The 3.0 movement

So, after some thought, it sounds like a good idea to start the layout of the expectations. This seems to be a safe place to do it.

This is the list of things that people have thrown out there.

Tune.

Power wise:
Were looking for a solid 30hp.
Would like to see close to 20whp and 20wtq.

Most of this, is going to depend on if the current exhaust/intake can support this without pushing the motor too hard. For sure the Pre cats have to go.

Fuel mileage: I Would like to see a 3/5 mile Per gallon gain. This is about average. Concluding you are not driving the car in the power sport fashion all the time.

Over All driving: A more Rapid response to throttle Vs. power. We don’t want this by using the over travel of the pedal. In other words we want the 10% throttle to be 10% throttle, just more power. Not how others have done it where 10% throttle = 40% throttle. This is fake power. We want more power… More ACTUAL power in the entire power band.

This is just open talk. Lets take it from here.

Awesome! I like the sound of those numbers, definitely looking forward to improved TIP performance ;D

Guys, feel free to ask questions or add suggestions, all input is valued!

Count, what additional information do you need from us to get this going?

Great stuff guys.

I brought this Idea up, thought having a clear place for you guys to talk would work great. Ive seen first hand what great tuning can do. I remember when the RS4 was a lame duck. Now it looks to be head of the pack.

Im really excited to see what you guys do with the 3.0L

At any time if the trolls roll in let me know. We will put a stop to it.

PLEASE guys feel free to please HOST your pictures HERE And The only promise I want is when you guys really get the power out of the cars that you exclusively post the videos here.

Thanks God, for popping in and saying something. I think we all will appreciate that.

Meistah, Looks like a few more guys signed up. Looks like the Admin just needs to approve them.

Great question about the needed information.

I want to start a FAQ for the cars as well so we can all really start getting solid information about the cars.

Before that. It would be helpful to know.

Year. manual or auto.
If they have a vag-com.
I would love to get ECU part numbers. You can get that with both the Vag-com or you can just pull your ECU box top and take a pic.
I believe the guys with the AWD Auto tiptronic cars should have the TCU under the passenger side seat.

That’s a good start. Then from that Anything that guys would like to see or any suggestions its a good time to start asking.

Excellent, I don’t have vagcom but I’ll get you all that info tomorrow.

That really allows a lot of prep work. The ECU part #.

Your a manual?

how are your coil packs?
What kind of spark plugs?

Definitely excited about this. How much would it cost to get set up with a vag com?

Would anyone else like to see the oxygen sensors coded out? Do we need them?

This is a big thing in the B5 S4. That and the EGT. While you don’t have EGT’s I think we can do something with the rear 02’s.

I really need to see the ECU program to let you know more. We will have to look and see how much of the program uses the rear 02’s for input. Even if its a large amount, It can still be done. Is this a easy thing… NO can it be done. Sure.

Real exciting time for you guys. You got the right guy on the job. I think this is just like where the B6 and B7 S4 started. Not much was there and what was there (chip wise) was a joke…

Some of these reviews might be inspirational considering what the 3.0 has had to offer in the past

This also. this is from my old A6. the tip chips are a real great advancement. I think VAST stoppede the 4.2 and trans program. So now JHM has taken it over.

Holy sh*t, just watched the video of your A6 tip shifting, amazing!

Very interested to see how this works out for you guys.

I’d think some piggie pipes would be a great cheap mod.

You guys may do well with a 2.25" catback (versus the S4’s running best w/ the 2.5"). iirc the S4 catbacks bolt up to the 3.0’s so you may be able to snag catbacks from S4 guys upsizing. If you’re looking for a 2.5" the Magnaflow S4 catback is a great deal.

Maybe someone could post a pic of their engine bay so we can get an idea of what we’re working with?

I think this is a GREAT thing and would love to see inprovement across the board for us 3.0 guys!

Having and still owning an S4 and looking to buy an S5 there are tons of options, but none for my daily driver the A4 3.0.

Starting out nothing great is expected but with JHM involved I think this program can far exceed anyones expectations(SC/TT)Just dreaming but not impossible.

I think alot of this will be possible with help from everyone, log’s(Vagcom) 1/4 mile times, 0-60 pulls and what all of us would like to see inprovement in. Especially with the input of the experience coming from guy’s like justin, beemercer, and JHM.

I just browsed through some threads on AZ, I think our stock exhaust size is in fact 2.25" already… I’d like to know the actual benefits of increased size. I know justincredible had a formula to calculate the efficiency of the current exhaust, vs the gains from a larger sized one.

For the sake of power. Its best to make sure 100% what you have.

Before anyone looks to far into things. Its best to start looking at what you have.

The Dp’s could be complete crap. Or they could be great and its a waste to even look at the Dp’s and its only the cat back you need to look at.

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/408498-B6-A4-3.0-OEM-exhaust-diameter?highlight=3.0+stock+exhaust+size

everyone says 2.25"… ill go measure tomorrow, not sure what part I’m supposed to be measuring though, obviously not the diameter of the tip itself… could I just measure the circumference of the tube and do the math?

Measure the out side diameter of the pipes. I would take a few pictures. measure the diameter at just past the Dp’s where they meet the cat back.

Here is an old reference that I’ve used as a pretty good starting point for exhaust systems.

Here’s a quick table that shows how many CFM each common pipe size will flow, as well as the estimated max horsepower for each pipe size:

Pipe Diameter (inches) Pipe Area (in2) Total CFM (est.) Max HP Per Pipe Max HP For A Dual Pipe System
1 1/2 1.48 171 78 155
1 5/8 1.77 203 92 185
1 3/4 2.07 239 108 217
2 2.76 318 144 289
2 1/4 3.55 408 185 371
2 1/2 4.43 509 232 463
2 3/4 5.41 622 283 566
3 6.49 747 339 679
3 1/4 7.67 882 401 802
3 1/2 8.95 1029 468 935

NOTE: These numbers are just estimates. All pipes are assumed to be 16 gauge steel.

Also I was wondering if there is a short thow shifter available, possible ram air system

Those are crank hp figures I would assume.

I think a ram air on the 3.0 would be a great idea.

Ram air would be great, I bet the stock airboxes don’t have the lower air inlet like the 05+ S4s. 04 S4s only have two inlets (the hood scoop, and a rear facing scoop in the fender well), but the 05s add a 3rd inlet from the passenger side fog area that is controlled by a vacuum actuated valve.

If the 3.0s do not have this inlet, then adding a ram air scoop by the foglight would be great. It may be necessary to actually remove the foglight to get the best fitment though, and possible an auxiliary radiator (if the 3.0 is equipped). Additionally a little trick would be to take the fender well inlet and flip it around so it faces forwards… the rear facing inlet will negate any real intake tract pressurization.
