Hope it’s going better than ZT’s. ZT is at a standstill with Jspec, in fact I believe his car is now being taken to shop # 3. I don’t know exactly what happened or didn’t happen because little progress has been made in several months.
What makes a B5 so hard to build right? I would follow a reliable proven build to a T. Built block, built heads, nice turbos, proper fueling and a good tune.
The problem with the B5 is that anytime you ‘build’ something, three other things break.
There’s a thread on here about ‘Race Wars’ in Pennsylvania. Basically a bunch of B5 S4s getting together to do pulls. In the same thread on Audizine, half the guys who have committed to going are now pulling out because their shit is broken.
Of the ones who do show up, you’ve got another half who are scared to run their car at the Friday night dragstrip get together in case their shit breaks some more.
It’s areally strange obsession this B5 S4. When we are seeing the B7 RS4 now making B5 racegas superstar type performance…on pump gas…you have to wonder how long people will cling to this notion that the B5 is the best and not just cheap.
While I don’t doubt some of the guys abilities to build, wrench, DIY, whatever you want to call it, I have a sneaking suspicion many of these issues are due to back yard mechanics that are in way over their heads to reliably execute results.
I’m under no illusion that they are the best by any means, but I sure do enjoy owning mine.
Sidebar, any big builds with regard to c5 rs6? What are the typical “upgrades” aside from transmission swap to ditch the tip? Has CV tuned any? Would like to own one, maintenance and all.
RS6? We’ve seen a few run in the 11s @ high teens with tune/piggies. Not sure on big builds. Check out RS246 … they have a great C5 Rs6 section. Unfortunately nobody seems to acceleration test their cars.
ZT mentioned he had a buyer but its hard to have a legitimate buyer when the motor is sitting on a shelf.
I understand part of the reason for ZT’s troubles but I can’t wrap my arms around what has held up Jspec. Sure he had to fix some things from the previous shop, and yes the turbos popped but still… It’s been with him for six months and the motor is still out…
These cars are like crack and they also require a ton of patience. I’m seeing stage 3 builds listed for less than 10k. Repair cost are still the same but majority of the owners are not. Slowly but surely things fall apart, then the corner cutting begins and it’s never the same.
I’m guessing if zero didn’t have an issue with coming up with the labor money, j-spec weren’t qualified to execute the job. I bet if it was an oil change, they would have completed the task.
Look at amd… Their biggest cheerleader is TwitS4estate. AMD took ages to do his build, then sent it back across the country to twit.
After a couple of weeks he ‘blew headgaskets because of bad bolts’ lol. So what does twit do? Find someone local to do a relative straightforward repair? Nope… Sends it across the country again to AMD because they’re good guys. Yeah… Headgaskets. Sure twits. Lol.
That was last fucking June. Car is still on the shelf. Right beside killeds4 whose b5 motor was blown by amd on the amd dyno. Guess he had ‘headgaskets’ problems too

Sure, what would you like to know?
Build was complete when I posted. Now just enjoying driving my car everyday. Tweeking the tune little by little, and once each month for the last two months, I’ve treated myself to 5 gallons of GT260 Plus NL (Unleaded 104 Octane).
I’ll be installing water/methanol injection in a couple weeks. Just waiting on some AN fittings along with trying to decide whether to go with a tank hidden where the 6 disc changer, nav, and toolkit would go or just using the window washer reservoir.
I’m also taking body panels off, one by one, and spraying them Charcoal Metallic. Side-skirts are this week’s project => so I can still drive to work in it.
I have an '07 Sport Trac V8 for the winters, hauling, and camping - but I’d always rather be driving the A6.
I went with the cd change spot for my 1 gallon meth tank and I mounted my pump in the engine bay so I could keep the pressurized line as short as possible.
