Golf Thread

Have to say I’m pretty bummed out about all this. Sak, I know you’re not the biggest Tiger fan, but this guy was one of my childhood idols (along with MJ). I followed him religiously through high school and college. And to watch him Peter out like this . . . it’s really depressing. He’s someone I always looked up to - not for personal matters obviously, for there he is seriously lacking. But rather his seemingly neverending will to be the best at whatever cost. Winning the U.S. Open on a fractured leg encapsulated that mentality more than anything.

And look how far he’s sunk. I consider it a tragedy, not just for golf, but for lovers of perfectionists of all athletics. Rough day, especially watching the rerun now on GC.

Who said I’m not a Tiger fan? I don’t wear ugly Nike shit, but I think golf is boring without him, and I think for a time he was the most electrifying person in all of sport. I’ve never been anti-Tiger.

Anyway, quit being a drama queen.

2010-2012 he was crap. He won nothing, kept getting hurt, and just sucked. Everyone said he was finished.

Then 2013 happened. He won 5 of the 10 biggest events in the world. He had the lead or was within a sniff of the lead in 3 majors going into the weekend. He was hands down, out and out, the player of the year. NOBODY in the last 10 years has won 5 times in a season other than Tiger. Not Rory. Not Phil. Hell most of these ‘great new players’ like Fowler and whomever haven’t even won 5 times in their career.

If not for his back surgery he would have continued that trajectory in 2014. Unfortunately injuries got in the way. It takes time, and he will be back strong. he won’t be Tiger 2000, but he won’t be Tiger2014 either.

So let’s not get ridiculous. Lots of people wrote Jack off in the late 70s when he started playing less and hit his late 30s. They were embarrassed in the 80s a number of times when he showed the world what’s up. In fact he won more majors AFTER everyone said he was washed up than anyone has won since other than Tiger, Phil, Faldo, Stewart, Vijay and Ernie. Think about that…after Jack was washed up and 40 years old, he won 3 majors, when he was fat, old and hardly played or cared. He was by far the best of all time and had no motivation to keep pressing. Yet he still went out and won the same number of majors Vijay Singh won in his entire career.

Tiger is psychotic and driven, and is fucking ripped and in shape. He will be playing high level golf for the next 8 years. You really think he’s done? You’re a brave man if you put money on that.

So again…let’s not get crazy lol.

Haha ya I was being overly dramatic. I was really looking forward to his return this year, and seeing him withdraw from another tournament due to back issues was depressing. Seriously, though, how many times can an athlete recover from serious back problems? You have to think it’s crossed his mind whether he can ever return to even 75% of his former self. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out. Sucks that he’s now out of the Top 50 and won’t be able to play Doral. I think Honda is his next event.

Btw I thought I remember you saying something about how you weren’t really that much of a fan of his. Probably just misread one of your posts.

I had no idea that Billy Casper was such a winner. 51 victories! That’s crazy - he was really overshadowed by Jack and Arnie.

bunch of majors too

I think the billy casper story that always stands out is how he played the 16th hole at Oakmont in teh US open. It’s a 235 yard par 3 today, and it was a 235 yard par 3 in the 50s and 60s as well. Difference being, guys hit wooden drivers and totally crap balls. They hit drivers 275 yards if they were the equivalent of Bubba Watson today. Guys like Casper looked at the 16th hole and though 'Am I really going to hit driver on a par 3, and end up in tough bunkers or impossible US open rough? No chance.

So he laid up to the short fairway type cut just short of the green, chipped it close and made par 4 days in a row that way.

That was him…do what it takes to score, no matter what it took.

Not always sexy, but highly effective. 51 TOUR wins is no joke in any era.

I recall Zach Johnson winning the '07 Masters Tournament by playing the par 5s in a similarly unsexy and effective birdie making way.

Wasn’t it at Winged Foot?

I’d probably do the same thing if I was playing that hole. I don’t have a club for 235 yards. My five-wood goes about 225 on a good swing. No 3-wood in my bag.

was that it? yeah, when he won in the 50s.

That’s a good 4 iron or a 21 degree rescue club for me. Bay Hill 2nd hole is around there. Tough as balls…green is elevated and slopy as fuk.
