a co-worker lives in watertown near where the standoff was, it’ll be interesting to see what he’s got to say about last night/this morning. he was also at the finish line of the marathon, his brother finished an hour before and they were at a bar when the bombs went off.

it’ll be fun giving him shit about moving from metrowest to watertown to “be closer to the excitement”.

I’m not trying to start a heated argument, but how many people in Boston would feel a little better with a gun in their home in case this nut case tries to break in and hold them hostage or steal their vehicle?

All the authorities can do is recommend to stay inside and lock your doors…lol I would just be sitting back and waiting for him to come to my front door, but where are the people without a gun or anti-gun? Probably over at their neighbors house…who has guns.

Its part of the metro Boston area, technically a separate city but its right there near Boston proper, just west of Cambridge. I imagine Ontario or Toronto are similar.

Yeah if I were there it’d be nice to have some protection. Boston is a tough town to carry in (Menino is co-founder of the mayor’s against illegal guns) so I doubt many people are armed.

You also have to be careful what you do with your gun in MA. We have a castle doctrine law in place but there is a recommendation from the DA to retreat as far as possible before firing. You also need to be in fear of death/serious bodily injury (they are armed and coming at you), in this case you may get a pass since they called the guy a terrorist and he has a history of bombing (it’d be reasonable to assume he had concealed bombs etc), but typically if an able bodied man draws a gun on an unarmed person in MA they’re looking at some legal trouble.

I’m really not sure what you guys are debating this for. 9-11 could have been worse too if they had waited until later in the day and the towers were completely full.

Could it have been worse? Sure. Was it poorly thought out? Far from it.

If this bomber would have tried to drop these bombs off an hour or two earlier, there would have been absolutely no space to put them. Shoulder to shoulder people. It takes 15-20 mins to walk a block when the crowds are like that. How is someone supposed to drop a bomb off and still escape in that type of crowd? You might think it was amateurish, but coming from my perspective of having attended 5 of these marathons, and been at the finish line for 3 of them, their actions seem planned and calculated to me.

Also, the “amateurish” homemade bombs are a lot harder to trace. Higher grade explosives would narrow it down a lot more than some guy using gun powder from a sporting goods store. Granted, they do a lot less damage, but they still get the point across.

Finally, regarding the injuries, I’m not sure how you can consider 3 people dead, 14 people with amputated limbs, around a 100 hospitalized overnight, and about a dozen still in critical condition a day later to be anything near the same as the 100+ runners who were hospitalized due to heat last year. Being hospitalized for dehydration is something that takes time to fix, but isn’t that serious (and self-inflicted). Having your leg blown off or shrapnel embed in your body, totally a different level.

I went out of my way three times to say i wasn’t belittling the damage of people dying etc so I am not sure how you missed that.

However I was saying it could have been a lot worse. You agree that it could have. Great. A pair of bomb blasts like this in modestly busy areas was fortunately only enough to kill 3 people and maim another 20. When I first heard that two bomb blasts went off at the busy Boston marathon finish line I immediately thought ‘holy fuck this could be horrific’. It was, but on a multiple bombs in a busy place basis, it wasn’t in all honesty.

I also don’t think this was incredibly well orchestrated. If you do something like this for Al qaeda, you die. Simple. These amateurs however ran away from the scene. They will be caught and wish they had died.

My impression is that it’s an emergency thoracotomy - we had a big debate about the value of this when I last did ATLS. I reckon they still hadn’t ruled out a tamponade so a last ditch thoracotomy was done. It’s pretty moot by that point.
