RS4 Re/Build Thread

Nice work/progress! Best of luck on the determination of the engine health too, hopefully it’s salvageable and not a paperweight.

Iirc, on the S4, you have to remove the motor mount and motor mount support in order to remove the starter. I’d imagine it’s the same on the RS4, but don’t recall exactly. Once the motor mount support is off though it should be relatively straight forward.

Correct, problem I ran into was getting to the top left bolt on the motor mount support. It was under the header with very little room to get at the bolt. ???

Little more work tonight, better shot of the underside.

I have come to the conclusion this is a replacement oil pan. Why? Well this tube and the oil pump definitely took some impact and there is no way this is the same oil pan.

Looks like the rewelded the flange to perform some checks on the engine, that would explain the grinding marks I questioned earlier.

Check out that girdle. Its impressive the extra work that was put into the BNS over the BHF.

And confirmed, rod 2 bearing is spun. :-

SO, from here where do I go? Pull the crank and send it and the rod off to the machine shop to check if its salvageable?

I still haven’t pulled the heads but I did see some slight scoring in multiple cylinders, not sure if its anything to be concerned about, maybe I should do a leak down test first? Calling Count Vohn

I don’t have anything to contribute but you are creating a goldmine of information. Thanks!

I’d strip it all down before sending anything off, best to know what you’re dealing with before spending more money

Did you inspect all the rest or was that one obviously bad and you could tell without removing too many parts?

Very cool project!

Thanks! Trying to get as many pictures as possible.

Yea I am definitely going to pull the heads and rear timing cover still as well. Hoping there are no bent valves.

With the bearing spun, you want wiggle the crank end of the rod back and forth, very noticeable play.

Thanks!

Guess its time for an update, took a chance on this car.

Had the car inspected ahead of time, engine looked good with no major visible damage. Well this thing must have driven under a truck or something. Slide right on top of the car and pushed down on everything, drop the trans, trans brace, subframe and a number of other items. I introduce engine number 2. Known damage, lower and upper oil pan, timing covers, valve covers and the part of the cam girdles (for lack of better words)

Currently soaking the rings in oil, I think I will be able to replace the upper and lower oils pans. Need to have the heads checked out though. Also interior of the car was black, so I think I might be swapping parts if my silver ones out. Got new mirrors off the car as well since the old one was damaged.

Good on you for taking this on. Great information thank you for sharing… keep em coming

Damn, kickass thread with so much info.

So cleaned out the cylinders a little bit, everything is turning over without any issue. No cylinder scoring of any sorts. Want to clean out the cylinders a little more and get the pistons cleaned. Im still on the fence of whether or not to pull the whole engine apart and clean everything since it was sitting and somewhat exposed to the elements.

You can see what I mean about it sitting and gunk forming around the oil pick up. You can also see where the upper oil pan was broken. I think the way the trans broken the bottom of the trans pushed down and away from the engine pulling (cracking) the oil pan.

Motor one oil pan for reference (I never removed the rear timing cover)

And this is pretty much where I got to with motor one ha

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m151/65vetteC6/DSC_0447_zpsbf55d26f.jpg

Good news is it doesn’t look like the lower timing gear there was touched at all. Going to remove all of that tuff and inspect it when I get to that point. Want to get this girdle off first and see how everything looks around the crank etc. Let me know if anyone is interested in any specifics in terms of pictures/ measurements etc.

I came in for the pictures, ended up reading the entire two pages; good work.

Could you clarify something for me:

Are you using motor 1 as the primary or motor 2?

If motor 2 is primary, I assume you’re swapping over parts from 1, yes?

Thanks.

Currently leaning toward Motor 2. Motor 1 has 88K miles and a spun bearing. Also looked to have a small amount of scouring. Motor 2 has 45K miles and damage to oil pan, timing cover, valve cover but past that it SHOULD be good. I will probably pull the pistons/rods out for a good clean and take parts from #1 to make it complete.

Very smart approach. Maybe do a leak down test on motor 2 just to see if there is anything hiding you might not be able to catch with your eye.

If you need some spare engine parts, contact your boy FlyingTomatoes.

His car has been down since H20 after it was seen belching smoke, and loaded onto a trailer. RSworx posted a photo of it on their facebook page with the engine out. They deleted it very quickly after that. Guess FlyingRottenApple doesn’t want the news to get out. His cover was 'oh…just had my 3rd gear synchro replaced. Sure thing. Apparently he has been stockpiling engines over the last few weeks, so he can probably help you out. He has bought at least a couple.

Is that 3 for 3 now blown motors on cars we know of, for the APR supercharger kit? Guess we know why there was a ‘patent’ dispute. More like a ‘oh shit’ dispute from the looks of it. Could be wrong of course…what do I know.

I’ve never met FT, H2oi is actually the first time Ive seen his car. Didn’t know RSworx posted a photo of his engine out? I saw they posted his trans out (well I was assuming it was his). Where are you getting all this information? There have been a total of 3 running motors for sale in the US for the past 6 months…they are all for sale still. Not that he couldn’t have went through Audi or right to Europe.

There are 3 other cars running the APR blower out there (at least). Excelerate Performance has one (Avus), Drive Autoworks installed one on another Black car and there is one on a white car out west I think. I remember seeing him post that he was getting a lot of blue smoke after the install of the charger.

You made a good point somewhere about the possibility of a patent issue. If they did contract out the design of the last charger I guess there could be some patent infringement there somewhere. Past that, I really question what would cause a patent problem. Its not like this is a huge high volume product that is drawing national attention in the car community. Just doesn’t seem like they are selling enough volume for someone to spend the time and money to go after them over a patent infringement. But then again maybe its another company that was not getting paid for their work and now they are getting pissed lol.

Yea I should have done that before pulling the heads probably. Suggestions on best way to clean out the cylinders with the pistons in? Just pour oil in and cycle the engine wiping up any dirty oil that is left at the top of the stroke?

How difficult of a job is disassembling the heads (valves etc) so that I can clean all that? Might just take them to RS Worx to do.

On another note, anyone know of good virtual pc software. My last laptop crapped out on me and I can no longer use the Bentley Manual on windows 8. I had oracle virtual pc trial but that has ended.

I made the patent point on AZ…lol and I believe that is very fishy, I think you feel the same.

Euroswagr is not Sakimano

It is too bad that he is in APRs pocket and will hide any issues. It’s really guys like him that hold back the platform if you really want to put thought into it.

But I thought rs4elitist was Sakimano?!? Lol Knew I saw it somewhere haha just didn’t remember who made the comment.
