A few weeks back I had removed my charcoal cansiter to try and see if it was causing a couple of issues.
The issues I had were
Hard to fill tank, constantly clicked off
evap code for “incorrect flow”
I had reset the DTC’s, and filled up with no issue. I thought I had fixed both issues, but as time goes on I find, I am not that lucky with the car. The evap code P0441 came back on 2 nights ago and then again this morning to work.
I have done the Vagcom tests for the purge solenoid and the LDP which have both come back as OK.
Things might be changing soon for my S4… I am looking into buying a CTS-V here within the next month. I’m working on selling my girlfriends Lancer so she can “buy” my Audi. Because 2 v8’s are better than one. LOL If we don’t sell her Lancer, it could be bye bye for the S4 so hopefully I can sell it to someone FAR away from me. I don’t know if I could stand seeing it everyday driven by someone other than me or the gf
Hold out for the Lancer sale. If you have even driven a CTS-V for a long time you might really miss the S4. I know a few Audi guys have made the jump and after they did it was only a few months before the newness wore off and they had buyers remorse.
I was thinking about that today while driving in shitty cold rain. I’m never nervous in either of my Audis in shitty weather, I don’t think that feeling is possible in a RWD with 500+hp.
If your life point to upgrade…why not search for a clean RS? You put a lot of work into your car and it would be great to keep you around.
Honestly that’s what I’m really hoping for. The Lancer just isn’t a fun car to drive and she’s been wanting to get rid of it for something else. She LOVES Subaru’s but I rather her have my Audi since 1) I can still drive it and 2) I’ve done so much with the car
The RS is still a bit out of my price range unfortunately. I am looking at like an 04-05 CTS V which you can get for under 20k. It’s mainly for the motor/trans combo. I can get a C5 Z06 for the same price but with as much as I do, the Z06 isn’t practical. I have my truck for the winter so RWD isn’t an issue but having the 4 doors is a must to me.
Nothing is for sure yet except for the fact we are trying to get rid of the Lancer then I will end up with something else. I decided if we can’t get rid of the lancer and have her take the S4, then I’m not going to get anything else.
I don’t want to sell it locally and honestly I don’t want someone to buy it and all of a sudden something goes wrong on it. My S4 seems to love to do that! LOL
On a side note, driving my S4 up to the race shop last night, I could feel the car having small misfires/backfires or something. I could hear it and feel it in the car. No CEL’s, nothing flashing. Cruising 6th gear at 2000-2200 RPMS. I left the car at the shop since I don’t want to risk breaking anything. Last time I put plugs in it was at 105k and I’m at 130k now. I didn’t look at anything yet but next weekend when I’m back up there I want to pulls the plugs and look at them. Still kinda noobish with VAGCOM, so is there anything I can test or log that might show an issue? Or anything in particular to check out? I know Jimmy awhile back had me check the adjusters in VAGCOM and everything looked OK then
I haven’t been able to do much recently. Been searching for a house w/ a garage so I can get out of my apartment.
Really trying to decide what to work towards next…
headers & timing service
better coilover suspension, new lighter wheels & tires
new exhaust system
Hopefully the new exhaust will be soon…and free. I am going to a car show tomorrow that has a exhaust competition. Winner gets a free custom stainless steel exhaust so at least I can get rid of the h pipe setup. Go x pipe and I think borla rear mufflers. Hopefully the place that does the exhaust is willing to build it to how I want it.
Another small update as well.
Awhile back I was fighting an EVAP code.
I had replaced the gas cap. The code still came back on occassions.
Then in March, I left the car at the shop as I was waiting to mount summer tires and do some other things. My cheapo oil pressure gauge was going bad. At first I wasn’t sure it was the gauge and I just didn’t have the time to work on it. I put a brand new Autometer digital oil pressure gauge and now its fine.
Anyways, I finally got tires mounted and went for a test drive to see how they were. I ended up getting the same evap code again, along with an LDP code for malfunction. I didn’t save the code so I don’t remember the exact number. It wasn’t a leak code but just a “hey you ldp isn’t even working” code
I ran the vag com tests on the LDP and the purge valve again. Both came back as saying system not OK. I ended up replacing the purge valve, ldp, and I put in a new canister since I had taken it our previously when I was figuring out why the gas pump would click off after a couple seconds.
After replacing those pieces and driving about 1000 miles, no more codes and the car actually feels like its running better. The car just feels smoother in general than it did.
So now that most of the maintenance has been caught up on, I think I can get back to the fun parts, and finding a better house to live in
Also picked up some Borla XR1 mufflers for the new exhaust. I won a raffle from a good exhaust shop in the area for a free stainless system. We had the car up on the lift a couple weeks back to show them how I wanted things. I have about ~$260 into it so not much of a loss if the exhaust is shit
Also getting the center diff out of a bad rs4 trans from my friends shop for 100 bucks. Waiting on that at the moment until everything gets finalized with the new house
ive always been a big fan of the borla sound im sure you will love it. 260 for exhaust is awesome!!!
rs4 center diff with lsd rear diff really will totally change the characteristics of the car. that’s the route ill be going. I prefer a more tail happy car vs the understeer I get now.
I used to be a big fan of magnaflow but recently after talking to Borla and doing other research on them, I thought they would be a good choice.
I’ve wanted a 4:1 diff for awhile but kept waiting to send mine out. Glad I waited because I feel like 100 bucks for the center diff was an awesome deal. I would like to get the rear LSD at some point in the future as well
Actually it was your car that helped me decide on those mufflers. I’m pretty excited to get the exhaust done Monday. I’m hoping it will be a nice change from my current setup
Ive found magnaflow to sound good at first but the deteriorate internally and u get that farty flappy cheap Honda noise after awhile. its like the insulation disintegrates. good choice with borla.
I dropped the car off yesterday to get the exhaust built, and they are finishing it up this morning. I’m really excited to see how it turns out, and how well they listened to what I want. If they build like some of the exhausts they have done, I’ll be happy with it.
Plus my buddy is letting me drive his 2015 Camaro SS 1LE. Really makes me love my Audi even more. The Camaro is such a pig. I’ve always been a fan of camaro’s but God driving to work was so disappointing
