almost like it just doesn’t work

The fucked up part is the venn diagram of accidents the computer causes and accidents humans cause has a small overlap. So autopilot errors plus human errors summate to more road deaths to start with, then at some point by 2040 the death toll is lower. The problem is their product kills people for different reasons than peole kill themselves with cars. Tesla has software bugs and their enthusiast customers are dying finding them. Hell, the cameras might have blind spots requiring a recall of all autopilot cars. And they charge $2500 for this clearly untested feature.
I meet a lot of Tesla employees at the track. They all have Porsches. You should buy a Porsche too.

Well what do you expect for letting this fellow drive your car

LOL. T2 theme song started playing in my head when I saw that.
BMW i3 going 20 MPH like a laden truck up a 7 degree grade on the highway.
Bmw I series- it just doesn’t werk!

don’t they have a petrol engine too? Or was the moron trying to stay in electric mode?
The little petrol generator (derived from their motorcycle division) is optional.
There is some fucked up programming for the EPA where the optional $6000 gasoline engine can’t run until the battery is like 9% remaining charge. Technically the car has pure EV status even with the gas tank. But the tank can be no larger than 2 gallons.
Basically you have to mod the fuck out of the i3 to make it remotely practical. The problem is it’s $45k or $199 for a subsidized loss leading lease. So most sane people are leasing them.
It’s interesting how many Tesla drivers are now coming forward and admitting their cars are shit.
This is what happens when people are scared to confront a legion of overzealous Tesla fans. Stories get buried.
Just look at this thread. I ran through the simple economics of the Tesla company and their model S, and was immediately attacked by a Tesla zealot who has largely ignored what I said and instead launches attacks about everything but the facts originally presented. This continues today, with him not stopping after 20 pages

Their 130 million miles driven number is complete bullshit. The average age of a car in the US is 11.5 years old. Older cars are 70% more likely to have a fatality. The driver isn’t wearing a seatbelt in 45% of fatal accidents in the US. So basically Tesla is saying that autopilot is as safe as a 2005 Chevy Malibu with no seatbelt PER MILE DRIVEN. Extremely disingenuous.
You know who Tesla’s competitors are? The Volvo XC90 and the MB GL550, both of which have MULTIPLE YEAR PERIODS with 0 fatalities in the US. That’s the number to beat. 0. Nothing less.
The silicon valley people make excuses like “this is going to happen” and “this will eventually save lives” and “the computer is better than a [stupid] human”. 100% unacceptable. It’s crash automation. It will get in the same crash every single time. Yes it prevents a few fender benders but so does any pre-brake system. Avoiding body damage only to have it occasionally be blind and ram a 2 ton full object into something is not even remotely cool.
Germany has banned autopilot. They never approved it, in fact.
The US govt is so dysfunctional at this point that no federal agency has the authority to regulate autopilot. Unbelievable. Fuck me.
I find all the hassle I see with folks scrambling to get a parking spot with a charger at work amusing. They are constantly looking outside multiple times a day if they couldn’t get one to see if one opened up, and then having range anxiety when they couldn’t charge before going home. sure that sounds a lot better than having to go to the gas station once a week. :
^^ seems like we have reached (and passed) peak tesla
I have great respect for how far ahead Germany is on this, US distribution/dealer issues aside. Tesla Motors is shaping up to be just another American car company. Fast and loose with quality and customers’ lives.
Usually when I give you a rating its a smite over your pro-tesla bullshit. This thread reached what 18 pages simply because you wouldn’t shut up. Now you’ve switched sides for page 19. That’s smiteable. However your anti-government comments brought you back to square.
Elon subpoenaed to appear before Senate transportation committee. A regulator will be appointed.
anyone else think autopilot needs to be all or nothing since a large percentage of people don’t/can’t understand/remember all the nuances?
There is nothing automatic about auto pilot. If Tesla made a manual transmission you’d have to guess when it was going to miss a shift and intervene.
