Not bad given the DA… Solid 11.8x car in those conditions… Seems like his APR LC is working well with the tune… Still find it funny how bad I can out launch LC… Dude has super light 18 inch wheels as well… Can’t tell given how loud the truck is but it doesn’t sound like AMAX is enabled? Good to see some more of their customers hitting the strip…
He is local to me. I’ve logged his car, and been in pretty regular contact with him. He ran a 12.08 @114.8 on his APR tune (using race gas map with E85/93 mix). That was with his heavier stock wheels, no DSG tune, and similar DA (little lower).
Don’t know about AMAX, but he was launching at 4500 RPM’s which in theory should trigger AMAX. He said he had no shift hang-ups with the APR DSG/EPL ECU tune combo where he did almost every time when he had the the APR DSG/ECU tune. He doesn’t have an exhaust, so it’s a little hard to hear anything from his car.
Has anyone else noticed this? Problem is you’d have to be APR tuned then leave APR to go to another tuner, right? I was under the impression they wouldn’t sell a TCU tune without an ECU tune.
it’s frankly incredible that these tuners engage in tied selling. In most industries that’s illegal. Pretty funny.
I would say they’d sell more of their respective options with more flexibility IF they were confident in their abilities. But if you realise you’re not that great, you have to restrict the hell out of everything to force people to buy your full shelf.
GIAC for example has had the fastest ECU tuned cars since about 2013 (and if not fastest, they’ve been barely pipped) and their TCU program has worked nicely most of the way since then as well. I think it would be good for them to open up the TCU programming to APR tuned customers. it’s not like they’re going to lose tuning business to APR for that reason. It just opens up the hundreds if not thousands of APR tuned cars that don’t yet have a TCU (or the ones that do, but want a working TCU!)
In regards to the most recent 1/4 mile time surfacing with full E85, i’ll reserve judgement after BETA testing, I ran times not too far off with my GIAC stage 2 in slightly worse DA with a 93+e85 mix
Dude went back and put up another very solid time, he’s running the JHM pulley now as well… His 1/8th put’s him in the 11.6x range… If he’s really bypassing that much boost than this car will be very very fast once EPL works that out assuming they do… Looking forward to seeing more from this car…
He’s definitely bypassing that much (20-30% in the logs I saw, and it progressively climbs from 5500 RPM on), and as we discussed, his timing isn’t crazy high (25 degrees). I know he’s actively working with Tony (they were talking while he was at the track yesterday), so it will be interesting to see what they can do.
The big hold up for him is his car gets hot without a coolant system. He hit almost 80C on back-to-back passes in what was pretty good conditions yesterday, and it’ll be more of an issue as it gets warmer. Our 1/4-mile track doesn’t open until March, so it gives him some time to sort things out. I think his plan is to add the coolant system before then, and possibly JHM LW rotors. It’s stupid that the 1/4-mile track is closed when we’ve had maybe 10 days below 50 degrees this winter (maybe one day in the 30’s…).
That may be part of it, but you can see that the specified pressure is lower than the actual when it starts to bypass. It is also very linear related to increasing (actual) pressure to the point it looks like the specified value is just too low. Even when his IAT’s maxed out in the 45C range (which should be very safe), it did the same thing. With that said, there is more to it than just jacking up the specified values, so it’ll be interesting to see where they go with it.
I figured I’d pop in over here and say hi. I read quite a bit here and appreciate the knowledgeable folks that participate here. Tony and I are working on this today. Lots of fun. Thanks to everyone that has given me the balls to try this.
Welcome to AR! Car is moving out very nicely… Looking forward to seeing full 1/4 results… Does it bleed boost in all gears and all rpm’s or just upper gears and R’s? Hopefully, EPL can correct that for you as it will probably impact you more on the back half of the track… I think it’s awesome Tony is working with you and making changes, and good for you taking the car to the track and getting real world results as that’s what it’s about.
I noticed you mentioned not using LC, does the car launch better with or w/o? Your definitely getting AMAX shifting in your latest video… Will be curious if EPL comes out with a DSG tune as to how it performs because your cars tranny is working very well, I can only hope mine will as well…
Gotcha. Yeah, with just one pulley he was not bypassing at all.
Ron, I think he normally uses LC, but track prep was so shitty, he was getting better results without yesterday. They had a two-day no prep event the previous days (for the likes of the Street Outlaw guys). I don’t know for sure, but just looking at the slips he sent me, he seems to be hitting around 1.67 60’ both with and without LC.
So this is the modlist + JHM over-drive pulley? Also I didn’t think guys could buy the APR TCU tune on its own without tuning. Did he convert over to EPL after having APR?
It should also be noted that his dragstrip is not a certified track (not based on what I could see on the website) so it’s tough to say

Yes, he changed over to EPL so he could run E85 now. I mentioned this before, but he had APR ECU and DSG tunes for a while. I think he did around a 12 flat with the full APR setup on the race gas map, but running a 93/E85 mix. No dual pulley at the time obviously, and I think stock wheels. That was on our NHRA 1/4-mile track. You should see some 1/4-mile times at NHRA tracks in the coming months. We just don’t have many options here…
I don’t think Texas Raceway is NHRA certified, but it’s known as a relatively slow track locally. Not that that means anything.
The fueling upgrade is only $400 if you buy the Autotech pump upgrade like andthen did. E85 is less than $1.30/gallon here. Race gas is around $10/gallon here (VP 104). You also have to consider you’ll get about 30% better fuel milage on race gas. Using those numbers, you would make up the difference by the time you used 50 gallons of race gas.
50 gallons of race gas= $500
65 gallons of E85 (30% more fuel needed)= $84.50+$400 pump upgrade= $484.50
The bleed is consistent in all gears. Usually kicks in about 5500-6000 RPM.
As far as I can tell I am getting about the same results now with or without LC. I’ve done some 0-60 testing with the P3 gauge and any difference seems to be negligible.
I had bot APR ECU and TCU before, but I can also tell you that a local buddy who is EPL stage 1 just went in and had the APR TCU flashed al la carte. lol
