The sun will soften the snow, that may be what you’re experiencing. April & May are my favorite, the foul weather fans gave already broken out the golf clubs, its T-shirt and jean weather, the bumps are soft, the sun shines all day and the snow is soft, fast and wet.
It was really the only time our whole group of friends could make the trip. Plus we got a killer deal on the house we booked. Just got an email from the lessor yesterday:
[quote]I’m not sure how it happened, but this rental got booked at $400.00 a night. Our normal rental amount for this time period is $800.00 a night. I will honor the amount, as it is my fault. I should have checked it before I accepted it. So know that you got a smokin’ deal!

I take it March is better thanks to warmer weather?

Hahahaha that’s great. In that case who cares, that’s an amazing deal. In March there are less tourists, the snow is better, and yeah it’s warmer too.

My SF/Tahoe trip looks like it’s turning to shit with the amount of snow in Tahoe so I’m looking to re-route to Denver for roughly the same cost of the flight to SFO.
What’s the average mileage/time from DIA to one of the resorts?
Is it better to lodge in Denver and drive to one of the resorts or lodge within one of the resorts?
Any recommendation for a particular resort?
Any recommendation for decently cheap yet I’m not gonna get murdered lodging?
Depends on where you go for mileage from Denver. I’m just south of downtown and the closest place is Loveland which is 60 miles from me and its a $63/day pass. If you return the pass in 4 hours they refund you $12 so $51 for a 4 hour day or 11:30-close. Check above for photos.
Next is Arapahoe Basin which is 70 miles from me. It’s $85/day there. I have only been there once so can’t speak too much about it.
Next is Keystone which is just past A. Basin. It’s $120-$140 per day for a pass. For the price, I would say this is not worth the extra money over Loveland. But, I think if you’re cool skiing these 3 resorts you should lodge here and then you’re within 8+/- miles of all 3. Last time I got a really nice single bed hotel room for $120/night iirc.
Next is Breckenridge which is 88 miles from me. It’s $100-$118 per day depending on what lift package you buy. I personally love it there but it is one of the more touristy spots to ski so depending on when you come out it may be busy. This resort is also way bigger than keystone so it makes the extra cost worth it to me. They’ve got vacation deals here: http://www.breckenridge.com/Plan-a-Trip/Vacation-Deals-and-Packages/Offer-Explorer.aspx?INTCMP=BR000072
It’ll be close to $200/night for lodging.
Vail is next which is about 103 miles from me. This is my favorite place because it’s massive, but it’s also pretty much the most expensive. Tickets are $106-$120 per day. Vacation deals here: http://www.vail.com/plan-your-trip/vacation-deals-and-packages/offer-explorer.aspx
You’ll end up spending at least $300/night for lodging. It’s expensive but again I love it here.
As far as staying in Denver and commuting each day, DON’T. You’ll end up spending the same on lodging pretty much and drive yourself crazy in traffic or just driving up every day and you’ll spend more because of gas. There’s nothing better than waking up a little bit later at the bottom of the mountain and walking out and then right back in when you’re done. Driving through traffic after a long day of skiing sucks.
Also, for ski lunches, save yourself some money and pack your own lunch. They have plates, silverware, and microwaves for you to use in the dining areas. Average price for a 1 liter Gatorade for example is like $5. You’ll spend a fortune if you eat there everyday. I usually make a sandwich or bring ramen and have some sides like granola bars or trail mix. Bring some Gatorade or water bottles with too. I ski with a backpack to carry that stuff. Kinda sucks on the lift but it doesn’t really bother me.
There are more places to ski but they’re farther. Telluride for example is 330 miles from me. Aspen is 202 miles and $129/day. Copper mountain is only 85 miles. It’s $89/day for a lift ticket but I haven’t been there so can’t speak too much about it. .
Make sure you buy your lift passes online. You get killed at the window. Also, check craigslist, you may get lucky and find somebody selling an Epic Season Pass which will get you in everywhere. If you can find somebody that looks remotely close to you, you can buy it from them.
I think I’ve cemented myself to Brecken with Vail as a second choice. My trip will happen at the end of January to first of Feb so in about two weeks; I also realized it’s the week after the X-Games!
Thanks for the lookout on those package deals, I completely forgot about that aspect. For the moment, I’m scouring VRBO for lodging within Breck or neighboring Frisco.
Awesome. I’ll see if I can make it up the 28th or 29th. Sorry, no avant, just a sedan. You’ll definitely want to go for a ride in Denver though. The elevation up by Breckenridge basically neuters the car I need to get an elevation tune and that 3.5" pulley.
