Regarding your time I hear a good bit of tire squeal off the line so I’m sure it was eating up some of your time. Also, you may want to log your boost values and IAT’s as under those conditions you should be seeing over 15psi. Last thing, is your intake sitting properly? I know when I first installed the pulley the shop had to reinstall the factory air box with the plastic tubing connected to the grill. unfortunately, they didn’t get it lined up perfectly which restricted airflow under higher load limiting the amount of boost I was seeing.
No problem, Vogz! Hopefully you can make it next time. Maybe sometime in April - will definitely have my summers on when I head back.
Bear - thnx for your input. Much appreciated. Glad you noticed the tire screeching as well. Compare that to my best time of 12.45 - no tire spin at all:
Re the psi issue - that really has me puzzled. NWS4Guy noted that he is regularly seeing 17psi on his podi boost gauge. I have NEVER seen it go above 15. If I should be above 15, then something is up either with my tune or the boost gauge (e.g., perhaps not installed properly?). I do, however, believe my intake is situated properly. It did not fit correctly after I installed it, but my shop fixed that when they installed the pulley.
Ultimately, I think you’re right about logging the next time I hit the strip. May be the only way to determine whether the problem is my tune or boost gauge. I will definitely need an overview of how to log my passes, though, as I have no idea how to do that (but I do have a VAG-COM!).
I agree with bear on the tirespin…summer tires are always in season at the strip if it’s open, IMO. But also, I only saw 1.78 on my pump gas runs, so your 60’s weren’t in reality all that bad…none of it explains the pretty low traps. Yeah you gotta log.
If you notice clochner was able to cut 1.82 60’ times even with skinny winters.
Last time his car was pulling harder (he trapped 2 mph slower this time) and he had his much wider summer tires but despite that his best 60’ time then was 1.80. So the difference was 0.02 in other words nothing. His et is off by two tenths, not two hundredths so he lost time somewhere else, not the launch. If he had some winters that were the same size as his summers I reckon he would have had his best ever 60’ yesterday. That’s a win for winter compound launching.
Tracking down where the car lost two tenths and two mph would be interesting.
Clochner any changes since then? Conditions were better this time weren’t they?
Guys, Glad you got out and sounds like you had fun… IMO sitting in the lanes and moving slowly is the biggest problem for these cars at the strip… The oil temps and IAT’s go up quick… They do recover quickly once moving but it hurts the overall pass IMO… I have found optimal oil temp to be 190-210 and IAT’s do be 50-70c…
In the office so I can’t watch the vids but I’ll check them out at home… Curious to see how the tip performs and it’s shift points compared to the DSG…
Clochner, Yeah you neeed to log to see what is going on… I have had some swings of 2mph on my traps as well so don’t stress to much if the car seems to be running ok… If it were me I would ditch the APR intake and go with an open one like Roc-Euro or the new one from USP… You could sell the APR and buy one of the others and some header wrap and probably break even or make money…
Ken, Well I believe you do in fact have the fastest 3.0T A6… I wonder what the times would have been at the No Limit track? To bad Ryan didn’t join you guys would have been nice to see what his times would be again…
He absolutely lost time on the launch… you can hear it. I’m not saying he lost 0.2s off the 60’ but just because he was close to his previous best 60’ time doesn’t mean he didn’t lose time on it.
Clochner, you need to log every run, SUPER important! I know logs helped me realize two problems with my setup:
Intake issue reducing boost and about 1.5-2psi reduction
Coolant issue with the CPS unit causing my IAT’s to go through the roof and pull timing (don’t know yet how much of a factor this will be… will see this Sat)
Once you figure out what fields to log do 5 (or so) 3rd or 4th gear WOT pulls and send the file to one of the guru’s (J, PT, Tsivas) or if you’re really desperate send it to me (Totally not a guru) and I’ll compare it to my logs and report back.
After we see the logs we can help you diagnose the problem.
Not debating summer vs winter tires. All I’m saying is the amount of wheel spin I’m hearing in his video is adding to his 60’ time.
I’ve hear that “a little wheel spin is needed” before. Why is that? I’d think logically if you’re spending time spinning your wheels stationary vs spinning them moving forwarded you are wasting time… Or am I just missing something?
Edit: Clochner… I can’t tell but did you do a mini burnout before you staged your run? If not, that step will help get heat into the tires and removes stones and such improving traction.
you drive an auto 2010 right? So I am not sure what launching your car feels like as I’ve only driven launch control equipped 2011+ DSG cars and manual cars (in the B8)
Anyway, AWD can cause you to bog which destroys your momentum. Often you need to launch (in a manual car for example) with a hint of wheelspin to keep you away from quattro taking hold and making you bog.
When you launch say a manual B8 or my RS4 from lets say 2400 RPM, you drop the clutch, then quattro grabs, then you feel like someone hit the brakes, then you get back on track, and accelerate. Problem is you’ve just wasted 10 feet of track and are going super slow. By the time you hit the 60’ marker you’re finished first gear but it has taken 2.1 seconds. If you launched from 3400 RPM, you instead get a bit of wheelspin but the car keeps moving and then grabs and you’re beyond that bog speed. You just take off. My good 60’ times are in the 1.82-1.83 range. I am able to do that with a bit of wheelspin, while making probably 100 ft lbs of torque less than your car for example. If I launch from a much lower RPM with no spin, the car bogs, and I cut 1.95 or worse 60’ times.
A little less wheelspin might make me a little quicker, but a lot less and I am super slow.
Another example of this, Keith from APR launched the APR supercharged RS4 from around 5000 RPM. Loads of wheelspin, but it came out awesome. He cut 1.7 60’ times over and over.
Interesting… I’ve never experienced this bog on my B8 S4 before and I haven’t driven MT in 10+ years so I can’t remember if I’ve felt it before. I’m going to have to ride in someones MT next time to see what it feels like.
On stage II there’s little to no bog, full torque is pretty much available from 3000 or maybe less with the new GIAC even. When you give it the boot, DSG typically holds RPMs around 3000-ish by clutch slip, and engages the clutch fully once the speed catches up.
Just past the burnout box, I have no problems spinning all 4, even more so with 100 tune. Any wheelspin on the actual launch is not desired, though, not in this car. There is no torque advantage at higher RPMs, in this car. Sak I see what you are saying and it works for cars without low-end grunt, or those who have to build boost but can’t at the line, but it hurts this car more.
Any wheelspin also causes the early 1-2 shift and/or 1-2 hung shift.
Mostly though, there must be something weird with Clonch’s car…only logs will tell
Whoa - lots to respond to since last night. Jspazz, thnx for the link to the log guide. I’ll read up on it and perhaps do some logs on my own without even going to the track.
My 12.45 @ 112 was in November 2011. Only relevant changes since then are winter tires and V2 Stage II. I’m not sure if conditions were better this time - I recalculated the DA on dragtimes.com and came up with 103 for last Saturday. So not nearly as good of a DA as I noted in my original post.
OK so DA was probably much better last time. That makes more sense and can easily explain some of the MPH gap. I thought you went in summer last time but I guess I was thinking of your old stock runs?
Thnx, Prime. It was a lot of fun, as always. I will do some logs after reading through the guide that Jspazz poseted. I’m hesitant to give up on the APR intake. For one, it wasn’t cheap. And I also like the way my car sounds with it. Not just the (minor) increase in supercharger whine, but also the engine itself sounds a little meaner, if that makes sense. Obviously it looks great under the hood, but ya, that doesn’t help in achieving better times.
No mini burnouts before my passes. I was under the impression that burnouts were only for rear-wheel drive cars. Pretty sure Ynnekdude also didn’t do any burnouts.
