RS4 Re/Build Thread

Time to start another build thread. Picked up an RS4 off copart a couple of months ago. It was a former AZ members car that experienced engine failure and the insurance company totaled it as a result. 2 Owner, Avus silver exterior, silver interior, 88k miles on the clock. First owner had it for over 80K miles of that. Overall great shape but will have to address a few things.

First thing was to remove the canibeat stickers off the windshield, Im not about that life.

Door and Mirror, must have occurred sometime at the auction. I should have brought it up to them before I left since it was not mentioned in the listing but Im not sure they would have done much. Oh well.

Rear bumper will also need a repaint since they must have moved it from the back at one point and the paint has cracked.

I knew the car had KW’s, but was a nice surprise to see the 034 UCAs as well as new lower control arms, new Hankook 275/30/19 tires and some JHM intake spacers, all of which was added in the last 5K miles or so.

didn’t you already start a thread about this?

the canibeat sticker removal is funny. I can’t imagine being someone who smokes weed, and drives around in a super lowered car and then puts that on the windshield. Cops are already gunning for you and the sticker just confirms it for them lol.

Nope, just one about the options of rebuilding a motor. This one will cover everything and will serve as the my build thread for the car once it is running and I continue to modify it.

Just don’t put a 2.7 in it.

and speaking of that, let’s get some videos or something of this STK you have. I want to see it run, go over 40mph and 5500rpm. Have you had any swap issues?

Looks to be in good shape. This was the one you’re looking for the motor to put in? Did you ever get the other motor? Did you get a chance to really look under the car?

Smart first modification. I’d remove that sticker before the car even moved. Only someone on drugs would put a sticker on their car letting others know they’re on drugs. Sakimano said it as well. Might as well roll down your windows and tell the cops there might be drugs in the car.

Back to the thread. What’s the next steps now in the build?

How bout a 3 liter? I have not had any swap related issues. Got rid of the 5K limit, but the flex pipe on my down pipe completely separated end to end. Sucks, between waiting for a new one to come in and now the car is sitting at the shop ‘hopefully’ getting a new one welded in ::slight_smile: but I have not gotten any updates so my guess is its just sitting there.

Yup this is the one. I do have it on jackstands, Ill get some pictures up later. Short answer is, I do not see anywhere that something made enough of an impact to leave a mark…

Compression tested it.

Cylinder 1- 150
Cylinder 2- 130
Cylinder 3- 148
Cylinder 4- 152
Cylinder 5- 145
Cylinder 6- 140
Cylinder 7- 140
Cylinder 8- 150

Next step is to do a little more digging on the engine. I have a few options for motors oversees. I would just like to at least get the heads off this to check for scored walls before I pull the trigger on a ‘new’ one.

Congrats on finally pulling the trigger! Silver interior, too - nice!

Interesting, Clint’s car never got over 5500 RPM either. Then he dumped the project.

People who swap in the 2.7T usually figure out sooner or later that it’s really not all its cracked up to be. There’s a reason a B5 is $2000 now.

I actually don’t mind the 2.7t power plant, but It doesn’t touch the BNS motor…as we’ve seen. No 2.7t or stroker will ever run times on pump like the BNS 4.2…and it’s stock.

Your car is already plagued with B5 issues, it’s parked more than it’s moving.

I agree. For a few thousand you can buy one, get it to stage 2, and run mid 13s… But anything outside of that you’re going to be dropping some big coin and dealing with a lot of reliability issues.

He got rid of the 5K issue, tapped into the speed sensors in the footwell and its gone. Has to do with the location of the speed sensor and the B6/B7 doesn’t send that info to the ecu.

Have faith.

Picked up one off ebay that was already avus silver and had the side markers shaved. And for less then $200 shipped ;D

Someone seems to have removed the coolant? tube on the bottom front of the engine.
So something definitely made contact with the oil pan. Caused the paint to flake.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m151/65vetteC6/DSC_0791_zpsdc204f94.jpg

This tube looks a little modified ??? Im guessing someone used something to pry off the oil pan and ended up using that pipe as leverage?

The area around this screw also looks like its been filed down some…

Ill post a picture from my phone to show how f***ed the oil pick up is.

Ouch at first it didn’t look so bad but it got worse with each picture. You’ve really opened up the can of worms now. Seems the deeper you dig the more that’s getting exposed.

What do you think… Insurance job?

Not really sure, Something could have definitely impacted the oil pan and damaged the oil pick up, but the extent of the damage on this plastic piece is just strange considering the oil pan doesn’t have much damage. As for the front coolant pipe, I think that was just the auctions way of draining the fluid the quickest. Not sure about that oil pipe that’s bent up though.

Next question, do I pull the engine with the trans or try to pulling just the engine (never tried it this way)?

the ones I’ve seen done removed the trans, then the engine (on a lift) by dropping it out the bottom, but I’m not sure that’s applicable here

kudos to you for taking this on…pretty impressive just getting that far (from my point of view/skillset!)

Easiest to pull them together IMO. It would be such a pain to line up the motor with the input shaft and I think you have a good change of screwing little annoying things up like breaking sensors or piping while maneuvering the motor into position. If you pull them together all you have to do is separate the tranny from the motor (easy) then on re install just bolt the tranny back up, slide everything back in and the only think you really have to “line up” are the engine mounts and crossmember.

The pulling the motor part isn’t to difficult once you have done it a few times IMO.

Yup this is usually how I do it. Will give me an opportunity to upgrade some shifter linkage as well I suppose.

Yea, I pulled mine while everything was still together. It’s a behemoth, but I’d have a hard time imagining doing it differently on this platform. I’m sure JHM has some awesome little shortcuts and tricks though that I would have loved to known when I pulled mine.

JHM probably just drops the motor, tranny and subframe on a lift and then separates it. Lift in the garage is the first thing going into our new house (that doesn’t exist yet)
