Used C6 S6 DD?

Hey Gents,

I need a new daily driver and I see myself inside a C6 S6. Its in my dreams now and I never even drove one. Love the engine, fit/finish, seats, subtlety… This would replace my 05 Acura RL which is becoming boring ::slight_smile: and approaching 200K miles (love the AWD tho). It will probably last for another 100K or so but I’ve had enough. I’ve already kicked it out of the garage to make room 8) lol.
Would $15-20K get me a strong S6 that I take to 200K miles over the next several years? I see alot available at the price point. I tend to hold on to cars for a while and I can do all of my own maintenance/repair to a certain extend. I am aware of the FSI issues and carbon build-up but what about everyday driving reliability outside of regular maintenance? I’ll probably budget to yank the engine to replace a few parts (since i have no lift yet) but overall how has your experience been with this car as a daily driver?

Yes minus gas mileage and it’s reliable just don’t skimp on maintenance it really makes or breaks the car. If you take care and ocd with sever maint you will be good!

Having just purchased mine last October, yes, you can find a good one in that price range. I dropped $17k on mine with 96k miles and a good thorough service history. Even with that (and no engine light of any kind) I pulled off the intake manifold for the carbon cleaning and found broken flappers, so I had to drop the $2k on a new I/M.

Outside of that one expense it’s been an excellent daily driver with no issues.

Yes I’d factor in 2-6k if all normal items haven’t been taken care of. More or less depending on what you find

I have my eye on a very good one, if I pass I will refer you!

I have been helping a few guys localy with maintantence and general work. So I have had some seat time in a few.

From a DD stand point its checks all the boxes for me Its big already has a nice suspension nice leg room nice looking nice sounding and the interior is still well done. The NA 5.2 is much like the Na 4.2. Its a great motor but you have to be very commited to knowing what your getting into and what is ahead of you. Most of these cars are comming from owners that we not hands on and might not have gotten the needed maintantence work done.

The S6 is a higher end car with out the price of higher end parts. The parts for the S6 cost about the same as most Audis from that year. The tech is very nice and very up to date still. Not too sure on what the older models have but the two S6 cars I have seen have blue tooth and its very nice.

Things like the intake manifold and carbon are things it sounds like you can do on your own. You dont have to get a new intake you can epoxy the runner flaps shut and never know the difference since the flaps dont open until past 5k

Gas mileage depending on your maintenance and your right foot. I see some guys here with sub 20mpg but I have been helping a few guys localy with maintantence and general work. So I have had some seat time in a few.

The last good thing is right now there is a lot of support from this community and with a company like JHM getting involved with stuff like intake spacers tunes and other stuff in the hopper its a good place to bemid 20s isnt too hard to get with some normal driving.

Good info. Im feeling better and better about it. Im relatively new to German cars having driven mostly Japanese cars my whole life… And a few American which ill probably never do again… o and a volvo S8 turbo… no more turbos for me either. I find NA’s better to work on or maybe im just old school. And I never buy “new” cars so I can let them develop some history for me to research. Never bought anything from a dealer either now that I think about it. Its so hard for me to trust those guys.
So I got a V10 M5 6speed about 2 years ago (first German car) and love her dearly. Its in a whole different unbelievable league compared to any sedan I’ve ever driven! Keeping that thing running tiptop is worth the time and money I spend imo because its a fantastic machine. BMW spared no expense on the design and that is what I appreciate so I pay close attention to every detail I can. Took me almost a year to find the right one and then I took a risk with a purchase sight unseen from the original owner and shipped it across the country. It paid off tho as we are now still going steady. Running costs of the M are about double compared to my RL tho. Tires are more than double lol and last half as long (cant rotate them). I’ve seen single digit gas mileage after some good runs and it never hurt so good ;D. The only real issue I’ve had with her is an alternator failure but the forum help me through that no problem. I saved like 2K by swapping that out myself. But I do get it… Sometimes you have to pay to play.

Could you help me out a little on the intake flap issue? I read about it but I’m still not very clear on the function of the flaps or the diy fix that doesn’t effect performance and doesn’t include getting a new manifold. Are there pictures somewhere I can view? I would be looking to improve the intake system as much as possible. It seems there is room for improvement from a engineering design pov.

vtgt if you pass let know. Can’t hurt to take a look. Im looking for black interior tho.

I had a e60 m5 before the prior s6 I owned. You will find yourself enjoying the s6 more minus the rowing the gears pet in about 90% of driving situations  maint is half and the v10 is more stout and higher tolerances then the e60. I also prefer the deepe tone on the 5.2 but the f1 sound from the m5 is nice. I’d own another e60 for sure but there is a reason I’m seeking out another s6/s8 first

Ill look for the intake posts and post a link here for you. This site is like the BMW site you were talking about. We are all here to help and the entire idea of the site is here to help with the right direction and sort out the BS and there was a lot of BS before many of the members on here started speaking up.

That is interesting vtgt. I was already assuming the 5.2 was more “drive-able” in real life with higher torque earlier and lower rpm limit. The 5.0 likes to live above 6.5K rpm which is great fun but cant happen as much as id like. I wish i could at least test drive a 6 but Id have to drive 4-5 hours to the closest one for sale. It was a little easier when I was buying my M. There just havent been any S6’s in my area at all. Im wondering whats your reasoning for going with the S6/8 over the M5?

Much appreciated justincredible! Always looking for any opportunity to cut the bs. I’m going to keep an eye out.

Yes tq hence why the s6 is faster in 90% of situations. You can burble around and from 0-45 not much really touches you and rip in throttle is great on hwy. the m5 is slow below 6.5 while the s6 is fast from 2-6k stock and well modded is a dif story  also range not just gas mileage but the tank in m5 is laughable at 18.5 especially when you get 4-8 mpg ;/). You hammer on an s6 you will still get like 11-13

Odds of finding one locally is slim. In the 18 months I’ve had my car, I have only seen 4 other S6’s on the road - 2 of them were C7 V8’s, 1 of them in Greece, and earlier this week I saw the first local S6 v10 I’ve ever seen besides my own. Sadly he was driving the other way so I didn’t get a chance to stop and chat. Anyways, I had mine shipped from TX to CA, I think that costed like $1200. Worth it for me to get the exact car I wanted when I wanted it.

The S6 is definitely a lot of fun cruising around town. It gets movin’ even when you’re piddling around at 2k rpm in 4th gear and gently tap the gas. Mash the gas pedal on the freeway and brace yourself as you approach felony speeds obscenely quickly. MY car rarely gets any attention on the road, but when I pass a car on the highway that usually changes!

Buy mine for 25k

Sounds like your having trouble selling? How many miles and what warranty remains if any?

This may be one to consider OP?

Yea vtgt the tank size and MPG is piss poor in the M5. My record so far is 4 fill-ups with 600+ miles of spirited driving in one day. But I must say it gets to 170 stupid fast. Above 100 mph theres not many cars that can keep up for the price. Has anyone removed the speed limiter on their S6? I dont like driving next to people.
Did you end up buying the one you were looking at vtgt?

patps6 why are you selling your s6? Do you have any pictures of it?

I think the JHM tune removes the top speed limiter. So you could push the S6 as far as you wanted to or as far and fast and the road would let you. I cant see it not being able to do the same top speed as a R8. I guess that would depend on if the w
888as something in the transmission that was also limiting you as well but JHM has a transmission tune for the S6 and s8

Honestly the s6 was a tad more stable at all speeds albeit a touch heavier due to awd etc. I felt safer and in a more solid build in the s6

I would get 99 mpg on a tank sometimes in the e60. Your correct on the e60 rs the only sedan that only mod being governor removal will hit just over 200 mph. I had gutted cats from headers back and eurocharged tune, at speed wth the smg nothing really touches the car unless it has over 600 hp. It sounds crazy but it is more fun to drive the s6 at 80 or below vs the e60 especially when you live in the city.

But all day Long s6 you can dd while e60 you cannot just based on fuel tank size I thought about adding an aux tank…don’t get me wrong I shouldn’t have sold that car ether it was mint 06 50k miles mint condition but after 35 days in the shop straight and me traveling 90% of time it made no sense truly a love hate relationship at that point…I see another one in black over red wth 6 speed in my future tho, ess supercharged required to gain some tq!!!

CN: I am working the deal if I pass I’ll PM you, e60 is great and I too would have owned both in tandem if my life was conducive for it about 2 years ago…will be back…you might say I’m a v10 whore as id be going on my third straight in less than 4 years  and based on where I am posting which car I cherish more overall
