Well heres a TD1 whopper...

Warranty denied for failure of thermostat and waterpump… both known issues for the 3.0TFSI

Just had a long talk with audi and they are working on it, more as it develops.

To say the least I am done with audi even if they do cover it because I shouldn’t have to take the time out of my day and be down a car while they figure out their ass backward warranty system.

Damn sorry to hear that - what tune do you have again? Is this one of those Magnus Magnusson situations? (lol I think I mean Magnuson-Moss)

running APR V2 stage 2+

Had a chat with audi canada rep and they actually agreed that it was somewhat ridiculous. He event went as far to tell the service advisor the same but he still has to go over his head. Service advisor is kind of mystified on this one as well.

I am overall not impressed with how audi is handling this. I am reasonable and don’t expect much from the warranty if it is related to a tune but when it is parts that have been known to have issues and have also had recalls issued for them one could expect that this sort of thing would be covered.

We shall see how this goes. Amazingly enough they did the work without me explicitly authorizing it if I had to pay for it. I told them from the get go that I was not interested in paying for these repairs since it is not something related to a tune.

I think audi is stretching a bit far on this. Apparently audi denied warranty for a waterpump on a 2.0T for a chip as well. I can see that case a bit more considering they haven’t recalled those but with the 3.0T it’s a different story on both parts.

I think it is annoying when people say this and I’m sure you won’t agree with me, but you have to pay to play. When my modified s4 had the serp belt go (bad tensioner) I went to audi fully expecting them to laugh at me… But they fixed it. They were well aware my car was modded (you should have heard the fucking thing lol). I considered myself lucky, and skipped out of there.

Bottom line is that a power train warranty item has failed… And you have willingly voided your power train warranty by tuning the car. It’s written in the warranty agreement

So getting mad at them doesn’t make sense. They’re a business trying to not get screwed by people who stick them with repairs caused by sloppy tuners. Not that yours is of course… But who knows.

You were looking for a new car anyway right? Well here’s your chance. Just know that if you buy a c63 or something and get a renntech tune and headers, Mercedes will laugh you out if the dealership when you complain that you’re losing compression on bank one. Just like audi.

Audi had been pretty reasonable about this stuff jn the past.
As for the recall that was for 2010 cars wasn’t it? Parts were updated after that.

I hope it works out, sounds like the dealer and audi rep is on your side. Are you looking at getting out of your car regardless?

So many aftermarket companies try to hide behind M&M by quoting it out of context that sadly people automatically think this. Modifications are not replacement parts and the manufacturer doesn’t have to prove it caused the issue.

It was a required service update released for the water pumps and thermostats. Not a recall and those are two very different things. To dumb it down for you a required service update is like your phone getting new software automatically whenever you turn it on and a recall is you returning your phone because it is covered in lead paint.

Either way you screwed the pooch with the tune while under warranty and got caught. Good luck, because you will need it.

I think they’ll warranty it, mostly because they have already done it without your consent. I believe they will charge you for investigation though, because you initialled three places on the consent form. Might be three hundred bucks or so.

Thanks jbones good to hear the view from the inside. MM wasn’t something I fully understand. Thanks for clarifying.

I didn’t realise they just went ahead and did the work. Now the dealership is on the hook lol.

Jbones and saki I both agree with you actually. Also in canada MM doesn’t apply so I am not even thinking about that.

Other thing is that I wasn’t hiding my tune or anything of that nature. I have had other things fixed and this certainly isn’t my first time at the rodeo when it comes to VAG products. Rear diff seals (which are leaking again) and mechatronics unit have both been fixed under warranty.

In this case however considering that they are both issues (although for both to fail at once is beyond me… i should have hit up mega millions as well this week) that have happened with quite a frequent occurrence tuned or not. The SA and the Customer “advocate” (i like how they use that term haha) both agree that it should be warranty.

Either way we shall see today what goes down and all has been pretty cordial and above board.

It’s interesting, when adolescents turn into teenagers/young adults, in the 14-16 range, they start fighting with their parents a lot. This is a psychological thing that prepares them for leaving ‘the nest’ (university, or moving out alone). They strain their relationshipw ith their parents, and it makes leaving easier for everyone.

Same thing happens at offices…people who have a job they are going to leave start to really ‘hate’ the place. They start complaining more. They ask bitchy questions at office meetings. They whine about the company a lot. All of this is that same psychological conditioning that we do to make it easier for us to break away. When you’re in management, companies will teach you to look out for this behavious from employees, especially high level employees whose departure could hurt the business.

I think that’s what KB is going through because he’s going to be sitting in an AMG soon…he’s getting extra mad at Audi to let him cross over easier

We should have a pool on your fix though. I say it gets covered.

Quite the analogy there.

Just to throw it in KB, Audi has been reversing people’s TD1s and reinstating the power train warranty for those who flash back to stock, you may already know this…

So yes, if you bring them a stock car, no matter the status of your car prior, they will do warranty work.

Assuming you are getting rid of it at some point, and want it to be warrantied, It probably would be a good idea to mention it now with the Audi Canada Rep, if you are getting rid of it in stock condition, so that you can be sure they will do it.

I’d guess they’ll cover it, they just wanted to make it a little difficult for you.

I LOL’d ;D

I do love this car and I would love to see it with a bigger blower but I don’t think I would hold on to it for the long haul. It also has a $13000 dec on it from an asshat in a dually playing with his backup camera and putting his oversized hitch into the front of the car (when it was a week old - dealership did all the repairs) so it for sure isn’t a keeper.

yeah I have been hearing that. I think for me I would be returning it at lease end unless someone wants to buy the car as is for the residual (who knows what market value will be when it’s up however)

Interesting bit of info is that the repairs are finished. They were done before audi denied warranty from what I can tell.

Tell them you are taking it to another dealer to get the work done. Will be funny to see their face.

Audi is the worst with this stuff

People are bringing their highly modified '11+ 5.0’s and their new gt500’s with a very obvious pulley, intake, exhauat and tune and Ford doesn’t have a problem honoring the warranty. Obviously those components directly modded are, but stuff that should still be covered is still covered.

I had a friend with a 6.0 GTO with intake, manifold, stall, nitrous, cam, and full exhaust and GM had no problems honoring any part of the warranty, within reason.

Audi is pushing away the enthusiast. A very small percentage of buyers are modifying their Audi and they are saying pound sand? If they want the enthusias following then they still have to honor a decent warranty. So same to them, you have to pay to play.

Agreed. Enthusiasts are often the ones who promote the brand, spreading their enthusiasm to family, friends, co-workers, and others. Pushing them away by denying warranty coverage on failed water pumps (which I got screwed on since Audi only gave free Audicare to '10+ models, not '09) is a bad idea. Obviously I would never expect Audi to cover transmission failure due to increased torque but common failures and TSBs should always be honored.

I try.

Not everybody has had their warranty reinstated. A few owners local to me have been told to pound sand because their car was modified and abused for too long.

At this point the techs have done the repairs so many times that they can probably do it in their sleep so that doesn’t surprise me. It is usually more up to the service adviser to bring up the TD1 or extended warranty (like CPO or part warranty extensions for the 2.0T FSIs) part of it. Now the dealership is in a tough spot because they have already done the work so I would expect them to try to push it through.

However I have seen/done it where a situation like this has come up before and no one wanted to pay for work/parts that was already done. We ended up giving the car back to the customer with the new parts taken off and a box of old parts for them to put back together. Just a ugly side of it but that can happen too - not likely but can happen.

One thing that I have not seen anybody mention in the conversation about expecting Audi to cover common failures and TSBs with TD1 is the fact that modifications can make certain repairs more difficult. The rear diff seals that theKB had replaced for example tend to be a pain to begin with and then when you slam the shit out of a car with coilovers it is even more time consuming to get the axle out. Or with the older B7 RS4s that replaced the DRC suspension with Stasis MS coilovers and then needed new front upper control arm bushings later on. It took longer for techs to get the struts out because of the canisters.

Just something that I thought I should mention.

wow…that’s aggressive.

customer must have been a dick about it

Wow… I hope that customer didn’t get a CSI evaluation. ;D

I just got another call from audi today saying they are escalating the situation and will get back to me in 2 business days. Now that would be all fine and dandy if I had a loaner but I still don’t. Car was dropped off on a sunday and the car has been ready for pickup since monday afternoon (the time when i was informed that the work had been done and audi wasn’t covering it).

Yep. That situation went to shit fast with the electronics of an A8. First it started out with the guy’s CPO coverage being confusing about what Audi warranty would cover until halfway through diagnosing the issue when they finally read the fine print and denied the coverage. Then we moved to the Fidelity plan coverage that made the guy pay to find the problem of a damaged fiber-optics cable because of a bad body shop repair. So Fidelity passed the buck to the guy’s insurance company and they told the guy to pound sand since the damage was from two years ago. Thus the guy then tried to get the body shop to pay for it and you can guess how that went. The entire time the guy was on the hook for the diagnosis and then the repair that would have torn his interior 3/4 apart.

I made sure of that! He still wrote a letter to AOA but they backed us since we were patient the entire time with the drama.

I would tell the dealer that I need a loaner if you really need one.
