Dragstrip v. Road Course

It’s not a popularity thing. It’s a back and forth thing. Some people are more worried about winning a conversation then participating and learning. So you end up winning a conversation and loosing credibility in the presses. The reality is people that are more concerned with wining actually loose as they didn’t learn anything. They just defended there comfort zone.

It’s not about popularity it’s never been about that.

Fact finding…the irony.

West, please just shut the fuck up!

It’s a metric bullying system. Going back to post 1 of this thread, I’d have to accept Saki’s assertion that I’m the worst beginner at 1/4 mile or he’ll torpedo my account if I challenge his status. It’s not very social. That’s why there isn’t a dislike button on Facebook.

You are starting to sound like skywagon. This isn’t AZ, people understand you contribute. Just cut the whole victim thing and realize that you being bad at something doesn’t mean everyone else is taking PED’s to get their times.

To be honest I thought your first post was fair. I think the sticking point is most people see 99octane as much better then pump. I think it started to go south when you made a comment about how you were going to whoop some ass when you get your mustang and then it kinda degraded into Audis aren’t for drag racing.

I think it’s a strong combination of newbie ittus at the track. Drag racing is much like any racing where you need to prep the car. If the car was super hot you didn’t have time to check the tire pressure and your not used to launching the car your in for a rough night. I think in part most of the guys seem sold on the driving aspect due to just how good of a driver you need to be to handle the 6 speed cars down the track. The manual cars are fun but you can see by the 1/4 mile list that the majority of the 11 second cars are the DSG cars. So the reality is the manual cars are already very difficult to get the most out of and your first time at the track was a learning experience.

I have no way of knowing exactly how you drove. But comfortably I would say if that was your first time at the track and if your not used to banging gears. There might be alot of truth to the he shifting theory. Gas wise 99 in California is atleast as good as east cost 93.

This is a very fair assessment. I’m going dark on this topic until I pickup gas and schedule a date. Also going to get a tune up in March when the car turns 5. Then 1/4 mile practice.

don’t worry about gas. Learn to accelerate. Much more important.

When my clutch was sticking, I was losing 0.5-0.8 seconds per run (3 shifts). Regardless of whether the shifts are slow due to lack of practice or some mechanical issue, the fact remains that slow shifts in a manual will have a huge negative impact on ETs. Plain and simple.

West uploaded a pass at the drag strip a while ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfUSHeSTkug

Could that video be any less informative? What the fuck is the point of even posting it?

Not sure if you’re referring to me or to west.

But if it’s to me, that’s from the one time he went to strip. What time he ran…who knows…but I presume it was his best pass. As for why, it shows him shifting, since that was what everyone was giving him a hard time about. Not sure how this can possibly be considered off topic unless you’d just prefer to continue on the west bash train.

that’s a bit strong…I don’t think anyone here was bitching. We were addressing the elephant in the room with respect to his driving.

If anyone was bitching, it was west about fuel/tires/everything under the sun

Fair enough, wrong choice of words.

bitch ;D

edit: just watched that video

fucked up staging badly (drove past the staging beams, then reversed and barely tripped them, basically staging as shallow as you can)
badly bogged the launch and slipped the car into gear on the launch
slipped it badly into second gear and took a dog’s age (7 years for those following at home) to make the gear change itself
same on third
same on fourth

At west dude.

I meant why would he post that video with no time or anything at all? Completely useless.

lol ok, I’ll step out of this thread for a while, just failing left/right :-\

god damnit d rob!

I would love to have an instructor in the right seat. That’s what us road course snobs do. We make n00bs carry around a 150 pound risk management device. My feelings are teflon coated so even if you were ugly in the thread I don’t mind if you come out to the strip to show me the ropes. People are cordial IRL.

I obviously didn’t take the video as I was driving. I think I just wanted to hear the exhaust? I forgot that I posted it. YouTube has thousands of years of useless video. It’s on the Internet so I can retrieve it in 50 years. That clip was probably lost 2 computers ago.

???

West,
If you wanna meet up at sears point/sonoma raceway, let me know. I used to race years ago. i can show you how to stage and give you some baseline info for launching/staging. launching a RWD car, which i used to have, is a bit more tricky than AWD cars, but I can go and make some suggestions, or just talk to you over the phone, no biggie. some of my customers represent division 7 for regional/national events and I can always ask them for help as well.
I would avoid Sac raceway. If you want answers as to why, talk to local super gas people and they will explain it. I’ll just get yelled at on this forum about it. but I’ve raced there, and my Div. 7 customers have too, and there are legit reasons why I write this.
Gasoline: California pump gas will stratify if sitting in a tank for 60+days. Some race fuels are still compliant for over the road use, meaning the fuel is compromised for emission compliance. True race fuel is “offroad use only” not terribly enforceable, but that gas pump at sonoma/sears point has emission compliant high octane fuel, not true race fuel.
I used to think the gravity of the fuel made the power, but that’s incorrect, most gasoline race fuels are lighter than pump gas.
West, whatever you do, just be consistent about it. run a gas that you can regularly run, and use it. focus on weather conditions and driving and go to a test and tune day and practice, practice, practice! some people go to the track and just want the fast time. but the consistent driver and vehicle will continue to compete for running their number. Find a consistent launch rpm and stick with it. as the evening grows cooler at sonoma, pay attention to the wind at BOTH ends of the track, and the air temp and moisture. and at sonoma, you have the option of the gear jammer class, so if you are a manual trans, those designated lanes negate the advantage that an automatic has. If not, you are racin’ street or sport street. PM me if you wanna talk.
