2002 3.0 6MT Build

I was just bringing a logical concern to light. I’m not saying that every A4 guy needs an S4 and I understand fianancial issues and sentimental attachment to a car with work put into it.

When I had bad valve stem seals I had concerns about my motor and didn’t go out and buy a JHM supercharger kit to slap on it.

I know your car has been in the shop for issues, but you came to members for advice on your compression numbers and we told you that it should be re-tested correctly. From a friendly point of view that should have been #1 on your list of things to do because it doesn’t matter about maintenance and appearance if your motor needs rebuilt.

Its been in the shop since then, except for driving it to the body shop and back and that was when the clutch failed. But yea dude I’ve known to retest it like you and Joe said to but that still doesn’t stop me from fixing my clutch because I know how the car feels and I’m not that worried about it, maybe a little, and even if it did need a rebuild it would just give me an excuse to buy forged internals. It was really just how you came off. Its all cool though, I should have her back very soon with my compression results and new clutch kit. I really hope it is okay though because I really would like to spend money on other things…JHM said they would put HFC’s in their downpipes for me so that’s probably going to be my next mod, that or a tune. I think I’m close to finally having it back because I gave them all the parts on Monday so you would think they could complete like 4-5 hours of labor by the end of the week.

It’s been good. Getting ready to swap out all brakes/rotors and do a fluid flush in one of the upcoming weekends. Otherwise, it’s been business as usual with my car and tune. Just went over 160k on my way back home from Christmas travelling.

I’d love to do a full transmission rebuild with the kit from JHM and get a taller 6th gear, especially now with the tune giving it a little extra grunt. Can’t imagine the fuel economy one could get if you weren’t riding 3k rpm doing 75mph seeing as I’ve gotten 27mpg on highway driving doing mostly 70mph.

I finally picked her up a few days ago and I’ve been driving every chance I get. I’ll post up a review when I can on the clutch kit. All I can say for now is that its far surpassed my expectations and is incredibly smooth and the flywheel has made her much more responsive to get moving, acceleration comes much easier like the car doesn’t have to try half as hard as it did with the stock flywheel. I would Love to see how she would feel with a tune but I think I might be leaving her as is for now while I catch up on some monies other than the parts I have already bought.

Scored myself some USP’s today off local CL ad thanks to a local forum member posting up a deal… I can’t wait to see how these look, going to refinish them first or at least have them touched up. They have no center caps, tires are shot, and they have some curb scuffs, but I’m using them for winter and they were only 200$ so I couldn’t pass them up especially since I’ve been looking for these forever.

$200 for USPs - that’s a friggin’ steal! There was a guy round here selling them for $1000 with shitty tyres and all scuffed up. I guess he sold them as his ad is gone.

1000$ for used OEM wheels is ridiculous! You can buy BBS’s for that. Not long ago I was going to pay about 1200 or 1300$ or something like that for a full set of USP’s of 5 brand new off eBay never used, no tires… I’m kinda particular that I would likely refinish any set that I bought, thankfully this one was cheap and local. Problem is that I still need a 5th wheel and the only place I’ve seen a single wheel for sale is ebay and they are 170$ each

I dropped my wheels off to be refinished but I need to find a center cap…Which one would you guys suggest??? I have chrome window trim, I’ve never seen these caps with polished surround I wonder if it would look good and match the rest of my trim.

I think I read it properly that you now have the JHM clutch/flywheel/etc. installed right? Is there any noticeable chatter or vibration from the lighter flywheel? I’m at 161k now and still on the stock clutch as far as I know (has at least 115k on it) and I don’t know how much longer it will last. If it dies on me, I was thinking about the JHM kit as a replacement, but wanted feedback on the flywheel noise first.

My apologies, I have been so busy lately I completely forgot about doing a review.

JHM RS4 Clutch Kit Review
So far the clutch kit has worked without a hiccup. I have somewhere around 4-600 miles of break in I think. The pedal feel is actually a little tiny bit lighter than stock. Also would like to note I do have a new master and slave cylinder. Its incredibly smooth engaging. As far as the flywheel that is absolutely the best part IMO. There is no chatter but there is a very small vibration at low RPMS or if your in too high of a gear somewhere under like 2k i think, I would have to double check to know exactly. I run my RPMS low compared to most and I didn’t even notice it at first because its really so insignificant, That was one of my main concerns too with such a light flywheel. As far as performance goes and I don’t have a tune yet but I think its almost safe to say this is probably the best mod you could do for a 3.0. The Stock flywheel is so heavy compared to this one 14lbs is pretty big loss on rotational mass that the cars response is night and day. It feels so much lighter and accelerates with so much more ease. And paired with the RS4 clutch its really the best setup anyone could ever think of doing IMHO. I have yet to really see what it can do but I’ll play with it a little soon, but so far I am more than happy with it.

Great to hear the kit crosses over nicely to the 3.0.

That’s good news. The vibration in lower the lower RPM range isn’t really unexpected, but given the low gearing of the transmission, it shouldn’t be to big of an issue. Most of my driving is in the 2-3k RPM range, I’m guessing it is similar for others. I’d definitely be more inclined to go with it as a replacement option now than before. I just wouldn’t have wanted to risk more chatter and vibration when 90% of my driving is highway miles going to/from work.

Tune is on the way! Courtesy Zingo, thanks again. Will be headed to JHM to code, install and update tune after I get my USP wheels back and put some proper rubber on.

Just a few shots after a quick wash and little touch up on the motor. Still unsure about these black valve covers they do look a bit better now that I’m used to it but I really think wrinkle red would be better. I’m not too worried about it at the moment I am just focusing on getting the rest of these parts on. Next up is

-RNS-E and 05 antenna plus hopefully Auxilary plug
-Aero Wiper Kit
-JHM tune
-USP Wheels

Picked up my USP wheels from being refinished and new center caps today. After I polish them up tonight I’ll take them to VW tommorrow to mount a new set of Pirelli’s and get her ready to drive to Sac next week and hopefully squeeze in a visit with JHM for my tune.

Nice to see the car coming along and that someone has stuck with the 3.0! Make sure you snap some shots of your car at JHM for posterity.

The more I see USP wheels, the more I want them. They’re going to look great.

I like those wheels but around here You would see too many of them on every stock Audi they come on.

And the VW crowd has played them out here.

there is no such wheel that is ‘played out’. if someone thinks a wheel is played out, they need to re-examine their priorities in life.

If it looks great on your car, and you like it, put it on your car. Who gives a fuck if other people have it?

By that rationale, the hood on your car is played out, Halo. As are the doors and the roof. They are on every single B6 A4/S4 I see. Therefore they are played out. You need to get something different.

Lmao. X2. It’s like every time someone gets a car and posts it on a forum they are obligated to lower, chip, wheels with spacers, stretch the tires, etc etc.

I love the USP wheels, best oem wheel for a B6 IMO. You are definitely going in the right direction with all of your changes, the only thing I would suggestis to make sure all your suspension components are fresh. (although you might have covered that already).

LOL Saki, that was funny. Thanks guys I think they are going to look great too. As I type this I’m waiting on VW to pick up both sets of my tires from tire rack for the USP and my BBS wheels. Both Pirelli Pzero, all season for USP and blackwall Audi R01 for the BBS, Origonally I had the Rosso’s for BBS but I had to change to something to fit my finances better. I never really considered any of my factory additons to be a modification. I always thought of them as OEM upgrades and packages to be added that the car just didn’t come with when it was made. When I think of a modification I consider that to be something that is changed in a way that never came from the factory for that specific car… like my flywheel, tune, intake spacers, short shifter…
