Well there’s the age old race gas vs pump gas debate. While primetime is certainly the standout by a good margin, the facts are
-
He has just about every mod possible for the car, and has tried a couple versions of some mods
-
He goes to the strip like most people go to the movies or watch tv. He has probably been 10+ times in 2011. This means he knows what he’s doing and he’s not going to leave anything on the table. He’s not going with a full tank by accident…and he’s not going to accidentally deep stage. He gets everything out of the car. He’s good.

He runs race gas exclusively and has for a year now. This makes his times tough to compare to other guys on pump but there are lots of b8 guys on racegas now.
On pump there is a 12.27 guy, a 12.39 guy and a 12.48 guy. Only the 12.39 guy had a pulley. I think you’ll see someone on pump get deeper into the 12s.
On race gas there are a few guys who ran 12.3-12.5 but modlists vary.
Bottom line the fastest two b8 s4s on pump gas ran 12.27 and 12.39 and that’s awesome. The cars are seriously fast for a $60,000 4 door family sedan that struggles to tip the scales under 4000 pounds. Their torque curve is freakishly good. Its more of a straight line than a curve.
Still its neat to compare them to b7 rs4s which are supposedly ‘slow’ and the b8 guys love to cite the rs5’s 4.2 fsi (and the new rs4) as a ‘fail’. Hey guys…with a tune, exhaust, clutch and flywheel the rs4 is as fast or faster than every b8 on pump gas. Not only that but the rs4 and the b8 s4 both start at the same point in stock form (high 12s/low 13s) so the NA cars gains are similar to the SC cars. So I guess by the b8 forum’s own rationale, the b8 is a fail too…and the whole 3.0T engine is a fail. I say this sarcastically. Its excellent. I also say ‘the b8 forum’ as a generalisation…there are a few good apples who understand this stuff. When I showed this rs4 vs b8 on pump comparison to the b8 guys on audiworld last week they all flat ignored it. It conflicts with the attitude prevelant in that forum…that the v8 cars are un-moddable…so they don’t know how to address the facts, and ignore them.
The only fail is peoples’ inability to understand and appreciate performance from other platforms.
