doesn’t matter. If the car detects enough slippage it will short shift 1-2, DSG tune or not. I have had this happen stock and with GIAC ECU/TCU tune.

However, because you don’t have sports diff, I do not know if that changes the 1-2 short shift issue. I know it doesn’t change redline.

LOL… I’ve got an APR stage 2 tune…so, yeah I’m sure it’s hitting 7200! Hopefully, my 10+ years in bmw club racing has at least taught me how to read my tach properly!!!
As for traction control and my car prematurely shifting…it doesn’t! Just confirmed! Again, I don’t have sport diff! That seems to be THE issue?!

My car is also apr stage 2, no sports diff. I haven’t seen it short shit even with loss of traction, but I generally modulate the throttle when it does start slipping so it doesnt short shift the 1-2 change.

Ringitout, our cars can’t do 7200 rpm without the dsg tune. At least in my logs in both sport and manual its shifting at 7k

mrmomo313, interesting…is it possible that my tach is off??? I bought this vehicle 4 months ago and previous owner never mentioned anything about a tune on the dsg. Did APR have anything for the B8 dsg back in 2012? Everything I’ve read is that APR doesn’t have a tune for the dsg!?
Hmm, I really need to get the vag-com cable! It’s definitely showing that it’s going past 7k rpm’s.

As for wheel spin and premature shifting…spot on with what I’m finding!!! Doesn’t matter, trans holds gear to *red line.

Yes, you should get one! I’m still learning how it works but its a great tool and a must have imo. Check out jran76’s thread on beginner logging, great to get you started.

Unfortunately APR does not have a dsg tune available for our cars yet, they claim that they are working on it. Not sure if you are on Facebook but here is a video they posted on their fan page:

You can see that it is shifting above 7k with the software, not sure why your car is doing the same. I haven’t seen mine do that except for back when it was really new and would occasionally get hung up bad on the 1-2 shift. I’d see it go slightly above 7k, like very slightly not to 7100 but it held it there for a brief moment and then shift into 2nd, a common issue from what I’ve gathered. I’ve noticed at the strip on my first pass it slightly hesitates on the 1-2 but once things get warmed up it behaves very well, I think the dsg tune should do a better job of sorting out that hang up

Thanks for the info concerning jran76’s info. I’ll take a look at FB link you’ve provided! So weird that my tach is showing shifts at more than 7k!!! I’m a bit weirded out now. :o

What’s more interesting is we have two cars now, without sports diff, that won’t short shift, I like that.

Need a bigger sample size to make any conclusions though, even people that have sports diff confirming THEY ARE short shifting.

Gents, correct me if I’m wrong. The only thing I know for certain is the 2014 B 8.5’s have a red line of about 6200 RPM. I think the 2015’s are the same. I’m uncertain about the 2013 B 8.5s. My point is if you have an older S4 they wind up to about 7000 RPM and no DSG tune is required?? Please clarify the year of your cars.

I had similar and more issues when i got the DSG tune when it was first released. I have since removed it and been refunded. my issues are in this thread

I guess what we’d need to determine if your hypothesis has merit is a B8.5 car without SD that doesn’t short shift- Sky and I both have 14’s and your 2 cars are B8’s, correct? I did get a reply from Jeff @ Revo and he indicated the program should shift the car earlier than 7k for 1-2 (to prevent hitting the limiter) but definitely 7k for all other shifts. Weather in VA is crap so I’ll retest and report results to Revo &
AR as soon as I can.

Regards,

I’m glad you heard from Jeff. I may ask for a re-flash on my DSG?

Why?

Exactly Jones!!! A search on Audizine should produce more documentation. Not sure about AudiWorld?

4CHENIT, I didn’t get that logic either??? I think he’s got the sport diff?!

Could this have anything to do with APR’s delay with a DSG tune?

Anyone notice that evidently APR has got something in test mode right now? Not sure if it’s just the B8’s? The changes with such tune…are awesome. Everything I don’t like about the DSG is being addressed!!!

We had a thread a while back on how much performance (via acceleration testing) would improve with a B8 DSG tune. We shld dig that up, as I believe there was some skepticism about it.

The B8.5 undoubtedly b e n e f i t s

Didnt we also discuss the 1-2 shortshifting thing as somewhat unavoidable in certain circumstances , irrespective of DSG tuning?

I am pretty sure it was related to wheelspin and violent launches.

A couple of guys said that when they did a mini burnout at the dragstrip right before they went (just launch it with wheelspin where guys do a burnout but not in the water) it helped their launch traction, eliminated wheelspin, and they had no 1-2 shortshifting on their actual run.

Maybe you missed it but Apr was testing it as well as a stage 3 kit for the b8, but they were basically insolvent and sold themselves to a private equity company. That company has revamped Apr as a distributor of Chinese made exhausts and old tunes. They’ve fired the majority of their key employees.

I wouldn’t hold hope for anything innovative from APR. Unless they can get it made in China, and unless they can steal a tune from competitor, they’re not doing it.
