So I just found your thread on AZ, along with the video’s, and I personally wouldn’t do this mod if I was you. Sounds very similar to the xpipe I put in my S4. The shifts sound like someone is hitting a thin gong…very raspy…not my cup of tea. You can hear it best at 0:44
I don’t think you did read it because if you did, you’d realise that a resonator and a crossover are completely different animals, and their locations are irrelevant. There are resonators at the very back of the car too (mufflers)…does that mean that would be a suitable location for an x-pipe? No. An x-pipe is employed to promote exhaust scavenging. By coincidence it wakes the sound up a little, but that’s supernumerary. It’s about exhaust scavenging and performance. You can’t just place one willy nilly, or where it’s convenient.
Basically your modification is an impatient one. You just want to do ‘something’. If that is the case, get them to cut out the resonator and put in straight pipe. Don’t waste your time jamming a boxy magnaflow x-pipe in a location that may or may not make you slower.
This is why people struggle with you…you ask questions, then do the opposite of what everyone says. It’s very strange.
Strange? What else is new? ;D Gents,it’s an $80. investment! If it doesn’t sound right I’ll have it welded back in. popping $4500 for a Capristo and then install too…now that is strange! Thanks for your patience, it will all work out, I guarantee it!
Everyone here to a man told you that the capristo is overpriced and underdesigned and you should stay miles away. So I’m not sure how that was even worth mentioning.
Would you recommend two straight pipes instead of an X pipe. After they remove the muffler I’ll check and see if it allows the gasses to come together from the two main pipes, like an X pipe.
The problem with most of these videos is the lack of information the poster supplies. Does the car have “Sport” exhaust? Are the valves open or closed? Which resonator/resonators are removed?
Yea I get that, and this is the ultimate YMMV mod (your mileage may vary since you probably won’t get that lol)…but again, that rasp sound during shifts is a property of the manaflow xpipe. It did the same thing on my 2013 S4. So your only hope is that your exhaust covers up that noise. But it has been shown to be possible on a RS5…that alone would keep me far away from this mod if I were in your shoes.
I get that you can replace the resonator, but then you’re just spending more money and doing more surgery to something that could go wrong down the road.
Here is what mine looked like after one winter (which is why I said to make sure you get it TIG welded)
I ended up selling it to mrmomo for $100 because it was taking up so much space in the garage once I switched to the nuespeed. Not sure what he ever did with it? I know I kind of dicked him over because he bought a new exhaust a week later and wanted to give that thing back lol I was moving at the time and really didn’t want that thing back lol
Took it to a “muffler shop” ;D since I didn’t want to drive an hour away and pay $250 for the job. Hindsight…lol…was definitely nicer then stock though, since I could actually hear the exhaust.
FWIW, I’m using a custom exhaust shop. Will, unfortunately, be doing Mig welding instead of Tig. Honestly I’m not sure I know the difference. Regardless, I’ll be there the entire time when they do the job. Whoever did your job was an idiot!
Sky, Sigh… You’re the best bud and honestly glad you still post and share on AR… I don’t agree with most of what you do but no one can deny your desire to improve stuff… I give you a ton of credit for that…
The vid sounds good… How does it sound in the car? Is that you talking in the vid? +karma
Try this link? I’ll also go to web site and adjust. Below is picture of what they removed. Shop got swamped and tech took car off rack before I could get pictures, damn-it! Tomorrow I’ll get a caliper on it and get some accurate measurements of the plumbing.
