RS4 Re/Build Thread

Make sure your garage ceiling is tall enough. It’s really embarrasing when your car roof hits the ceiling and you still can’t stand up under your car.

I tend to think into things a lot more than that.

I’d say it makes more sense to pull both of them together. This way you can inspect things a little better with everything out of the car.

Sorry, Euro; I didn’t mean to impugn your intelligence.

I really mean to an obsessive extent. I’ll probably research 20 different lift, take measurements 10x, and draw diagrams of the whole garage setup, lol. There was no offense taken.

Definitely pull them together. Who knows what you will find. If it wasn’t going to be a full tear down and you were just doing a service of some type, I would say pull the motor alone.

If you have time, it would be a good thing to look over the timing system as you already know how bad the B6 S4 system is. It will help really show how different yet the same the systems are.

Some city’s will only let you go so high up. I just build a garage and I have my fingers crossed that I have enough room. I went as tall as city code would let me.

After they inspect, who knows?

Got the motor out last night, hopefully will get to work on it a bit tomorrow

Strong work taking this on. Glad to see an avus getting saved!

Wow - you aren’t wasting any time!

It was to nice not to save.

Yup I want to get into this motor so I have a better idea of what’s the next step.

So, just to follow up on the engine pull. It was a pain in the ass, this car is showing that its a northeast car, downpipe bolts wouldn’t budge , no amount of PB blaster would break them loose. Therefore I couldn’t get the trans brace off making everything take way longer then it should.

Some things to add to the list.
Front passenger axles rebuild
Engine snub or whatever it is called on the rs
Alternator/motor mount/starter plug got caught and pulled out of the pin.
Motor mounts
The plastic coolant flange at the back of the engine. I tried so hard to not break this damn thing but its in such a shitty place.

Hopefully someone else and or Jake can chime in but I have no clue how you would replace the starter on this car. I could not reach the top left motor mount bolt unless removing the header. It seems like I should be able to get the starter out with the mount in but I was not able to. Anyone have experience?

RS4 Headers, interesting set up IMO, just have to remove the top bolts (none on the bottom) and the header slides/tilts off.

Where I left it, couldnt get the crank pulley off, buying some washers tomorrow so I can get this on the engine stand.

so at this point, is the engine a lump, or is it saveable? i.e. was it starved of oil and did it seize, or did the guy just get flashing CEL and an oil pressure warning and then turn it off? Cars have lost their oil (especially RS4s due to the fraying oil lines when the spacers moves and lets the lines rub) and been fine.

If the internals are ok, is the oil pan work just impossible to do for a reasonable price? Or is it just not even doable (physically) at all?

Also have we had a look at the underside/inside of the valve covers yet? i.e. are they painted with that same crap that flakes off the B67, or did Audi figure this one out?

Next step is to get in on the engine stand and remove both the oil pans so I can get a look at the rods/bearings. Supposedly there was metal in the oil when it was first diagnosed and a engine knock. I think I will try to do a leak down as well before pulling the heads. If internally everything is ok, then I would just replace the oil pan and pump. But if it was knocking I am going to assume something else was up. Again this is all second hand information unfortunately and I didn’t try to run it as to prevent anymore damage. I know it ran though. I will check out the VC for you.

Contact prime motoring. I think they might know the car.

Lots of work. The good news is, pulling the pan should tell you much more about the motor.

The plastic flange breaks if you talk about it breaking, I think Audi wanted to bank on stock options on those things. East coast cars offer fun challenges, so fun you want to strangle someone for it.
Getting the starter off requires several extra steps that add to the fun factor.

Is that a 67 corvette?

I week go out on a limb and guess 65

Elite Motorsports did the work.

Can you elaborate on the extra steps for the starter. Maybe I just need a really short allen key, makes me want to put a stub and nut in place of that one bolt just in case.

And 65, Im getting the wheels are throwing you off

Interesting. We should start a thread how RS4s who go to Elite Motorsports get blown motors.

As far as I know all they did was perform a compression test (results were low in one cylinder as I found as well) after finding metal in the oil. That along with dropping the oil pan to check things out. I did not find any metal when I drained it this last time though. I would think there would still be some remnants but I am no expert. Insurance likely had no interest in paying for them to further tear into the engine.
