What's On Your Wrist?

They do look really cool. And you’re right we definitely don’t need them.

I think a watxh is like a car. A $100,000 car will do what no $20,000 car will do. Not even close. But a $300,000 car won’t be much better. At $100,000 you are already into the world of stupid speed and power that you can’t really use etci like a nice watch… and i dont necessarily want a cheap shit quality one…but I don’t get the point of spending many thousands.

To me it’s a bit like broads who spend 1200 dollars on a hand bag. You can get an excellent quality leather hand bag for $250 at roots or somewhere. But when you walk into LV (which is hideous) or Prada stuff you have left buying quality behind and are now paying for prestige.

I am not one to talk…I don’t think any of us are too practical…otherwise we would drive civics.

To each his own. Just saying I don’t get it.

Another thing to factor in with watches is investment. Some watches appreciate in value over time. So when your $100k car is only worth 60k a few years later. Your $5000 watch will still be a $5000 watch, or even more.

Saki, (and others) very valid point. And my statement was moreso meaning say an omega seamaster automatic vs an omega seamaster quartz. Not comparing a “high end” auto to a more affordable quartz. Thinking same watch just different movement and basically same price.

To me it’d be like if the new Ferrari came with two options. One being the crazy awesome engineered engine with awesome exhaust note that has a hand assembled and personally signed engine. And then the same body car with an generic electric motor made from China which was a outsource (so talking slightly better performance, but relatively the same, not true electric motor vs gas motor performance wise).

Then price the two of them virtually the same, even though Ferrari makes 10x more profit on the auto and is really just selling their name sake and the paint job.

To me I want to hear the exhaust note, be able to pop the hood and see the engine, and evoke some nostalgia. I know the electric is simpler and more reliable, but the gas guzzler is fun.

In that regard, that’s how I see quartz vs auto in the same watch. Part of me just eats up knowing the company ripped me off even more. And the other part just wants to see the classic movement, wind the screws, and hear it ticking away. Snob mentality I know haha.

It’s definitely a nostalgia trigger though. I’m a sucker for pocket watches and trains as well. So it’s all in that regard. Watches are absolutely obsolete and archaic as a time keeping device. So why not just have what is fun to you first and foremost. I’m also an engineer/building stuff nut. So I think anything in those regards is just cool as well.

That would be a good comparison (the Ferrari one) if the exciting hand made Ferrari engine was not very effective and the China engine was a better performer, broke down never and needed almost zero maintenance.

The mechanical movement watches are a little less efficient and less accurate and sometimes straight stop working. They also need a bunch of maintenance and care.

The end result of what these devices do is tell time. So if we are measuring performance and effectiveness it’s hard to vouch for mechanical movement unless you are just paying an homage to old ways. There’s merit to that in a way. Not thousands of dollars of merit, but there is merit.

With that being said they’re more complicated, more expensive, and worse. So I still don’t get it lol

There’s not much to get. . . most of our vices don’t make much sense anyhow. Adding thousands of dollars in performance parts to cars that already outperform most of the world, will never really be used to their limit, and when used to “the limit” there’s always a better option out there for a fraction the cost.

It’s all in fun though. I think it’s clear to say most of us here are very fortunate to even be able to talk about the cars, and other hobbies we enjoy.

Good summary…it’s a hobby, the timepieces look great, I agree with Bear too about the jewelry part.

But the last thing I need is something that needs maintenance. And what am I paying for? The Bell and Ross, the Omegas, the Breitlings, yes they look ducking fabulous, but they all have the same ETA movement. Just like if Ferrari, Porsche, whatever, all having that same fricking SMART car motor. Lol funny because the smart car was created by ETA too.

Anyway having said all that, I found myself yesterday looking again at vintage omega speedy pros. I left a few web pages open hoping my wife would notice. Sigh.

I do this sometimes on the ipad with car parts and she DEFINITELY notices but not in a good way… :’(

As long as you don’t leave it on pictures of lady parts you should be ok.

Funny… I was talking to her this week about picking up a S/C kit from ESS and she said I’m F**king crazy but a few months back we where looking at the Zenith el primero watch ($12k) and she was fine with me picking it up! I guess she gets the fascination about watches but has the “Sak mentality” when it comes to cars… :-\

The ESS kits are great, but I think you’ll find it a bit frustrating. I have a friend iwth one and he is already parting it out to go to something AWD . He’s looking at an E63 sedan (4matic).

He lives in Vancouver.

He said it was great, but with the moisture they get the car was unusable. We aren’t nearly as wet here, but we get the cold which means from November to March you’ll be in baby it mode trying not to go sideways.

Very true! but even with a S/C’er I don’t believe the M3 has as much torque as a stage 2+ B8 S4 (obviously it doesn’t have the quattro either). To be honest, I’m not sure why I’m even looking at S/C’er as I’m very happy with the way the car performance out of the box… We’ll see what happens, but I am very anxious to see what the V8 R8 does with the 1740 S/C! If it can do mid to low 10’s a used one may be in my future… ;D

supercharged V8 engines make loads of torque. APR is making nearly 490 wtq (on their dyno which reads a bit higher than most…so even 450 if you take that into account)

Does the BMW kit use a CFUGE? If so it will be less torque and more top end, but still more than a B8 S4 with a 1320 unless something’s horribly wrong. And as you mention only 2 wheels to harness it.

edit here’s a dyno I found. Pump gas

As for the 1740 it’s pretty awesome. I am not sure you will see much more than high 10s on street tires. Guess we will see. On street tires in the RS4 they were only able to get an 11.0 out of it even with race gas.

JHM will get deep into the 10s on full interior and street tires pretty easily once they upgrade fuelling and run 10 PSI. They aren’t even going to bother writing a race gas tune…just use the pump tune and add some octane. Their tuner leaves capacity in his files, so that works well. The V3 is massive. Can make around 700 whp. I think that’s what the BMW guys use too.

p.s. watch thread derailed.

I’ll stop now

It’s not a good thread over here unless at least half a page of it is completely derailed.

My favourite was the fish tank/RC vehicles chat in Arin’s supercharger preview thread

Well I feel pretty unclassy after going through this thread.

I just have two ~$100-$150 watches. A black department store one (Fossil) and a silver (Guess). Not worth any pics.

:-[

Haha, it’s rarely about the price and much more about what appeals to your interest. Some of the big expensive guys have copied hits from the everyday guys, just put their name and some bling to it to make a ridiculous markup.

Ya I’m part of the AR proletariat as well. Think I owned a watch one time, and it may have cost $50.

Selling watch time… 10 past 10

Yeah makes sense. I can appreciate a good mechanical watch, I just can’t see myself wearing one since I’d be too afraid to break it lol.

Might as well post them up I guess

Department store Fossil that I’ve been using as my daily driver since university.
Silver on black, just like the RS4. Only cleaner.
