Tiptronic Limit

Has anyone honestly found the limit of the B6/B7 Tiptronic Transmission?

The 6hp19 seems to have better programming and a better torque converter in comparison to the 5hp19. But has anyone caused one to fail/built one for either a supercharger build or a turbo build?

I searched an couldn’t find much at all.

Thanks!

There were a couple of supercharged guys who were making 400 whp and 350 wtq without any issues. There was also a nitrous car that had to be up around 375 whp/375 wtq, and again no trouble.

So the engine will let go first.

found limit of my “tired” 5hp19 on 4.2 allroad after sc install. So, the 6hp19 is most likely more robust.

Details? what happened to the 5hp19 with a supercharger?

Right now I have a B5 with a built 5hp19 and it seems to be fine. I ran 11’s in the car.

The thought process is could I get more out of a big turbo build or a supercharger build on a B6/B7 with a more reliable transmission even if I have to build the 6hp19.

Building the 5hp19 isn’t very popular in the B5 scene but I haven’t found anyone building a 6hp19 to hold more power than they have been able to create thus far.

JHM has a Tiptronic car that broke into the 12s but I’m looking for more of a 10s capable beast, while keeping the auto. (no manual swaps)

Our 6hp transmission will hold up enough to make 10s I spray enough NO2 though my car to scare most people from the idea saying your transmission will blow. The 6hp is a great transmission and is used in other cars BMW and Falcon in austraila that have gone 10s. So its possible. I have a JHM TCU tune so that just adds to the fun.

As for the 5hp and the 2.7t. Keep this in mind. The 2.7t clutches that held up to the abuse of big tq and hp from the 2.7 bigger ko4 and up turbos wont hold on the V8 cars. The Tq on the V8 cars comes in way sooner and will hold for most of the RPM range. That is a killer of the transmission. Its not suprising that a supercharged allroad lost a transmission with the JHM supercharger on it.

See I thought it would be the opposite. The bigger torque spike with the 2.7 would fry the clutches faster than the 4.2.

I know the BMW N54 guys have the 6hp19 as well. Seems to hold 400whp for them but once they go larger than oem turbos they give up.

Does the JHM tune change shift points or the torque limit? I’m assuming they increase line pressure

I always thought the same as well. When the JHM supercharger came out and JHM was testing it I remember them using the best B5 clutch at the time. The clutch that they used on there 10 second car. Even stage 1 supercharged I guess that clutch only held up for a few months. As you will see now a big trend is to use the RS4 clutch and flywheels on the B5. Well most b5 guys are probably trying to use some ebay clutch from a 1940 dodge becuase its cheap. LOL But anyway The constant Tq comming in from such a low RPM and holding through the rev range has been a big issue. Destroying what clutches would hold on the 2.7t stuff. Now from what I have seen from the 2.7t guys on here. They use the V8 clutches but they dont need to use as high of a stage as the V8 guys do to hold the power.

What year is your 6hp the B7 6hp has some changes to the clutches and a few internial parts that the older B6 used 6hp didnt have

Just to add welcome and

This was something I was very very worried about in the beggining. I made friends with several guys in austraila where they are big lovers of the 6hp and all the power it can make. The top guys many of them running on slicks and well into the 10s have guided me with actual first hand experience. I abuse my transmission and its held up fine. Im sure the TCU tune is helping but there are lots of options out there. I dont think you will need them if you do. I can dig up a few links. So far I and other supercharged and NOS cars have been fine

3/4 gear let go after s/c install and testing/tuning…implausible gear ratio codes. No tq converter codes though.

My original trans was behaving funny when I bought it, searching and lurching. So bad, that the car actually stalled a couple times when coming to a stop. Had it serviced after I got it. Shop said it seemed to be ok after dropping pan and performing the service, refill with zf fluid, gasket, filter, etc…nothing alarming as far as metal in pan or terrible fluid color. It did drive much better following the service. Likely first time it had been performed as far as I knew. Thought I was out of the woods and likely could have been ok in stock form. Shit happens I guess when pushing limits and modification though.

I guess the constant engagement of the clutch at low rpm with more torque would do more damage in the long run than more of a peak spike of torque later in the rpm range. Because after all no one’s always in that range, whereas more torque at lower rpm is something you’d deal with every shift and on more of a day by day basis.

The 5hp I have seems to have held up fine between 450-500ft lbs of torque.

Yeah I’m starting to see more and more I research the 6hp19s holding up… They’d probably be pretty sturdy with the tune and built.

My main goal with the post was to see if there were any horror stories of toasting them at a certain torque level.

No converter codes would mean the clutches just couldnt hold up. Sounds like the transmission had about all it could take from the motor stock. That is a common transmission failue when they put the V8 behind it add the supercharger and I dont see the 5hp holding up

yes think about the instant tq when a V8 car with a blower comes out of a shift. It will be instant peak tq and it will hold for the rest of the RPM. Turbo cars will allow the shift to take place and the tq will come in quickly but it will happen later in the RPM as the clutch has time to grab and clamp with the help of rototational force over RPM.

As for the 6hp. You will take out your motor before you will take out that transmission as long as you dont do something obviously incredibly stupid and blatent to destroy the transmission

It didnt. Ha! Allgood, allroad is a dream rowing through the gears now. I love it!

True looking at my last dyno I saw 350wtq on a dyno dynamics at 3500+ rpm

was that 11s run at a NHRA or IHRA track? If so post your results in the ‘Revolutionary Results’ thread in the 1/4 mile section. That’s an awesome result!

what supercharger do you have? How have a I missed this?

That with a 6 speed swap
