Lol great music :P. Seems like the 3.0 would have easily taken it with one passenger and the newer tune… or a 6speed. Pretty impressive results.
Just out of curiosity, when you are racing in a tiptronic, do you use S mode or tip?

how fast were you guys going by the finish?
it would be interesting to see 0-30 and mid-range pulling power side-by-side.
My 3.0 feels way faster than my old 1.8T, and cruises at 80mph much more comfortably. It’s just much more powerful in daily situations and you don’t have to think about it, it’s always on tap.
Anything above 90-100, the limiting factor is the suspension. If I were going to the track, yes, you would definitely want a 4.2 or some kind of forced induction on the 3.0
Good question, more details would be interesting. I would imagine too at certain speeds we might have an advantage.
Next step up from the stage 2+ would be a K04’ed car, I know a few local guys who would probably be up for doing a few runs in the future.
So am I the only one who can’t view videos on this website?
It was annoying before, but now it’s just aggravating since I was really wanting to see this
Does it give you an error? I can view it at work, and our internet is very locked down, so that seems surprising… might be your browser? I’m viewing it in firefox if that helps.
actually the problem was Firefox. I opened it up on Safari and it worked. It hung up every other second and had to re-buffer about 20 times, but I did get a chance to see it.
Figured it might be the browser… either reinstall flash on firefox, update to latest version, or reinstall firefox altogether. Should fix it moving forward. Or just use safari
I was doing some thinking and I was wondering why are we putting our V6 cars up against a 4cyl?? honestly in my opinion its not worth our time, I don’t know much about 1.8t’s and I’m sure they are quick cars of course cuz they are Audi’s. BUT, I was thinking shouldn’t we be putting our car against the B6 S4?
Why we should compare ourselves to the lowest model that Audi makes. I personally would like to start seeing us up against the S4’s because I think we could realistically beat them with a few good mods. In my mind you get better faster by playing against something or someone higher up and higher up is a S4 not a 1.8t.
Any thoughts?
Side note, I loved the video and I too think if the 3.0 was a 6speed it would of won plus less the extra passenger. Where in Cali JHM located? because I am in Reno, so Cali is not far from me.
Interesting train of thought. The reasoning behind the 1.8T comparison is that horsepower wise, various stages of 1.8T are what we are immediately comparable to. An S4 comes with 2 extra cylinders and 120 extra hp, while it would be awesome, I’m not sure if that is feasible to match or beat with n/a boltons. Don’t get me wrong, very cool goal and one I’d love to see, but one step at a time.
The 1.8T benchmark gives us an idea of where the JHM tune lines up in terms of real world performance. It takes a decent amount of mods to get to the performance level of the 1.8T in the video (FULL exhaust, upgraded injectors, tune, etc), whereas all it took was a mild tune to match it with the 3.0.
Now we almost know (not 100%) that the current JHM 2.0 tune when compared to an identically specced 1.8T with full stage 2+ upgrades is faster. Next step in my mind would be to see what the tune and TCU tune compares to, or the JHM tune revised with a catless setup. For the latter I think we would be looking into K04 territory, which maxed out is around 200whp. Next step would be stage 3 and/or frankenturbo, which is also around stock S4 territory.
3.0 stock = 1.8T stage 1+ or 2?
3.0 v1.5 91 octane tune <= 1.8T stage 2+
3.0 v2.0 91 octane tune > 1.8T stage 2+?
3.0 v2.0 93/94 octane tune = ?
3.0 tune w/ catless = ?
3.0 tune w/ catless w/ spacers? = ?
The aforementioned comparisons are what I am thinking we will see in the near future, for tip users this comparison would be altered when JHM does the TCU tune, as that will make a huge difference for us as well. The tune itself will see more power in the lower rpm range, and our shift pattern will be much more immediate and precise.
WOW, really was not expecting that strong of a race off the bat, especially considering all that is done to keaton’s car. . . Yea, this isn’t even a challenge anymore haha.
Just out of curiousity (b/c I don’t know how the 1.8’s stack up either), what is the stg 3? Basically Keaton’s car + a ko4? If so, how does that compare to a stock S4 / what type power does a standard stg 3 put down (I’m guessing your standard stg 3 isn’t built motor correct?).
I kinda like the idea of seeing a stock S4 run a well equipped 3.0, I’m not expecting the 3.0 to embarrass a S4, but after seeing that video, I wouldn’t be surprised if a 3.0 could keep it within a car length or two, especially at the higher speeds where the S4’s torque isn’t as much of a factor and they’re both bricks at that point.
I think the catless & catback JHM 93 tuned 3.0 with manifold spacers and lightweight wheels will REALLY be a strong car, especially considering where you’re starting at. Going catless SHOCKED me how much low end torque you pick up, and when you mate that with a good catback, the gains are even better.
B6/7 S4 owners used to compare/ be compared to B5 S4 owners. This was because they were the closest other model that was similar in power. You didn’t see them always comparing themselves to 4.2 RS4’s & R8’s just because they were the higher platform. Basically just compare what else is close (and who is doing the shit-talking)
That being said, once more bolt-ons are made (most importantly, catless DP’s) I have a feeling the 3.0’s wont be all that far away from a stock 4.2, altho I don’t really see us beating them (especially if it’s not stock) without going FI
This is what I’d be looking for. We’re not trying to be any record holders, but a good exhaust system+ 93oct JHM tune and maybe a couple bolt-ons should really make the 3.0 a different car.
I was pretty excited when I saw the video too ;D
When comparing stages I like to use APR as a point of reference. While not necessarily the fastest, all of their setups are quite reliable and the stages are well laid out. K04 is actually not stage 3, it somewhere in between, often referred to as stage 2+ or stage 2++. Any way you swing it K04 max is about 200whp (that’s on a custom eurodyne tune)
Stage 3 is a significantly bigger turbo with supporting mods. Most kits use a GTRS eliminator, and a frankenturbo would be comparable as well. Usually 340+ CHP, stock S4 territory. Stage 3 is doable on a stock motor. Apr quotes it at 340/332 hp/tq (crank figures). Anything beyond stage3 and you will probably start breaking things on the stock motor.
I agree, I think the 3.0 with the final tune, catless w/ spacers would be VERY interesting to see against a stock S4. CountVohn mentioned the limiting factor of the current tune is the cat, as it gets hot really quickly, but that there’s a ton of untapped power waiting to be used when it is removed.
Since the 1.8 guys often brag about how cost effective it is to upgrade a 1.8 as opposed to a 3.0, here’s a thought:
Stage 2+
tune - $500
Diverter valve - $140
throttle body hose - $135
turbo compressor inlet hose - $135
exhaust $1000
upgraded intercooler - $900
test pipe / HFC $150-250
$3000! Although for pure performance you should be able to get away with skipping the intercooler, so $2000, and knock off a few hundred for a cheaper exhaust, so $1500 at the lowest, buying all your parts new. Arguably cheaper used, at that price range you could get a frankenturbo, but then you run into the unforseen costs of supporting mods.
JHM tune - $5-600? To be fair you might need to replace your coilpacks for the recall, but that is free at your local Audi dealership.
Sorry for not more details on the race. It was late when I got a chance to clean up the video and post it.
The race was from about 30+ to give the 1.8T the right gear ratio no not have boost issues and because its a safe speed to start at.
The race took place to speeds just over the posted limit for that road and nothing too fast that it would be considered dangerous.
For now keatons car was the only thing that made sense and with all the 1.8T talk it seemed to make the most sense. We will stand it off again with keatons car when the current mods area ll added to the 3.0.
I also agree that in time… Not now that the S4 stock would be a good benchmark. I think were quite a few mods from that being able to be a realistic race for the 3.0.
LOL, you guys are on crack.
The 4.2 has OVER 100 more HP than the 3.0
It has 300Nm on tap at just above idle and over 400Nm without breaking 3500rpms.
I’ve read that the S4’s transmission is in the 3.0, which is great. You know you will never break it w/ mods.
I expect the S4 to cleanly blow the 3.0 out of the water in any parameter, and easily.
The V8 S4 is a great, great car. The only reason I passed and got the 3.0 is the S4 has some severe downsides:
killer maintenance and horrid mpg’s.
The 1.8T stg2 race is a nice reality check, but anyone that owned both can tell you that.
Audi’s are not fast. They are quick and well handling cars and the quattro is, imo, gold.
If you want a really fast car, you have to shop german rwd sports sedans with boosted inline 6’s and V8s.
I’ve heard that “your on crack” comment before.
Anytime anyone does something new to something that wasn’t considered possible those words are commonly uttered.
Can the 3.0 modded meet the same power of the 4.2? I wouldn’t say it’s impossible at all.
Would it be cost effective? Well that is the big question.
The fact that it’s even being attempted is what’s important here.
It’s exciting to see the potential of a motor that was thought to be left out to dry.
I’d be happy as hell just even coming close to a 4.2 keeping things N/A with some bolt on mods and a tune.
It would still be cheaper than forking over the money to buy and S4 and keep up with the maintenance.
As far as looking for RWD german cars for “Fast” cars…meh.
I’ll be happy to nose up with any RWD cars with my MKI FWD German Rabbit when it’s finished.
A strong reality check is the the S4 will destroy the 3.0. There over 2 second faster in the 1/4 stock and they have gobs more TQ. Then again a M3 will destroy the 3.0 so will a vet so will a mustang. Etc Etc. BUT…
I still think looking into the future we are good to set the realistic bench mark to say. Our end goal would be to come close to this car or that car. I think the 3.0 well modded should be a worthy contender for the stock S4. or I would love to see us be able to reach that goal.
You nailed it Count. We aren’t looking to make a race car, lots of us have “go fast” cars or bikes in our shed for that. We are taking an Audi platform that was previously made fun of for being slow and a waste of money, and already JHM has shown with a simple beta tune that it can be so much more.
I’ve not been a part of or read any of the hate for the 3.0
Being real about the motor and capability of the car is why a comparison to the S4 is comical.
The reason I listed the tq numbers of the S4 is the same reason I love that car - gobs of torque down low and blissful, real world power. The comments here make it sound like you’ve never driven a S4 before.
There is some serious underestimating of how good a S4 is.
The 3.0 is not even close. We are talking about some huge margins.
This is only achievable with forced induction and other mods.
The reason I got the 3.0 is that it’s a solid, great motor that is a no-muss-no-fuss, big improvement over the 1.8T’s in just about every way.
Wishful thinking is not going to make a 3.0 as fast as a 4.2 That sounds a lot like 1.8T guys saying they are faster than 3.0’s.
The most benefit would come from comparing a modded 3.0 to is a stock 3.0
this will give you a baseline and how much improved the mods are.
That is the real parameter of net improvement.
1.8T drag is a great reality check for everyone about the 3.0 but there is a lot of mental leapfrogging going on to think the S4 is another domino to topple
I’m all for developing mods and interested. It’s all great and can only benefit, bring new info to light, new mods, new thought, etc.
Certainly, a car this heavy will always benefit from more HP. Like Kirstie Alley at a Vegas buffet- the key is to keep the meat of the tq curve low and fat and plenty of it.
for sneakyboy1,
RWD cars are king. There are some really nice FWD cars out there like the GTI but they are not even close to the drive experience of well-sorted north-south motors spinning the rear axle.
You can drive quattros much faster and with more confidence in “the real world” than those cars- that’s why I love Audi’s so much. But when it comes to that topic- I will always say RWD is king because it’s true.
Will the final tune run on 93? or 91 still? Maybe a 100 octane tune in the future? :o
It will adapt to both ;D I’ll be running 94 on mine eventually.
