Wow that is something you dont hear about very often a stuck T stat. Let us know if that is what the issue is. Add that to the list of things to know about on a used S6
The t-stat has an electronic actuator that can open or close it outside of the temperature range… I should have kept the old one for reference, but it was malfunctioning and there was a code for it in vagcom scans.
the updated one has a better actuator (from what the parts girl tells me)
it’s an easy replacement, and if you are changing your coolant, or experiencing overheating for no reason, then a replacement is in order.
I had a random over heating too—temp gauge would rise up to maybe 3/4 and then I’d turn off the AC to get it to come down. Also saw leaks below the engine.
A week later the hose to the thermostat blew off and I lost all my coolant. Replaced the thermostat and new coolant everything seems to be fine.
It is a heater element in the thermostat since the thermostat is map controlled by the ECU to be able to open earlier than usual (220*F) if the ECU wants it to.
What code were you getting? Probably cooling range and performance?
The shop seems to have resolved the overheating and misfiring issues. Coil pack, connector, and spark plug replacement on cyl 4 and thermostat replacement (per JimmyBones). Drove around 350 miles yesterday and no hiccups.

Yeah that’s the other thermostat. Apparently we have two. The one you’re mentioning is the one for transmission I think and it had failed on me maybe 8k miles ago. This one that recently failed is apparently for the engine. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in though lol
Wow what a great thread! Did you ever get the intake spacers back in? I did a carbon clean and installed in-take spacers but am now getting the error for intake flaps stuck open/closed. Also, motor is rough at idle, not throwing a code for misfire so maybe a vacuum leak like you had…

you have to remove the assembly line brakets.
This thread post will tell you everything you need to know just read down the thread you will see leaving the brakcts in will give you the code you mention

Yeah intake spacers went back in with the new/updated intake manifold some time ago. If the flaps in the intake are getting stuck they may be close to failure. But if no codes, then yeah probably a vacuum leak somewhere that you’ll probably find as it degrades over time.

Wow those look great. That is a neat addition to the car
Forgot to post these on here although a few of you follow me on IG.

…so I got my belts, tensioners, control arms, tie rod ends, etc all changed last week. I also got the JHM lightweight crank pulley installed. Felt like a completely different car. There was also a new resonance point found in the exhaust between 3-4krpm so I’m guessing that’s related to the light CP. Sounds meaner through the rev range and seems more happy to drop and jump revs between gears. That’s with only a few hours of driving though. Had a coolant hose or fitting or something fail as I was driving in a spirited manner lol. Smoke was pouring out of the hood lol. Glad it was coolant and not oil though so we’ll see what the diagnosis is Monday I guess.
Interesting note about the 3-4k resonance, mine was noticed after SAI delete, lw crank pulley, new tensioner. I actually thought it had something to do with the SAI delete. JHM lw pulley does seem to allow the motor to rev much quicker, and is much smoother from idle to redline.
Nice review guys. It is very helpful to get this feedback considering the 5.2 motors have such a small following its great to get feedback. I have to say I noticed something similar on my 4.2 with the LW crank pulley. IT really helps the motor feel more light on its feet.
…okay, Welp. Here’s the culprit. Some tiny plug on the passenger side of the block failed and sprayed coolant everywhere. It’ll take 2 days for the replacement part to show up.

Well that is odd. Can you give us the part number on that.
Welp, great track weekend was ahead, buuuut alternator belt failed… so now it’s back to the shop that installed it… Track weekend over after 1 and a half sessions lol… FML…
…still a 1st world problem so it’s all good. But still a little disappointing…
Welp, it’s been awhile since I updated, but had another gasket leak, so that’s being fixed under warranty (since the work was done in the last 10k miles). Also had a few random misfires here and there on cylinders 3, 5, 8, 10 so the shop is replacing the coil packs on those 4 cylinders as well. Pickup today I hope. We’ll see. Good wishes to you all.

Thanks for the update. Let us know how the misfires turn out. I looked over seveal pages of the thread but a quick question did you do the injectors? they seem to be the lion share of misfires for most.
