Well, my car didn’t run very well at all. 60’ was improved, and the LC felt pretty good. But it was all moot because my car was pulling 9 deg of timing due to knock. I’ve taken some logs and now will try to figure out what the problem is.
I only got one pass, Milan was an absolute disaster with a timing system that was having problems (no times displayed on the boards the whole time), nearly completely full staging lines for the full drag prepped cars (who all take about 5 minutes to stage and sometimes only run 1 at a time), around 40 street cars (many cool, but you can’t see anyone run while in line). All in all a waste of time. Decided to leave and watch the hockey game.
What are your times prior to these in same conditions drop? Do you have a CPS? I ran 12.3’s in 800-900 DA’s on V2 tune with no CPS a few weeks ago and obviously without the update and tcu tune. I looked at logs just to learn don’t have very much experience with these but could see what you’re talking about with timing pull. Hopefully next time out the car will run better for you. I took a sprint out in Mexico this morning and car made it to 50+ no problem going uphill but didn’t hook up the Vbox for times. I was getting myself some taquitos for a late night snack but then again the DAs were in the negatives. Also, if I may add, tried 5k launch just for kicks and car spun but short shifted around 62K so I let off throttle. Still to get to track but regardless can’t log no VCDS but if I make ANY DAY SOON smh. I’ll see if I can borrow one from someone until I purchase my own, cheers.
The time wasn’t horrible but not great at all. I went about a month ago and ran similar times. My best time last fall was 12.45@110, but the car wasn’t running well then either. It’s likely if I ran a few more passes late into the night might have picked up maybe .1 et and 2 mph trap, based on the usual variance I see in the slips over the course of an evening at the strip.
But I’m more concerned about the timing pull, which is pretty clear evidence the car isn’t running right.
I know this sounds redunted but what kind of fuel did you use and was it from reputable station. Whenever I use Shell VPower car runs so much better. I can throw Mobil or Sunoco in the tank and the car will run ok but not as sharp as when Shell is in the tank. This works for me as far as I know & feel from how the car reacts. I’m sure with the brain trust on here they’ll get to the bottom of whatever the issue might be and it could be something very simple. I would look over all the obvious things first. The DA is a factor too 1500 is not that good in my book and how was the humidity, Ba? It all has to jive if pressure is low and humidity is high car will run like shit. By low I’m mean under 30’s and humidity above 70’s… The lunar sun galaxy alignment factor has to be in order sometimes ;D
It was shell v-power. I only fill with shell or costco 93. My IAT’s were bad on the pass, but the hwy pulls had good IAT’s and still showed all the timing pull.
yeah, Milan is annoying. No two ways about it. The layout with the staging lanes being 90 degrees to the track, and behind a bunch of trees and bushes and shit means you can’t see jack shit while waiting in line
the big tire cars are a fucking nightmare. I hate them.
Would be great if they’d run ‘street car night’ or something instead.
I tend to go to the strip in the early spring or late fall when the big tire cars don’t bother due to the cold. It’s great and we usually get 10-20 passes.
Ever go to the other michigan tracks like ubly or lapeer or something?
Yea I’m definitely not going there again this time of year. Especially when the weather is nice like it was yesterday. The other times I went weren’t 1/10 as bad as that, aside from the occasional drag car that dumps oil everywhere (which is a disaster and takes forever). I’ll probably wait to go till the fall, hopefully by then the car is sorted and I can put down a good pass 8)
The worst part about it is the track workers seem to just lollygag around and take forever to do shit, and not communicate what the problems are. The only reprise is it costs $25 to do this, so the real price is wasted time.
Funny anecdote was the timing boards weren’t posting, and the car I ran against was a previous gen mustang with a full body kit and seemingly no exhaust (could hear that thing from a mile away). A group of spectators thought my car was some kind of super car given how slow the mustang was (other car on timeslip) and they couldn’t see the times on the board. They didn’t know anything about drag racing of course, or they would have known how slow the mustang was.
Lapeer would be more reasonable if I lived in the north suburbs…can’t really beat a 20 minute door to door drive to milan. Guess I’ll just wait till the temps drop.
yeah by fall, their sportsman series etc. are all wrapped up so they’re not testing or tuning jack shit. You’ll get a couple of them out for fun but that’s it.
in spring, theyre all getting ready for the season. It’s like a league for them.
Hmm, assuming this was on 93 and you didn’t add race gas on that pass. At that DA and temp + probably waiting quite a bit in the staging lanes, its not a bad time. Not really sure why your car is pulling timing… Thinking heat soak is a non issue now, which makes me question the fuel… I have my own personal doubts about costco gas, some say its all the same but I know for the x5m at least, a few guys on the forum found the car doesnt run well with that gas leading to injector issues… Doubtful the residual costco fuel in the tank is causing it though… Did the revo car come out with you?
Waiting until fall will be a good call, I can join you then as well. Like saki said, those annoying drag cars will be gone and we can hot lap. Hopefully you can switch to race maps by then as well and the real fun can begin People there really are amazed by how well these 4 door sedans run, I got the same reactions last time I went out.
APR has recommend running NGK-BKR8EIX at a modified gap of .024. Any reason not to run these compared to OEM plugs? I realize these are iridium 8’s, but Jeff - you are probably running more aggressive timing on the race gas with the meth…and consequently higher loads? I’m not really planning on switching from the 93 file. I daily my car very sedately but am running the car hard at the track.
Yes, got in touch with both Eric and Arin. They want some logs with better fuel, which is going to be the first guess as to the problem. I’ll probably change the plugs anyways, since I’m at 30k miles and have been stage 2 for about 10k miles. Will hopefully give an idea of how cylinder temps look.
There are a few other items to try out, but most are more involved. Guess I’ll start checking them off one at a time. I’ll make a new thread so the info isn’t scattered throughout this section lol
I am going to guess fuel has something to do with it. The fact you are seeing quite a bit across all cylinders makes me think it’s not just the plugs/coils. That is quite a bit of timing being pulled with pretty good IAT’s. I don’t typically see any timing pulled below 50C IAT’s now, and don’t see anything too excessive until I hit something like 70C-80C IAT’s.
I went through some of the same things, and found that my issues were with fuel and temps even after initially thinking I had ruled those out. Good quality gas, and the coolant system made a big difference for me. Since you are just running the 93 map, maybe try mixing in 3-4 gallons of E85 or MS109 to see what that does. Since you are not running a race gas map, how well it’s mixed in shouldn’t be a big issue.
I’d probably do the plugs regardless. It won’t hurt to get a fresh set in, and it also gives you a chance to make sure they are all gapped correctly, etc.
Drop stay away from the Costco gas. I used BJ’s 93 on an Infiniti G37 I had before the S4 and it ran like crap never used it again. I switched back to the main brands and car ran excellent again but it took a couple of tanks to get rid of whatever was in that fuel. Please try and be consistent with a good brand and you’ll see a better difference. Log after doing this as the guys are saying and let’s see what it’ll do for you. Just my .02
My bet is APR made the timing more aggressive in the B8.5 revision (in fact they’ve already said as much), and that’s why you are seeing more correction from the overshoot. Your actual ignition angle is still breaking into the 20s so that looks pretty normal to me.
