Intro / Kind of a build thread

oh man thats a tough call. Your so far along with the project. It might be worth the wait for the next two months to just get the last bits you want.

With all the good work you have done and all the great parts you addded It is hard to wait longer for the last bits espically when you r this close. I dont know if your the kinda of guy that stiff like that will bother you or not. For me if I dont put or get everything I want right parts wise and other wise. I think about it everytime I start the car.

Its honestly haunting my dreams right now. This wouldn’t be a huge deal but unfortunately work is really slow right now so that my only delay from ordering away

Ive been there.

I dont know if its helpful or even wanted. But last time I was in the same spot. I just kinda wanted the project over with and done. I didnt get a few things that I know I really wanted. Every since then Ive been mad and everytime I start and drive the car I think and get worried that Im going to have an issue

Just some DEI product ;D

Great work man, awesome thread!

Been following since day one, keep up the good work.

Cheers!

Got the intake manifold back on. Really slowly making it look like an engine again. I was trying something with the valve covers & pcv system but unfortunately I managed to ruin both my valve covers. I found a left one but I need to find a right one still.

Once I get the new valve covers, all I have left is painting them, bolt on ps pump, alternator, and headers. Then put all the fuel injection stuff and wiring harness on the engine and its ready to go in.

I still need to open the trans and put the 4:1 diff in but that shouldnt be hard

Also kinda disappointed today. I tried calling JHM to order an auto tensioner but could never get anyone to answer. I sent an email after trying about 3 times and still didn’t manage to get a tensioner ordered. Dru had emailed back asking why i needed to order one, hopefully tomorrow we can get in touch and get it ordered.

Got the auto tensioner ordered today with Dru. I dont think he gets enough credit on the forums. He told me that no matter what i order, he can keep it a secret from my girl at home ;D

Everything looks like its coming along very nice. The auto tensioner is a cool piece.

I love the header wrap. we all know you cant really see the headers when the motor is back in the car but its still nice to know that the headers still look like headers. Some times I just like to peek in and down the side of the block to see mine. I know there there but its still nice to look at them. Wraping them like that allows you to still peek in on them from time to time

well I got my tensioner but i got no bracket or hardware to mount it ??? >:(

Spent a good amount of time working on the engine today. So close to having it wrapped up, maybe in time for winter haha

Auto tensioner and alternator are on. I had to remove the coolant pipe when I resealed the oil pan. I had issues getting the pipe off the water pump so I ended up removing the water pump as well. I gotta order a couple new o rings before I put the water pump back in

Intake manifold, fuel rail, injectors, anything related to that stuff is all on the engine and ready to go

Made up new oil lines for the oil cooler setup. Love me some aeroquip hose and fittings

I decided to change the oil thermostat. Went with the Earl’s one because it has 3 ports for pressure/temperature sensors. I plan on running dual oil temp sensors. Oil coming out, oil coming in

Flywheel is on and torqued. Along with everything else in the backside.

I can’t find my clutch alignment tool so once I do, I can finish the clutch assembly.

I am not really that far from having this engine completely back together.

Still to do on the engine:
-Finish valve covers
-Put water pump back on with new o rings
-Install headers
-Install coolant pipes

Once I get those items finished, I still have a few things to do getting it back in. I need to weld bungs in my downpipes for my air fuel sensors, make a bracket to hold oil cooler and ps cooler, make new ps hoses for cooler setup, put in gauges for air fuel and oil temps, put 4:1 diff in before putting trans on engine, and then button everything up

Next few weeks are busy with the SCCA national championships in less than a week and we are in full swing getting prepped.

Fingers crossed I finish before winter haha

I painted the valve covers yesterday

Got my 4:1 diff installed as well, no pics i completely forgot.

I pick up a new water pump tonight and really its not far away from getting the engine back in

Did you use any specific hi temp paint. They look great. That black really helps make that bold red intake pop.

I used summit racing single stage black. Unfortunately from experience, I know it can handle very high temps( and also flames)

The entire car was painted using summit racing single stage paint, which is actually made by Sherwin Williams.

I think I had about $25 in paint. I already had most of the supplies from painting the race car. Spraying is the easy part. I spent about 3-4 hours in prep alone

Valve covers look great. I am redoing mine at some point soon with a two stage paint from Eastwood. The prep is the hardest and longest part, actually painting the part is easy.

I really like the single stage paint from summit. its really a solid paint. I wouldnt use it to do much else than either painting the race car or painting VC’s

Awhile back Jimmy had posted a picture of a bracket he made to secure his oil cooler and I wanted to do the same. Fabrication is not my specialty but luckily I have a friend who is very good at it

WOW im really impressed with the single stage paint. I wasnt familiar with it. But it looks like it works very well.

I love that bracket you had made. That looks great.

We tried the summit single stage about 3 years ago on my race car. It went through 2 season, multiple car contacts, wall contacts, and the paint never chipped or faded. It lays down so well that we needed even need to buff out the car.

This past year I wanted to repaint the car and have the vinyl done to match my dads old camaro race car. It laid down so smooth we didnt buff it and it only turned a little black from the fire. Needless to say, I will use this stuff over and over on the race car. I tested it on my race car valve cover and it turned out just as awesome. I figured instead of paying $$$ for powder coating, I can paint it for a fraction of the cost and look just as good.

Well things are getting closer. Been actually getting something kinda done

I made new powersteering lines for the cooler

Letting the engine get some sun… lol

Got the headers, trans and misc pieces on

And finally the engine is back in its home. After I got it set in, I called it a night. Next day I work on it will be getting it 100% bolted in and connected up

Those new fittings look fantastic. This entire job is looking really well done and is giving me several winter ideas on a few things to clean up on the car. thanks for the updates and inspiration

still a few tricks up my sleeve I haven’t shown yet…mainly because i forget to take pictures

but if you need any info for your winter ideas, let me know!
