Audi C6 S6 v10 Info Dump

Last weekend I was at my Buddies shop and he picked up a S6 v10 with a noise in the A/C system. Turned out the the compressor shaft and gear it goes into somehow started to round out, The gear is not available separately you need to buy the whole gear drive. This sounds like an isolated incident, I figured i’d post it up.

I have seen that problem with the B6/7 S4s, early MPI 4.2 C6 A6, and 4.2 FSI V8s in the Q7s/other cars. It also happens with the power steering pump too. Usually the AC compressor or power steering pump locks up solid and the gear drive unit keeps turning with the engine so the hard metal shaft that drives either accessory rounds out the drive gear of the gear drive unit. It sucks big time but you can replace the gear drive unit with the engine in the car on the B6/7 S4s. Sadly the V10 C6 S6/D3 S8 just have no room to get access to that portion of the engine. Very rare problem but it is usually really noisy and obvious when it does happen.

Hey Everyone,

It’s been nine months since I parted ways with my 2010 S6, but I finally was able to pull together a PDF file of the repair history. Hopefully this will be helpful.

Here is a link to the PDF on Google Drive; please note that it reads bottom-up so you have to scroll down and read backward for the progression of my dealer’s saga of working with Audi tech line to resolve the V10 issues. There are a couple of other repairs mixed in with the engine issues, but you’ll get the idea.

Also, what isn’t shown here is that the dealer had my S6 from mid-November 2014 until late January 2015 on the last visit. I traded it in for a Q7 shortly after I got it back.

Enjoy the read…

For what it’s worth…Germain Audi in Ann Arbor was great to work with throughout the entire ordeal with my S6. I was pretty patient with everything, understanding that they needed to work closely with corporate to ensure that they got paid for the work. I had all of my Audis serviced by them and they always took good care of me.

I think Google removed the article. I can’t access it.

Sorry about that. I’ll try to create image files of each page and post it that way. Then I can omit the trivial service items and sequence it in a more logical order.

Let’s try this…here are images of the repair records, in sequential order.

One lesson learned as I went through these and recall paying out of pocket for things like a carbon clean and new spark plugs, is if I had played along with the dealer and let Audi Tech Line direct the work I probably would have ended up getting those things done for free under warranty. As it is, the dealer still did thousands in repairs courtesy of the warranty and some goodwill at the end.

Another bit of advice is to be nice, yet persistent. If you look at the May 2014 repair order, I reported a shudder under moderate acceleration at about 40 mph. The repair tech drove it and didn’t see an issue. I continued to notice the shudder, so I persisted when I brought it back again. The service advisor rode with me and felt it. Then the service manager drove it and noticed it as well. That turned out to be the thing that got all 10 fuel injectors replaced, after they had replaced coils, the intake manifold, and other bits but it still had a problem. The engine wasn’t throwing codes at that point, but I was always pleasant with the service crew and still persisted about the shudder. That’s the point where, legally, they probably could have just sent me packing…but because Paul, the service manager, is a great guy and noticed it himself, they in turn persisted with Audi corporate and got the work covered - after Audi had already paid out thousands to work on it, and the car was not throwing codes.

It’s been quiet in here. Any one else have more to add? I guess CV is including some info which could be stickied Into here as well?

Do you know where I can find the service schedule (what needs to be serviced and when/how often) for the C6 S6? Thanks

Welcome frosty. I assume when you talk service your talking things like filters, coolant, front and rear diff fluid stuff like that.

Yep

Here is the generic version for 2008. Based on what we know here I would add a few items to check depending on mileage like carbon clean, inspect IM, etc.

Thanks a bunch

Here you go a little more in depth

A few more questions are these motors known for burning oil? Other than the carbon build-up are there any other issues with the drivetrain? Is it safe to assume that @ 50-80,000mi anything that would have failed or been recalled would have been addressed already? I’m watching the market for these very carefully. Thanks.

That’s a loaded question. My car burned little if any oil at 55k, it burned some, but maybe 0.5 quarts between oil changes?

Read through the thread carefully. Many people think if the car has gone 70-90k with no major issues it should be o.k., but that’s not really a scientific answer.

From a pure powers rain standpoint this cars are fairly stout for what they are IMO. It’s not accord but it’s not a Ferrari. Think of a higher maint Audi but not as bad as say a BMW or Maserati.

You can pull a recall l off your vin which I recommend.

This maybe be my first post…

I’ve read and heard from several sources that the stock intake is quite restrictive and prone to heatsoak…
made me think of possible going with an http://alphaperformance.com/alpha-audi-r8-v10-billet-intake-manifold-a-cad-sneak-peak/. Integration would be a pain, but im sure the TB motors can be “reused” to actuate the ITB’s.

Also there is someone that builds long tube headers but as you’ve all guessed it requires the removal of the engine/trans assembly. I will have to track that link down as i seen it on some other forum…

Found it…
Thread is on AW

The thread for that picture is on and started on this site.

If you want to know more about the guy who builds them and some of the V10 stuff he is part of check the first post and look at each link

Here is a link to that actual header build thread that is on here
