GERMANBrew's Lightweight RS5 Journey

Hahn, I can’t give you a definitive yes/no about the rear belts because I have an “AIRBAG” light on already due to the Wingbacks. I did scan the car though several times and I don’t recall seeing anything seatbelt related. I’ll check again this summer when I pull the old gal out of the stable.

I’ve been on the hunt for OEM RS5 wingbacks without much luck.

Besides eBay.co.uk any suggestions on where else I should be looking?

I found mine on EBay.DE the German site. Sometimes RS246.com has a set. PartsBy Topher on IG might be able to help as well. You have to be patient and ready to go. It took me 18 months to find and secure mine.

Thanks!

We will see what pops up =D

Are they still $5k?

They are still $5K and UP. Inflation right?

The other option would be to go with the Recaro CS’s from AMX Performance out of Poland. He reworks the covers to your specifications.

did the OEM wingbacks only come in B8 RS5’s in EU? Or also B8.5s?

They came in 8.5’s also. We Americans are too fat to get them.

Same with the C5 RS6’s. I had to buy a set for my RS6 from Germany a few years ago.

Rs4’s had them as well b8 & b8.5’s

Rs4 seats will work in the rs5?

Any modifications needed?

I may have found myself some rs4 wingbacks.

RS4 ones will work just as well other than having the wrong stamp in the headrest.

Mine are from a Cabriolet RS5 so those have a latch mechanism integrated into the “harness holes” in the shoulders area. It’s kind of slick and let’s you fold the seat forward with ease. I think the R8 ones have that as well.

Issues wise…you will get an “AIRBAG” light in the cluster and you will have the “Passenger Airbags OFF” constantly illuminated. There are fixes for both. I’ll get around to those someday.

Yes defo will work and fit as are the same as the RS5 seats only thing is they will say RS4 on them but if your having them retrimmed then its not an issue !

Since the last update I’ve:

Gotten married, had a kid and hunted for a few very special parts for this build. I’m happy to say that things are going well on all 3.

Big items to come and some serious weight to be shed. Stay tuned…

Well after numerous delays and the ups and downs of importing overnight parts from Japan, I FINALY got my unicorn wheels in and on. I’d been drooling over a set of these since I first heard of them and their weight saving advantages.

BBS Fi-R 20x9 et25 are the specs and 20lbs per wheel are the weight. These were swapped on in lieu of my 20x10.5 et25 BBS CH-R wheels. The tires also dropped 20mm width on the initial run on some 265’s as compared to the 285’s that were on the CH-R’s.

20X9 et26 Rotor wheels 34lb
20x10.5 et25 CH-R 29lb
20X9 et25 Fi-R 20lb

That is 36lbs lost in the wheels alone from CH-R to Fi-R or 56lbs total from the Rotor wheels to the Fi-R.

Upon the 30 mile mixed use drive home from the shop I found that the car drove VERY differently. The steering felt so much lighter. Like less of a gorilla grip pavement grabber and more of a commuter car feel. The braking was MUCH better. Car stopped easier and more aggressively. Acceleration felt better off the line and in the twistys.

Looks wise, I really liked the CH-R wheels and I had them dialed in with proper tweaks. CH-R wins in the looks department but maybe with some larger tires and the silver script vs gold script BBS logo on the center caps I’ll be able to get them to a better looking fit.

Next up is a very light weight set of C7 RS6 rear CCB brakes!

I am a BBS fan. CH-R is a good Pressure Cast wheel but you can’t beat that Forged Fi-R. I’ve got OEM Forged 10spoke on my RS5 (8lbs a wheel lighter than the original Rotors but not really as good looking in my opinion) but I’ve got LM’s on my Cayenne and RS-GT’s on my C5 RS6.

Very nice Hahn. I didn’t know those 10 spokes were THAT light. That’s quite the savings.

The 10 spokes would be the 265/19 inch forged that were the standard for RS5 B8.5? I read before they were lighter but also heard otherwise. Good to have it confirmed. I have been trying to buy them for a while now.

I have got rotors for both winter and summer tires. I never figured out if there is a difference between them, or if you can use the Summer rims for the winter. Always wondered, but does not matter at this stage.

So now can get rid of the set whose tires wear out first and since I have spare Summer tires could use 19 inch for winter tires. Haven’t found any buyers when I tried and the question is, the owner of what model is gonna want to buy them.
