The Skiing/Boarding Thread

I have a couple of friends who raced their whole lives from kids through school and national teams. The courses they run…you can’t imagine how steep they are until you stand there and look. TV doesn’t work. Then you add in the speed they’re moving at, WELL over 100 kmh…it’s fucking crazy.

You also can’t imagine the runs they ski at a resort when you go away with these guys. It’s weird…they ski an entirely different resort to normal folks. A resort that doesn’t even exist. Glades rips through the forest between two proper groomed runs that the rest of us ski. It’s so strange how comfortable they are being so close to what would be certain death for most of us.

I never raced, but almost exclusively ski in the trees, been doing it since I was about 10. Its not too hard, just need some confidence and a bit of instruction (got my gf skiing some of the hardest ‘official’ glades out there after 1 year on skis). Trees out this way are typically very dense as well, which always makes things interesting.

Well that weekend was a bust. Got so much snow and wind the mountain closed Saturday (both by me actually) and then Sunday waited for half the day hoping they would open but had a few avalanches across the road. 36" in two days will do that I guess. Thursday and Friday were awesome though, yesterday wasn’t bad just some heavy snow.

Finally! It’s dumping snow up in the PNW!

We had a winter storm advisory on Sunday and I got through before they closed the pass for avalanche control.

The resort I go to had 17 inches of snow that day…

Snowboarding was awesome but visibility was very bad… White out conditions which meant that I couldn’t really see the terrain very well. Had two pretty gnarly wipe outs.

Went skiing for my first time on Saturday… loved it. Only fell twice and that was while I was standing at the bottom screwing around…Apparently I’m a natural ;D

Had the confidence to tackle a black diamond but things started getting pretty icy later in the day and I figured I should knock on wood that I had not injured myself yet. I do think I’ve exacerbated as suspected MCL tear, however. Next time I’ll go all out…

^ awesome. Where at? Wilmot, Alpine, devils head or cascade I’d guess.

Took my 5 yr old God son for his first time last Saturday. No fussing or belly aching, just smiles and fun. Good times.

I tweaked my knee too last trip. Been a couple weeks and its still iffy. I have both acls already repaired and one repair completely blown out again. Fully detached repair in left knee. Been skiing pretty hard for 10 yrs in this state. Guess it finally is catching up with me.

Alpine. Wish I had picked up the sport long ago. It’s a shame I discovered it so late in this season; I would have definitely made more than a couple trips up there. I think I’m going to pick up my own boots and skis for next winter. Friends and I are already discussing a Colorado trip.

It was pretty entertaining to watch the young kids fly down the hill at warp speed without a care in the world.

I’ve had this knee injury for about a year now and I’m pretty confident it’s a torn MCL but I have yet to actually visit a doctor.

Boots, yes. Do it. Get properly custom fitted. Skis you could forgoe. Just demo the latest and greatest and what’s best for the days conditions. I have owned multiple pairs over the years. This last trip out to CO, I brought them but demoed 4/5 days. I like having my own gear, but something to be said for not needing to lug around everything. Just a thought. Boots need to be comfortable though. I had struggled for years. Finally had a tech at telluride sports mold, grind, nip, tuck and a couple hours later, viola. Best $40 I’ve spent skiing. Some places charge outrageous prices to do “custom” work. Ask the locals where to go. They will lead you in right direction like in my situation.

Viking is pretty reputable in chicagoland area. My buddy had his tweaked a bit also even mentioned by tech in telluride. Said if he needed more work done to hit them up.

Skiing is def one of my favorite things to do in life. Damn knee issues are a concern though.

Went back to Alpine yesterday. Had a great time. Tackled the blacks and had a blast doing it. Definitely a lot more fun than the blues. I need to get some warmer gear for next year. It was about 10 Fahrenheit with a subzero windchill and despite my best efforts to stay warm, my face and fingers started to hurt by day’s end.

Good jobs on tackling some black runs ynnek! Great feeling when it all comes together. I know the feeling on the cold, it’s -27F outside right now and I struggled to do the shovelling/snowblowing.

When’s it’s that cold I’ll take the snowboard over the skis cos it’s easier to put those little handwarmers in gloves and boots in snowboard mode

I’m probably just a limey pussy but these things are a godsend. Even if you’re skiing they’re great to have around for lift rides.

edit: haha just realised where Alpine is. You must’ve been been fucking freezing! Strong work
