Interesting race between a stockish B7 RS4 and a Stage 2 B8 S4

Saw this on audizoo, and I’m a bit disappointed it wasn’t posted up here since both guys are members.

[QUOTE=NY07RS4]Well the owner of the B8 was in 3rd gear (I thought he was in 2nd like us) when we did the pull. We wen’t from around 30ish mph to 130+ and he never left me. I had a touch less than half a tank. I think he had a half of a tank. I had nothing extra in the trunk. He did have a bunch of stuff, mainly the other RS4’s junk so the two rs’s would be more even when doing the pulls. I weigh 220 he I’d assume wieghs less. I’m not positive on all his mods but I think he has APR V2 tune and AWE exhaust - don’t quote me I’m not positive. I think the B8 owner also said he hit a rev limiter at some point. When I shifted from 4th to 5th we didn’t stay on it for more than a second and then let off. I was surprised we stayed even because this B8 has crushed my 60-130 time pretty significantly. It was fun to see how we compared.

[QUOTE=tsivas27]Paul it was a handicapped race of sorts for me [;)]. IIRC started in 3rd and kept slowing down in speed before we actually went… but I did hear third gear on my handheld radio- then again it wasn’t working that good…granny shifted into fourth and i just bumped off limiter and stayed in fourth (~128) on shutdown. This is after you guys did about 10 pulls and had your cars nice and adapted vs me driving around for 30 mins cruising at 60mph spotting you two in Comfort mode lol.

Good news is my third gear pulls almost as good as you two in second [:D] And I did manage to get ahead of both of you even with a crappy start.

Looking at the numbers, the B8, at 35 MPH in third is at around 2450 RPM, meaning it has about 4550 RPM to go till redline. The B8 makes 95% of its peak torque at 1500 RPM for the most part, so I’m not sold on the fact this was way out of his powerband…it’s not a big turbo 4 cyl that waits for boost till 5500 rpm. It’s a TVS supercharged 3.0 V6…and it pulls hard from that spot (and every spot) on the RPM curve.

The RS4 at 35 mph in second is at about 4100 RPM, meaning it has about 4100 RPM to go till redline. This is not optimal for the RS4 as we all know, so again not sure why the B8 owner is pointing at this as a big advantage.

Further, if the B8 WERE to start in second gear, it would only mean he was starting at 3500 RPM with 3500 RPM to go till redline so not drastically different. Instead he lived with third gear for a little while longer and saved himself having to shift from 2nd to 3rd, which is the hardest shift on these 6 speed cars in a dragrace. Since he has admitted that he shifts like a grandmother, being in third gear would have saved him a 0.5 second or so gear change where he is off throttle.

Let’s not forget that , especially on a cold night in a stock tune RS4 att 4100 RPM, his RS4 is limited to 52% throttle by the stock tune until about 5500 RPM where it allows him to go full throttle. A protectionary torque limiter means he is limping along waiting for his power.

The B8 S4 in question is stage 2 APR V2, (so no restrictions) and dynod something like 380 WHP I believe with this setup. At 2450 RPM in third gear he is making FAR more torque and horsepower than a stock tune RS4 so he should be crushing the B7, not making excuses about being in the wrong gear.

Finally the B8 owner said the RS4 just did about 10 pulls, thus was ‘adapted’ and claimed this was an advantage vs. the cool B8. The RS4 would actually be heatsoaked to FUCK…which is a HUGE advantage for the B8 S4 owner.

Again…I don’t buy the theory that this 3rd gear start was bad or any of this other stuff. Just someone who was not happy about a result is what it is looking like.

MAN UP TSIVAS! lol

You guys should race from a dig. The RS4 4.11 gears really help it get rocking and I reckon it would be a shock to the B8 S4 owner. Most B8 S4 owners trash the RS4 without knowing anything about it other than ‘it’s not FI so it is not tuneable’ (lol). It would be a good wakeup call for many of them for us to get some pulls done.

nah- hardly upset Saki. I think Tony was upset though as he was trash talking to Paul all day.

great read though. It’s like you were there lol.

Few things…Rpms def weren’t 2450 though for 3rd gear. closer to 2000-2200 rpms. only thing i’d add/correct. A good part of the boost comes in around 3000 rpms. I think I would have pulled a little earlier with second gear start. Wasn’t making an excuse. Just going by what we have done in past. I have done pulls with Tony in second on several occasions and I pulled ahead much earlier.

And “Stockish” includes JHM lw f/r rotors, lw crank pulley, intake manifold spacers, and fresh carbon clean or LW FW/stage 4 clutch/ LW front rotors on other car.

But I’ll get you a good video when we go out on a Sunday morning when Paul’s down again. Strap the gopros on both cars. Otherwise it’s a he said/he said thing.

And hey I don’t shift like my Gia Gia when it counts! :stuck_out_tongue:

Still haven’t lost to those two yo-yos.

I wish I recorded their conversations. Classic material. Gold, Jerry. Gold.

Yeah he was stockish.

Fully stock exhaust including all four catalytic converters stock tine, stock clutch and flywheel, stock wheels etc.

Will be interesting to see done more action between you three.

P.S. RPMs are RPMs. If you were at 2000 like you said that means you were starting from 28 mph which is unlikely…however if you did it still SUCKED for the RS4 (3400 in second). He is limited to 52% throttle until 5500 rpm in second and third, even if he mashed it to the floor. I would say you were lucky it was a tie

Post up your dyno plot so I can show you what you are talking about.

Yeah maybe next Sunday if Paul and Tony are down and weather is nice.

Revs were def low 2000-ish rpms though. That I do recall.

You know me man. I am most pro rs4 b8 guy u will come across.

I wish Jhm made those stockish mods for the b8. Well lw rotors are next for me at least. Those intake spacers are phenomenal!

I have to agree with saki on the starting in 3rd to 2nd gear. It all depends on lowend tq and gearing. I did a 60 to 130 on vag last night ran 10.9 ( starting in 3rd) then this morning did it again(starting in 2nd) lost 9 tenths of a second. so my is faster just to let the low end tq muscle through. The rs must have high oil temp due to repeated pulls which kills our timing.

Still good running none the less.

Hey sorry to be off-topic but where can one acquire the JHM LW crank pulley for a B7 RS4?

Don’t see it on their site and a Google search doesn’t turn up too much either…

Call Dan at JHM. He has some in stock I believe. Thing is a piece of art.

Alright cool, will do. Surprised they haven’t added it to their website yet. I can’t drive for a few months so I am on a part-collecting spree.

The LWCP should be in the “overly engineered” hall of fame.

Yes you can as I have one on my RS.
Zero issues!!

I am about to order this pulley today. Should I order a new belt too?

Yes and a new tensioner as well. if you’re going to be in the region you might as well take care of the maintenance in the surrounding areas. New belt, tensioner and LWCP are great maintenance/mods to do.

any followup on the TSIVAS vs. NY07RS4 showdown in longtown?

negative… as far as any runs on the island, near us…both of us have been super busy with work and weather definitely hasn’t cooperated.

etown… nothing has been setup.

swesna had mentioned something about some of the RS4s getting together. paul going away on vacation. don’t know when he is returning.

The earliest I could make it to ATCO would be mid-late November. We’re away until then. I will have the same set up on my car as I do now. I probably won’t do the tune/clutch/fw & full exhaust until either December or after the winter. I don’t want to be stuck trying to break in a clutch while there is snow to deal with. It usually snows in January so if I install everything early December I can easily accumulate enough city driving in one month to double the requirement. If not, late Feb early March.

I’m really looking forward to a trip to the strip, will be a lot of fun.

you guys can probably have a boatrace with your Audis tonight…looks pretty crazy. Hope you guys aren’t billionnaires with oceanfront property.

Lol Paul- the governor just called to see if it’s ok to shut down my private test track

Cool, yea I’m only at 51k miles but I guess it’s one of those “while you’re in there” type deals. Maybe they can do a little package deal for me? 8)

guys…not sure if i said ATCO but rs4_saloon and I can meet up at either ATCO or ETOWN.

mid-late november is fine with us…as long as I am not on vacation. at this point no solid plans for vacation.

Keep an eye on the track closure dates…
