What's On Your Wrist?

Yea skagen are pretty nice little watches. A buddy owns a couple of them and loves them . Look much nicer than they cost. Another one is Steinhart. A lot of nice looking watches at very reasonable prices.

Nice watch notarmed, pretty damn good pic too if that’s on a cell phone. Hope ya have a good vacation and safe travels.

81bear, that Tag Auto is almost the go to watch that everyone either wants to own, or does own haha. Tag really hit the nail on the head with that one. I just wish Tag, as a company, didn’t water down their line with the multitude of other variants and some cheaper options they put out there (just my opinion). But they’ve been very successful and I certainly wouldn’t mind owning that watch.

Meistah, I think the Omega Seamaster XL would work perfectly for ya then. My buddy had it, and I specifically asked him if it was the XL or the standard one. He told me it was not the XL version, thus I bought the seamster with the orange bezel. When it came it, it was evident his was the XL after all. Either he’s pretty clueless, of just didn’t want me having the same watch haha. Still a great looking watch, just a little smaller than I’d like.

Seiko Arctura Kinetic Perpetual

I initially bought it as a dress watch, but it became my daily lol (and it shows). Great watch otherwise. Never have to worry about adjusting the date number as it accounts for months and leap years.

For the guys with the nice automatics, how bad does the time go ‘off’ every week/month?

I’ve been wanting a nice automatic but if it goes off by a lot, it could bug me (lol I like accurate time).

I feel like I’m too young to wear a watch but I would wear one. Can’t wear one now because I’d always be taking it off for work. Otherwise I’m at home or school where it’s really not appropriate

I’m not sure if mine has that functionality. I typically just zero out elevation at the base and go.

Only quirk is that sometimes the screen gets unreadable once the temperature gets into the single digits F. I keep it under my outer layer skiing and it typically isnt an issue.

Took mine about 8 years to start losing time (not including when I didn’t wear it of course lol). Service intervals are approx. 4 years I believe so I was pushing it

Panera? Is the watch all my watch friends seem to be into. (As in my friends who are really into watches, which doesn’t include me. I mean into it as they have watch collections worth the same as my cars) . Only in the last five years I’ve started noticing that brand. What’s the deal?

Nothing on my wrist, although I love the engineering of ultra-thin mechanical watches.

One of my favorites (although too spendy for me):

Thanks Maddog!

I still love the watch just want something with a leather band! lol!

That’s cool that your watch adjusts automatically for days in the month and leap years. My Carrera doesn’t and I find myself checking the computer to make sure my date is accurate! lol!

I love automatics! For some reason the weight of the watch makes it feel more substantial and of higher quality and craftsmanship.

As for losing time I’ve never had that problem… My problem has been picking up time… usually 3-5 minutes after about 3 months. I’ve been told it’s because the gears have been magnetized. So don’t rest your watch on or near your ipad (with the magnetic screen protector) and if you wear a hip hoster for your phone move it to your right hip.

Every 4 to 5 years you need to get it services… not cheap… $500 the last time I brought it in but that was for a complete overhaul as my watch stopped working.

Yeah not sure… I know a number of watch enthusiast and they tend to drool over Panerai and IWC no idea why. If I had to choose I’d stick with IWC as it’s more my taste but I can’t justify the price point as any watch that look appealing to me is $30k+

Yea the Panerai watches are interesting. I think they’ve caught on due to their clean lines and highly finished look. But a lot of the watch enthusiasts really shit on them due to quality. I think they’ve got a cool look, very distinguished, but overpriced (most watches are obviously, but I mean overpriced to me for what I’d pay for one). If I’m not mistaken, they might be using out of house movements. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but again not a favorite of watch people. My B&R doesn’t use in house movements, which is kind of a bummer, but I like the look so much I don’t really care.

Last time I was in Chicago I saw a used one in a case so thought I’d ask about it thinking I could get it for a good deal. I was then informed it was a “limited edition” something or another, and was retailing for ~$35k haha. It looked 99% the same as every other one I’ve seen. Needless to say, my interest in it was nil after that.

Yea, they don’t really get off too much. I alternate every few days anyhow, and I don’t use a watch winder, so I’m resetting mine each time I change. But when I wear one watch for extended period it’s usually pretty accurate. In a month you may see it getting fast by ~2-4 min depending on a couple variables. Quartz will always be more accurate, but that’s not what nicely crafted watches are about at the end of the day. And if you’re buying quartz from a big name for big bucks, then they’re really bending you over for the profit margin. Again, nothing wrong with how they work, but I can only imagine the profit difference.

this is where I check out.

It’s like saying "my car is much slower and sounds worse and handles horribly, but it’s better than yours because it’s more complicated and was made in an old fashioned way that is worse but more expensive. "

Like people who pay a fortune for an ugly classic car. What’s the point? If it was a work of art, sure it’s appreciable but if the real trigger that makes someone think X is better than Y is the movement, I think that is just weird.

You drive a 996 turbo. All the Porsche purists were decrying that car because of the water cooled engine. It was a huge step forward from the 993 and previous generations but everyone shit their pants because it was new, and different to the old way. Well 15 years later, who gives a fuck about air cooled vs. water cooled? The only ones who cling to that are old guys who want it the way it was when they were in their prime. People with bushy grey sideburns basically. Today nobody else cares. It’s progress.

I really don’t get the whole watch thing

What I’m wearing at the moment, Oris TT1 Chrono, it came out about 10yrs ago. Oris makes some neat pieces, they also have a nice Motorsports line.

One of those rare times I’m with Saki. Not understanding here. Mind you it’s not part of my uniform either compared to my friends downtown. Every time I think about getting something really nice, I can’t pull the trigger. If I said “screw the kids and they can go to public school”, I guess I could get into the game. But… I can see a bunch of car guys getting together and appreciating each other’s rides, going out to the track or cruise or show or hang at the shop, whatever. Watch guys? What do you do…hang at Brassaii and compare movements? Makes me think of this…lol

Anyhoo, in general, don’t 90% of the movements come from ETA? I understood they had the Swiss watch industry on their knees because few of those big watch companies made in-house movements or parts anymore. The Swiss government had to step in when ETA said “we’re not going to supply you with parts anymore, only complete movements”. Something like that. That’s a big reason the industry turns me off. Something like if Porsche and Audi and BMW all used the same motors and tranny and parts in their cars and they were all made by VW (not far off analogy BTW, the movements are made by the Swatch group who saved ETA from bankruptcy).

That’s cool! Seiko FTW.

Lol if you don’t like classic cars then I can see not liking an automatic watch… That’s why I want a bulova precisionist! Moves like an automatic but has the accuracy of a quartz.

I don’t agree with the analogy because I’m not confused by the people who buy classic watches. I will occasionally search ebay for a nice old stainless steel SeaMaster. The thing that confuses me is buying these modern watches that are $3000-5000 (and more?) with the old fashioned mechanical movement. Those companies don’t evolve because that’s what people want…peopel want the old fashioned mechanical movement that doesn’t work as well. It’s weird to me.

If you want to continue your cars analogy, this would be tantamount to buying a new $150,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S, but not using the modern 550 hp powerplant, and instead favouring the 40hp engine from a late 1950s 356.

Sak… your looking at watches in one dimension, functionality (keeping accurate time). To me watches are more than their ability to keep time, they are a piece of art that should be appreciate for their beauty as well as their complexity… It also doesn’t hurt that they look damn sharp with an nice suit (Canali FTW)! lol!

Yes, I get that part of course. However when someone makes a point that ‘so and so is better it has mechanical movement’ it doesn’t make sense.

So bear, you’re basically saying you are wearing it as a $3000 bracelet?

I like the weight of an automatic as well (the Kinetic is essentially and Automatic Quartz). I like the heft/size - makes for a more solid feel.

As for watches, I just use it to keep the time. I don’t want it to look horrible, but I’d rather spend money on my hobbies. I’m a stickler for accuracy though. And too lazy to keep changing the days in the month, etc which is why I ended up with my watch.

Though as with anything, people do appreciate watches and collect them, and I think that’s awesome too.

Funny… When my watch stopped working I still wore the watch all week! So yes, expensive bracelet sums it up nicely! Lol!

Honestly, if you think about it who depends on a watch to tell time? If you asked someone for the time chances are they’d pullout their cell phone… Actually, wouldn’t a cell phones tell time better than any wrist watch?
