Winter mods...

So with the winter here, I decided to start on the car… first thing is/was to pull off the TB and see what needs to be done to make a custom one… The intent is to provide more air for the blower to swallow and turn into boost… I think I can get an additional 10% boost with a better flowing intake and ported blower… Looks like the TB will be much more work than we thought, but still plan to attempt it… I will most likely buy a new one to destroy and try and figure out how to retrofit the electronics and mechanics for the butterfly vs making them…

The blower is fairly clean inside with a nice casting but there is still some good opportunity for porting and polishing IMO… Not like the old Cobra/Lighting blowers though… There is a decent sized lip that can be polished down for more flow… Not sure when will yank the blower, no hurry since I won’t drive the car until April…

Will be dropping the TB off this afternoon at the shop and hopefully have some CAD drawings on the new one shortly… I’ll keep this thread updated throughout the winter…

Impressive PT, I’ll be interested to see your findings.

primetime please see the advertising policy before making threads like this. This thread is now closed.

lol…that’s some tyrannical shit over on AZ. I used to get mad, but it makes me just laugh now.

Primetime, looking forward to seeing what you can do to eek some more efficiency out of an already extremely efficient blower. The performance vs. the size of that thing is incredible as is…I don’t imagine Eaton left too many stones unturned, but as always, there’s only one way to find out, and that is to blaze a trail. I’m a bit surprised companies like APR haven’t done this work though. This is the kind of stuff JHM usually does…all the ‘every little bit’ mods like intake spacers and the intake manifold on the b6/7 cars. APR seems to focus only on big bang for buck mods. Although the cooling system is a bit of a departure. Maybe they’re going to seriously attack the 3.0T from top to bottom.

If you go into the B6/7 section and ask about anyone but JHM you get laughed at/chased for two reasons…1. JHM stuff works and (most important) 2. buying JHM means you’re supporting development for the platform. Looks like APR is adopting that model for the B8 S4. Hopefully the B8 guys appreciate the fact that APR has developed like 7 parts for your cars while GIAC and REVO have done very simple tunes and that’s it. That tune revenue for APR means more development. Tune revenue for GIAC and REVO means development of tunes for other platforms.

whats the diameter on the TB?

Maddog, thanks… I’ll keep the thread updated…

Saki, LOL… Yeah someone would complain that they planned to make a TB in the future and I was potentially stealing their profits so the post would have been shut down on AZ! LOL…

All kidding aside yeah the car is pretty efficient but I think there is still opportunity… The TB will be tough as it’s pretty intricate… I’ll wait and see what my brother says… waiting on pricing for a new one… Not sure I can/will be able to order w/o electronics… sigh… I wish someone else was developing these types of parts, but since they aren’t we have to at least look at it and see what we can do… As long as APR tunes the car I’m good…

Beemercer, Was hoping you would chime in… the TB is 70MM… Need to figure out all the math but hoping to go to 77mm or 80mm… The blower inlet is actually a little bigger at about 73mm… don’t have a good set of calipers here so I could be off slightly… lol… easy 5-10mm’s of material could be taken off the blower… Thoughts on sizing?

Great ideas and innovations primetime maybe your best chance at free speech is here. Let’s some of the more open minded guys you know about the site here this way more innovations like this can ne made. I’ll happily support you and your ventures.

Know your not alone in all this we have several high level technical guys here and it might not be a bad idea to maybe toss a email over to the good folks at JHM maybe they cam help

good shit ron. ill be looking into this thread regularly. if u need a beta guinea pig, just let me know

thought it looked a bit small (the TB)… iirc the V8s are all about 83mm and do pretty well with them, wonder how similar they are otherwise (bolt pattern, electronics, etc)

Was that for the 4.2 from the B6/7 S4?

The one in the Q7 4.2 FSI (and likely the S5) is 82mm according to the study guide.

The B7 RS4 however is 90mm.

Wish we could find one of these for the B6/7 S4 too.

p.s. the B5 S4 throttle body was also 70mm

beat me to it. the rs4 was 90mm. same exact part including part number as the c6 z06 throttle body

all the low rev V8s have the same size iirc, along with the W8 as well. My TB is 3.25" or so, just about 82-83mm

really? that’s neat. That’s about where the similarities end lol. I lined up with one at the strip in November and it was COMICAL how hard he pulled. Bone stock and he was around 11.5 @ 120+ all day. I love the those cars. I couldn’t own one because it’s just flat unpractical, but I’m a big fan of the widebody vettes.

Great stuff PT, Will be interested in seeing how this goes.

The TB on the 3.0 is 70mm as well. Was going to ask you what the part number was as I have a spare one lying around but they look completely different, so that won’t help.

That’s it funny about the vette, I wonder how many other cars out there have the same TB’s. Would save the part supplier a lot of money.

Saki, those C6 Z06’s have a bit more power and are how much lighter than the RS4, if you weighed it down to RS4 levels it wouldn’t be so quick…oh and threw some carbon in the engine as well lol

lb for lb the Z06 would still rape an RS4 (if they were both 3900 lbs)

85 hp and more importantly 150 more tq…that’s just monstrous.

That’s not a bit, that is a lot. 150tq more is crazy

yeah the powerband with the LS7 is unmatched in my experience, such an amzingly fun car to drive

Thanks guys! So… which one of you guys with a v8 can take some quick pics of yours? I just want to see if the electronics and such are the same location/connection, etc. Thinking maybe I can just buy a bigger one that would work? 82 or 83 might be overkill as I could build the intake that big but the blower opening will only be stretching to get that big… I’ll call Stiegmeir when I am in the office Friday and see what their thoughts are based on other TVS ports… Off to the shop… later Ron

Few more pics as we popped the cover off… the gears don’t seem to be pre-loaded so that is a good thing… wemarked them to ensure they are lined up correctly just in case… brother actually had some things to take care of today so he will really dive into it Friday as he has to make a bunch of shift forks for all the mustang drag racers getting ready for the season… this will give him the time to figure out what to do…

Some notes, the inlet side is 70mm but the back side is actually tappered and as small as 67mm… we may actually try to enlarge this one but not sure yet… need to see how hard it will be to get all the gears off and the little electric motor that powers the butterfly…

Been searching on line for a larger siemens vdo TB with the same or similar layout… If anyone knows of one please point me in the right direction… again, if any of you v8 guys can get me some good pics I would sincerly appreciate it…

Holy shit Ron! Love the effort to advance the platform! One questions, when are you getting the R1900 to mock-up for the S4 ? lol!

Wow never seen inside a TB, cool.

Since the Z06 and a RS4 have the same TB, maybe there is another manufacture out there running a bigger version of your TB, could be worth looking at some of the stock supercharged V8’s on the market i.e. New Mustangs maybe a ZR1.

Also do you think Audi would use different TB on that motor between platforms, they could have used a larger TB on the Q7.

These were just hair brain ideas is was thinking of.
