SIX6SIX - Intro Thread/Saga of S6 V10 Ownership

Just read back and somehow I missed that I already mentioned the death of the previous set of front dampers.

Back in the shop Saturday night. Apparently thermostats can fail within the first year after installation. Maybe I got a defective unit or maybe there was just too much heat due to my “spirited” driving. Was driving through the city and heard a sound that sounded like steam being pushed through a hole in a pipe. Then as I got to the first traffic light, it began overheating while sitting still. Thank goodness it was covered by a service warranty.

I had the same thing… overheating and the hissing sound. ended up being my rad at the side of the tanks letting go, could be the coolant reservoir as well.

Thanks for the insight. They replaced the thermostat today but are keeping it to test again in depth tomorrow to make sure the problem is resolved.

So, no major updates, but I had some purge valve on the front of the engine fail randomly. Car was running fine, then I got the P0456 code for small evap. leak, so I went back home and switched cars. Came back to try again that night to see if the code would return, but the engine idled so horribly and began misfiring. Couldn’t figure out why a P0456 code would cause so much headache when it never did before. Had car towed to shop. Ended up being the purge valve on the front of the engine. It was getting stuck open and not closing correctly so when the purge valve in the engine and ECU were pretty much struggling trying to adapt. One hour of labor (maybe less) and a new purge valve later, all was back to normal…

It’s a good thing we didn’t hear from you for awhile. Means all is well in paradise lol.

How have track days been?

Yeah, overall no complaints. Haven’t been doing any track days this year due to new family obligations. I may go to Summit Point in July for the HOD/GranTouringMotorsports event, but I’m on the fence about it at the moment. We’ll see.

No updates other than basic maintenance stuff.

Rear diff service was just done since I’m getting close to 100k miles.

Prayers and Appreciation go to the reliability gods.

Been debating on wheels lately, but today’s mishap of finding C7 20x8.5s for $450 has discouraged me… I’ll take it as a sign that I just need to be happy everything works and worry about the aesthetic stuff later. 19s are better for track, but I don’t think I’ll be hitting the track again until maybe November at the earliest. Time will tell.

Shout out to vtgt for saving me the headache of buying wheels that were too narrow.

Any time my friend! 255 is still a good tire size but I don’t love 20x8.5 especially if your in DC and tracking!

Car was running fine… I was in sport mode… Then I made a left turn, and the car went into limp mode…

Then I slowed down. And the car wouldn’t go back into gear. Red gear indicator lights. But the transmission didn’t stutter or hunt or any of the signs of the usual dead transmission. I keep a scanner in the back (like most vintage Audi custodians) annnnnd…

P2716 Pressure Control Solenoid

So I google it and it says that this has happened to others long ago in different cars. Dealership may say to replace the whole tranny some forums said. Others spoke of how they had the tranny flushed and didn’t have problems after. Others spoke of how the car was fine the next day when they started it back up. Had the car towed to the shop. Went back this morning to bring them the key and magically the car starts right up, no red gear indicators, goes into gear, and he drives it right into the shop. Odd. So he checked it and he said that the only thing there is the same code P2716. Great. Now what? He said I need to have it flushed because a simple drain and refill won’t make any difference. Said to have it done at the dealership to make sure I get the correct ATF. Okay, so I call the dealership and they don’t have any appointments until the 20th. And then when I call back to ask how much it’ll run, the other service rep says that they may not recommend their “transmission fluid replacement” because it may cause more harm than good. Sooo now I’m going to either drive it home or maybe drive it to Jimmy if he somehow has space or time to do it for me. We need to do a kickstarter or GoFundMe to get him a clone or stunt double to help with the demand lol

Let us know what they say. If you need a S6 transmission I know a guy that has one with about 90k on it in good condition.

Thanks. Hopefully I won’t need it lol. Shop said they recommend i get a flush/fill from the dealership. dealership has no openings till 20th. thankfully jimmybones has come to the rescue. I’m just waiting for the parts/fluids needed to show up tomorrow.

Good luck. let us know how it all goes.

Can you put me in touch with that seller. Any idea how much they’d accept? (Just in case I guess)

So, mechatronic unit in the transmission seems to be dead. Jimmy swapped ATF and no change, so now I’m working on figuring out how to get this other transmission (thanks to an angel seller that saved the day once again) shipped down to us here. Or I may drive up and get it if it will fit, and if it isn’t too heavy for transport in our car. If anyone has any suggestions on shipping a tranny from up north to us here in the DC area, please let me know. Hopefully we can get that figured out ASAP so I can stop being such a burden to the great JimmyBones.

He also found a leak behind the crank pulley, a super low fluid level in the steering fluid reservoir, and a cracked coolant tank so that has to get fixed as well. When it rains it pours I guess. Either way, 1st world problems so I can’t really complain. Just thankful that I’m in a position to even have issues like these in the first place. silver lining

Also shout out to VTGT for reminding me how the S6 has brought countless people into my life since ownership whom I otherwise may have never met. Nothing’s a coincidence.

Also had the low reservoir for the power steering… check the power steering cooling lines, the clamp on mine was loose near the rad and just put a new one on and leak is gone.

Had to replace my reservoir as well as it was the cracks that were the culprit in my mysterious coolant disappearance.

Good luck with the rest of the stuff.

Shipping a transmission is possioble just like shipping a motor.

Most of the time your going to need the trans in a crate of some sort and your going to want to use a fright company. I don’t know for sure the weight of the transmission but figure 300lbs just for safe measurement given you would have to have it in a crate.

The S6 transmission is long and very bulky. I don’t see it fitting in most cars. A wagon or truck no issue that will fit in there just fine. But most cars I’m going to say it wont fit.

Look on car-parts.com for the tranny they offer shipping also

Thanks for the insight from everyone. Transmission paid for. Shipping, I’m working on ironing out the details today so I can get a solid quote by COB this evening or Monday (assuming they won’t all be open over the weekend). I may end up using FedEx flat rate with our corporate account, but I guess we’ll see who comes out with the best pricing while warrantying their service (promising not to break it or to reimburse if they do).

Good to hear. let us know how all this turns out. It might be helpful to pull the transmission semi apart to see what went wrong. if you don’t find it outright
