Englishtown tomorrow, who's in?

If it makes you feel better my 3rd gear synchro isn’t in the best shape

Audi 3rd gear synchros always suck. Funny how they don’t change it. They usually wear out outside of Audi new car warranty.

1st and second are very robust. 3-4-5-6 are all tiny. Which gear do you use the most out of those? 3rd. Sure enough we all wear out the 3rd gear synchro.

JHM made some super duper synchros for the B5 S4 guys, and I think they’re working on them for the B7 RS4. I imagine they’ll get on it for the B8 S4 in a year or two, once the B8 guys start wearing them all out.

In Audis defense, I learned how to drive stock on this car. Not that my horribly rough shifts wold wear it but my super duper 2-3 sure did it. Happy to say I now take it easier, well I sorta have to if I want to get into gear.

Saki is right that the third gear synchros sucks. Mine was toast when we took it apart to install the TDI 6th gear set and it felt fine before. Also the gear was damaged too.

So…if my shift pattern is 1-2-4-6 more than 50% of the time, does that mean I won’t run into this issue? I love how the high torque and it’s curve make all the gears viable at almost any speed.

99% sure mine wore prematurely becuase I’d miss 3rd too often while racing. I’m sure if you drove normally it wouldn’t be a concern.

Why would you skip third while racing?

I think he was saying that he would miss the shift, not skip it. Unless you’re referring to me, in which case, I use third when racing.

Skidrowe’s got it. It was in reference to his post. I meant that IMO that main and likely only reason I have the issue is from very aggressive shifts into 3rd leading me to occasionally miss (grind). What I was saying is that if he drives regularly it shouldn’t be a concern. I’ll send out a email to JHM.

Grinding usually means you are not depressing the clutch all the way through engagement, or trying to jam it in at peak redline under high G’s.

I’ll dbl check when I get the car back but if I remember right it’ll grind on a fast shift regardless of how long i hold the clutch in. JHM doesn’t have anything in the works for our synchros yet if anyone was curious.

To clarify my comment, It’s not a matter of duration but a matter of being fully depressed to the floor thru the throw.

Yea, I’m pretty sure when I was telling by buddy I demonstrated by fully pressing down the clutch and slamming into 3rd and then depressing. Took prob 2 seconds

Yes, third gear synchros are shit… When I bought my S4 it had already been slightly abused, and then I just made it worse lol… if I wait just a split second, it goes in everytime, but of course I lose about a 1-2/10ths in the process… one day, hopefully soon, I will simply drop the trans and rebuild it.
Hopefully by then there will be an updated parts to go in there…

Well, I hope I you get it fixed before the end of the winter months  sux to hear, either way…and good to know im not the only one lol. Now if I just had 15 to log my damn boost… wtf is 3 to 5 psi gunna do at the track lmao

If you pause on a shift for one or two tenths, you don’t lose the time you paused off your quarter mile et. You’re still moving. So you lose mph but your et is not heavily effected by slow shifting vs fast.

Next time you guys go to the strip, even Dsg guys, when you get about 125 feet from the finish line just pop it in neutral and coast the rest of the way. Your et will barely change but you’ll lose a few mph. I reckon someone running 12.5 @ 112 doing this experiment would run 12.9 @ 107

And that’s coasting for probably 2-3 seconds.

Everyone wants to put all the weight on the importance of shifting fast whether it’s dreaming of nailing powershifts in a manual car, or paying for a Dsg tune for the auto guys to speed up the shifts. It’s a nominal difference. It’s no game changer.

Yea, I agree. It does suck though because you know the car is that much faster. If I ever get an in car video up you can hear 3rd grind as I shift into it slower than the others.

If anyone was wondering, the shop my car went to for the 104 tune couldn’t complete the flash. Ended up having to send out the ecu to APR and have them do it. And since anything that can go wrong will APR forgot the 104tune so it had to be reflashed anyway. So what should have been 30-60 minutes took like 4 days due to the weekend. I didn’t post up becuase I was nervous that the ecu may have been bricked.

Im going from my personal experiences with this specific model, I would lose at least 2/10th, unless I nailed it. That was most likely due to the fact that it wouldnt even go into 3rd until 2 or 3rd try…

Furthermore, last winter, when I ran back to back 12.0x@115-117mph, I wasnt speed shifting at all, especially into 3rd… so you are probably right. Although I hate to admit it haha!
