SIX6SIX - Intro Thread/Saga of S6 V10 Ownership

So I’m back on the road as of last night thanks to the great JimmyBones and CV. Mechatronics unit was replaced with the unit from the other transmission. Then Jimmy had it taken to the dealership for the car to be coded with the new unit. Then he fixed the leak in the front of the motor behind the crank pulley, annnnd voila… here we are… main thing I think that’s different so far is tht gas mileage seems to have improved. I’ll know for sure over the next few days, but that makes sense since there is probably much less resistance within the transmission now.

P0480 - Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit

Car was running cold randomly once every day or 2. Shop suggested replacing the entire fan unit because the module in the S6 is built in. JimmyBones to the rescue again. He did the research and found that part# 8E0959501AG is a direct swap so I ordered the part from ECS. Now just patiently waiting for date/time for install.

To all the C6 S6 owners going through maintencae issues, I say:

Keep Hope Alive

Heck yes!

So, right fan replacement and a leak beneath oil cooler I think it was. I’ll ask Jimmy later for specifics so I can repost later. But the main thing is the carbon buildup that’s taken place over the last year of not driving on the race track…

So, JimmyBones to the rescue once again. He did the carbon clean, replaced the faulty fan motor, fixed a gasket in the engine that was previously leaking, and repaired a broken hood release cable. Then to top it off he cleaned up the engine bay a bit. Gotta love him.

Next up, I’m having the installation instructions reviewed for something which should prove to be the permanent solution for carbon buildup prevention in every engine.

Thinking Meth injection??? I’m leaning towards that this spring along with a proper catch can on the pcv.

Interestingly enough I’ve picked up a 07 Audi A6 Avant 3.2FSI with 265,000km on the clock and just going through the carbon cleaning process right now.

One note, it’s substantially much less carbon build up than my 5.2 V10 and it has a much much different PCV system that sits in the V of the block. So maybe there is something there that could help our engines out.

Carbon Build up (after 265,000km/164,000miles)

https://i.imgur.com/l5sN4xG.jpg

I sent a PCV solution to JimmyBones and CV for review. It’s been proven to work on a number of applications and they made a kit specifically for our cars. After Jimmy gives the okay regarding the installation procedure, etc, I’ll have one installed on my car. We also have another product that should help resolve any future carbon buildup issues, but I’ll come back with more information when we are ready to move forward. Maybe in a week or two.

Look forward to it.

There is a guy in Calgary that had a catch can system with a remote reservoir that held 1.5L, wasn’t a perfect solution but saved emptying the catch can all the time. Was even heated to deal with Canada’s frigid winters.

Just additional food for thought.

Definitely curious as to what you guys have in store SixSix!

What’s new in the saga of S6 ownership? A broken hood release handle and what sounded like a terrible grinding noise. Dont know what the grinding is yet but will find out soon. May be related to alternator since I dont have any error codes yet. When I started the car (2 days later) it had a low voltage warning. The only times that came up in the past were when I had a broken serpentine belt and when I failed alternator. Hopefully it’s only that this time as well. Time will tell. In the meantime, here are pictures of the hood release handle carnage.

Thanks for this info!

I have a faulty control module on the high speed fan that drains the battery down. Have the car parked and the fan unplugged…you have had no issues with the swap?

ECS just quoted $475 for that replacement part and the fan assembly at Audi is $1300 CDN…If I can swap the part then it would be a savings!

I didn’t think of the possibility of the fan module draining the battery. That may explain why my battery has been struggling so much over the last few weeks. I’ll ask Jimmy what he thinks. He replaced the fan motor again since the one I initially received was the culprit behind the grinding noise. I need to head down there today to get a battery installed by AAA, but hopefully this replacement fan motor they sent will work for years to come. Fingers crossed.

I purchased from ebay from seller “Carimpuls”

https://www.ebay.com/str/carimpuls

So I’m back on the road again thanks to JimmyBones. It took I think ummm, 4 used radiator fan motors to find one that works without making noise. Then after he was able to get the fan motor to work smoothly, the alternator failed (great timing). It was super loose inside and on the bolt that ties the wheel to the rotor inside (Not sure I’m describing that correctly). Thankfully it was in Jimmy’s hands at the time because he was able to use an S4 alternator with equal specs to replace the failed unit.

With that said, if any of you are on the east coast, I’d say to contact Jimmy for any needs you may have.

New oil leak. Shop said it was originally a small leak coming from bolts at rear of the block. They replaced bolts and then a couple days later, major oil leak. Dropped the car off this morning for extensive check so will find out tomorrow if there are any gaskets or tubes needed.

This picture was taken yesterday after maybe 5-10mins driving around my neighborhood.

God speed. We are saints for owning these cars.

Thanks. Much needed. Shop gave me the car back, but said that I’ll need to have camshaft bearing covers resealed. Unfortunately, it requires an engine drop to seal those covers lol. Not sure if they did anything to try to remedy it in the interim, but I asked this morning (2 days later) and the shop owner said to drive to drive smoothly for now. I wasn’t going to drive it at all, but I didn’t see too much leak over the last couple days (only did one short 10min drive to/from car wash). So this morning, I drove the car to work. I kicked it into sport mode right before I pulled into the garage to see if it’s worse when in Sport. Waiting till I leave to check under the car to see how much oil leaked since my longer (35mins or so) drive this morning. Either way, I’ll be taking the car to JimmyBones for the reseal eventually. I try not to bother him much more than I absolutely have to because he’s such a valued/appreciated resource.

Jimmy is good.

Dropping the motor allows you to really get to some of the little issues. Even pulling the cats out will help wake the car up a bit

Yeah I believe the plan is to gut cats and swap starter motor. Maybe also the steering rack, but hopefully that won’t be necessary. Main point is to have the loving hands of JimmyBones cover the bases because he’s literally the best person. Thanks goes out to vtgt for the intro long ago. And shout out to Jimmy for the intro to CV long ago. You’ve all really made Audi ownership more like a family adventure. I know my wife will be happy when it’s back in action. She hates my car so much but still loves me lol. Anyway, cheers to everyone. Godspeed to us all.

New starter motor showed up.
