Teaser: APR 3.0 TFSI Stage III Supercharger System

This is exciting but this kind of post being made without APR look obvious. This is a great leap for the entire S4 market but it looks like someone was being a little selfish trying to get EC some traffic rather then sitting back and letting APR doing there thing. I cant see APR knowing about this like you said. I think while this great most people are going to not be too sold on much till APR makes and shows the data. I was under the impression that you were on the list to be on of the first guys to get this kit. Is that something your still going to be part of.

Delaying the product might have been as simple as them waiting for the market to get bigger. Now that the 3.0TFSI is confirmed for the B9 it’s safer to fully invest in the launch (and support) of the product. It doesn’t hurt that they’ve been selling tons of SQ5 also.

They also blew multiple rs4 motors in development and on customer cars and still released it while struggling to stay solvent so I don’t imagine that would matter.

If a race gas s4 is running 11.5-11.6@120 with all the toys and the 1320…and a pump gas car is running 11.9-12.0@115 or so, what will the 1740 do?

We know that the 4.2 cars on the 1320 easily ran 11.8-11.9 on pump (5 years ago) , and with some further development and more fleshed out modlist I wouldn’t be surprised to see an 11.6@120. When you upgrade the 4.2 cars to a 1740, and push them with good mods great da and good driving, they run 11.1-11.2 @ 125 at best. That’s in epic da of - 2000 feet or so etc.

So really the jump is about 4-5 tenths and 4-5 mph. Or about 40-50 whp. The numbers bear this out as do the compressor maps.

Is the b8 s4 going to pick up thos same 4-5 tenths and mph? I. E. Is it going to run 11.1-11.2 on race and 11.4-11.5 or so on pump? I imagine it will be challenged to do so thanks to the displacement.

Not sure but I think Jspazz was right 2 years ago. I think we will see 11.2-11.3 @ 122-123 on race fuel and all the supporting mods. I don’t think that’s going to be worth $10,000 or my original guess of $12,500.

What do you guys think?

What do you guys think?

Myself personally I think it depends on if they bring in primetime. It would help to have arin back here and posting about this as well… I know there was some anti APR stuff but thats not the end of APR. They might need to clean up there act on somethings and the Rs4 stuff hasnt gone well for them. But EC isnt exactly loved by the entire B8 S4 section. Primetime is someone I think is very respected even if your not an APR fan. Since APR dosent have any more in house S4 cars from what I understand we know good or bad primetime will be honest and he will try to drive the car into the fastest possible times.

When you look at the results of the bigger blower on the RS4 the mph was impressive but with the S4 having a smaller CID the boost levels to make that same power would need to be pretty high as on the Rs4 APR pushed the bigger blower into the 15 plus boost range. Stage 2 B8 S4s are already in that boost range on the stock blower. Its interesting for sure but I think the safe bet is that its adding about 50 plus hp. I think the whispers were that when testing originally for the kit only gave those numbers that it was thought thats not enough…I think the real battle isnt with the blower. The blower is a great unit. I think the real battle is going to be with the cooling and if the stock motor can withstand the boost levels needed to really wow people with a power gain.

Euro, Not sure of all the details in terms of motors and such… To me that’s part of testing and pushing the limits, but yes I believe heat was the major issue then…

Saki, I think your estimates are sound and what I’d expect give or take maybe a tenth on the ET and MPH or two…

Justin, First off thanks for the kind words I really appreciate it! I know Arin is still has his car and I think they may have a dsg car but not positive… I had offered up my car and the offer still stands for about any testing of parts/tunes, they’re well aware of that… Again, honestly not sure how/why they went the route of this fellow in CA via EC? I traded a few quick emails over the weekend with some of the APR folks but nothing of substance on the kit… I’ll say I’m pretty sure that post was a surprise to them… The whole situation is strange at least to me so we’ll see how it plays out… Hopefully, I’ll learn more today assuming they’re back in the office since they had the show over the weekend and it sounds like not many details came out there…

Its good to know that APR still has a few in house test cars. Even if those cars are employee cars. Let us know what you find out I would be interested. I think the B8 S4 is a great car and its going to take great talent and skill to make more power. APR really looked like they had the formula. That post looks more and more like someone trying to capitalize on being part of the APR development.

They said they had an inhouse b8.5 for dsg dev and then we’ve seen a white b8, presumably an employee’s car- also for dsg dev. Then there is arin’s car.

I’d wager someone was getting chummy with EC and was willing to throw down a lot of cash. Hell, we don’t even know whether APR was heading the fab or if Magnusson was instead providing the hardware. Presumably apr did the tune.

I’m surprised about the stock cooling though, that seems suspect given what type of power people are looking to push. The only wildcard is if apr is using alternative fueling like e85 or water/meth.

Drob, eaton doesn’t sell to apr that I’m aware of, and I have a pretty good source at eaton… I know Keith had alluded to it at one point but I believe they source through magnusson like you said, Im sure they collaborate on the design and obviously apr does testing and tuning…

Surprised with the “test” car as well… Pretty sure e85 or w/m aren’t involved at this point… Notice they’ve been silent in that post minus Sean’s chime… Lol.

I think dude gets walked by the GIAC car he claims he is going to run if that car is on race gas… Wonder if there will be vid? ;D

I havent been back to read but did you mention that the guy who made the post with the Stage 3 car is going to try and race a stage 2 car… Raceing a stage 2 GIAC race gas car is a bad idea no matter what your mods. Well raceing against a APR stage 2 car is a hard race to win as well. But why would these people think this is a good idea. Thats a bad idea all the way around. It sounds like someone needs to calm this guy down and get ahold of the situation. This is a possible really big thing for the B8 S4 to have a stage 3 option. To waste that by doing a street race sounds just stupid. Why not just go to the track and prove its faster then every stage 2 car…

I don’t think he’s questioning that (blowing engines in development… That’s fine by anyone I would think. That’s just the cost of pushing the envelope . The key is to do it on your own car rather than on customer cars.

I think he’s just wondering what they changed since blowing engines. If they had to back it off from the 475 whp claims arin made here a year or two ago , that’s going to be tough to sell.

Would be interesting to hear what they’re going to sell it for.

As for racing a giac car on race fuel that will be funny.

I really have no idea what Apr’s involvement even is here. Are ec and Apr still on good terms? Wonder if Apr just sent the test kits to ecode and they sold them to customers.

Why is the guy mentioning Magnuson? If you bought an Apr kit Magnuson would not be involved with you in any way. There’s no chance youd thank them any more than you’d reach out to thank the company that makes the hoses in the kit.

All around very weird.

My stage 2 revo car puts down 365 whp on a Mustang dyno. I’d be happy with 425 whp from an upgrade to a stage 3 kit. If the larger 1.7L plenum introduced throttle lag, I would not do the upgrade. It’s instantaneous now. What I’m saying is K04 turbo response times is not something I would sign up for.
