The Skiing/Boarding Thread

Jay Peak gets quite a bit of snow and Killington can’t be a total rink.

yeah the green mtns get a good amount, its rarely very light and powdery though. the one powder day I got last winter was super dense and heavy, still fun but what a workour

These are the days orthopedic surgeons dream of! Knees popping left and right…$$$$$$

Nakiska is opening Saturday. Not the best hill but I’ll take it at this point. Getting the rock board out of storage :+1:

Killington has a shit powered gondola now… pretty neat. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/vermont-ski-resort-unveils-gondola-powered-entirely-cow-175051844.html

not a surprise coming from VT lol

Hmmmm JPO has got me planning a trip to AB… never been before, where’s good to spend a week?

Man that is a tough question. When I was living out east (and younger) and made trips out here I always used to do a bit of a tour. I’d start in Banff and either hit up Sunshine an/or Lake Louise and then head off to Fernie (in BC) with a day stop at Castle (it’s on the way to Fernie, is QUIET and good). If I was really ambitious I’d also head off to Revelstoke or Nelson BC.

It really depends on what you want. Neither Lake Louise or Sunshine have good on hill accommodations (sunshine has at least some but a week would be a stretch cause there is NOTHING to do at night). But both are an easy drive from Banff which has a range of hotel options (Banff Springs to Joes motel) and a lot of stuff to do ranging from sophomoric drunken STD chasing to reasonably highbrow dining. And there is always Chateau Lake Louise which is like a 3 minute drive from the Lake Louise Ski area. Additionally you could easily do day trips from Banff to Kickinghorse in BC which is an awesome hill. Out of Sunshine and Louise, Sunshine has better snow but Louise may have better terrain - both are good. On thing I’d encourage if you have the skills is to hit up Delirium Dive in Sunshine. It is gate accessed and you need avalanche gear to get in (rent in Banff if needed). It wont always be open and when it is it wont always be good. But when it’s good it’s good.

Fernie is a 4+ hour drive from Banff and is awesome. The town itself is small and friendly and Fernie usually gets an obscene amount of snow and has a crap tone of great terrain. I love Fernie.

If I had to pick a place to spend the week around here? I’d personally split it between Banff and Fernie.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, JPO. We’ll probably stay in Banff as we won’t have a car. We’ll probably do some sort of bus from Calgary. Out of interest, do car rental agencies put winter rubber on in AB? My experience: They just leave you with shitty all seasons in BC and here in ON. I wish there was some easy way of magically making my S4 appear in AB!

Even if we had a car, Fernie looks like a bit of a stretch, although I was looking at a job in Cranbrook, so it’s good to know that small town is near a nice hill!

Edit: also looking at Lake Tahoe in California where I might get the use of my cousins Evo 8 (modded, not sure what exactly, except it has an EBC) for the week. Some of the small hills out there are opening this weekend. Crazy to think while I sipped a beer on a patio in 25 deg C weather today…

nice, I may be out at tahoe this year. GF’s friend has a condo so we are considering it.

Judging by the impossibly slow rental cars I passed on the highway this week during an all out snowstorm they are rocking all seasons.

Not surprised. As Jonny Foreigner Immigrant, I find this somewhat annoying. I’m always a bit surprised when people round here (snow belt part of Ontario) get by on all seasons. “Oh yeah I have no problem with grip, my car keeps moving.” It’s not about how well you get moving, it’s about how well you can stop! Aaargh /rant

I’m with you on this. I’ve got my end covered but it really pissed me off when others put me and mine at risk with their cheap and lazy decisions RE tires.

Out here a car can go basically forever without an inspection and so can run around wild on the oldest, baldest tires in christendom for as long as natural selection will allow.

I was also thinking Killington/Stowe that way I can take my car but I hear it’s more of an icy, hard packed experience rather than the blistering powder days I’ve seen in BC and CO.

If you were to come out this way I’d personally do Mad River Glen and Jay Peak instead of Killington.

Let me know if you do plan on coming out this way, I’m only 3hrs away from killington.

^ snow plow boarder :frowning: these kind ruin all the powder in one pass!

Those guys in the sunshine one? Yeah, the top part may have been a bit over their heads.
