My impression is that it’s an emergency thoracotomy - we had a big debate about the value of this when I last did ATLS. I reckon they still hadn’t ruled out a tamponade so a last ditch thoracotomy was done. It’s pretty moot by that point.

I’m seeing lividity, one bullet wound, some injury to his right shoulder and the obvious wound to restart his heart but many people were saying he was riddled with bullet wounds and even his bomb vest went off. Is this really him or some poor soul perhaps from Syria…?

no that is him. Confirmed by the doctor who worked on him that this was him and that the picture was taken at the hospital, but not by his staff (likely by a cop as the pic was taken after the body was turned over to authorities).

There are at least 3 bullet wounds that I can see. His bomb vest did not go off. They said he suffered an injury from one of the bombs, however that wasn’t deadly serious. It was like burns and shrapnel. Could be on his hands or legs.

Anyway, definitely him.

Apparently, he was shot once or twice then captured by police when his gun ran out of rounds, handcuffed. Then his bro ran him over in the SUV he jacked while getting away.

I’m really not sure what you guys are debating this for. 9-11 could have been worse too if they had waited until later in the day and the towers were completely full.

Could it have been worse? Sure. Was it poorly thought out? Far from it.

If this bomber would have tried to drop these bombs off an hour or two earlier, there would have been absolutely no space to put them. Shoulder to shoulder people. It takes 15-20 mins to walk a block when the crowds are like that. How is someone supposed to drop a bomb off and still escape in that type of crowd? You might think it was amateurish, but coming from my perspective of having attended 5 of these marathons, and been at the finish line for 3 of them, their actions seem planned and calculated to me.

Also, the “amateurish” homemade bombs are a lot harder to trace. Higher grade explosives would narrow it down a lot more than some guy using gun powder from a sporting goods store. Granted, they do a lot less damage, but they still get the point across.

Finally, regarding the injuries, I’m not sure how you can consider 3 people dead, 14 people with amputated limbs, around a 100 hospitalized overnight, and about a dozen still in critical condition a day later to be anything near the same as the 100+ runners who were hospitalized due to heat last year. Being hospitalized for dehydration is something that takes time to fix, but isn’t that serious (and self-inflicted). Having your leg blown off or shrapnel embed in your body, totally a different level.

911 was a total inside job, cant compare 911 to this.
