I only have one question…if you have the financial means to buy an R8…why are you fucking with a B5? Also…if you can afford an R8…why not buy an RS4 low mileage and send it straight to JHM for a blower?
The B5 S4 has intrigued me for awhile. I just like it. And I like it’s potential. It’s also a sleeper that nobody suspects to be fast. I don’t get thrilled winning races in a car that nobody expects to beat. My daily driver is a full size luxury car not far from the starting price of an R8. I own that car primarily for the comfort of my passengers. The S4 is my “fun” car. I wanted something SPECIFICALLY without a warranty that I could tune the balls out of without having to worry about removing this and that every time I take it to the dealer for warranty work. A B8 S4 would be warrantied, more expensive (I already have two new cars and don’t need a third) and not as much a sleeper as the B5. An RS4 isn’t a sleeper either. This car is my toy.
Which is exactly why you should slap yourself in the face and not sell. You are going to have a very unique car that will be (a) well sorted and (b) capable of doing great things. I don’t think you can put a price on that.
$30k for an 11-sec AWD car? I’d say bargain. Plus consider invisible benefits of your car - you got to work with jnaut and count vohn and seem to be getting good support from both.
I have a Ferrari dealer and Lamborghini dealer a few miles away. Earlier in the year I wanted to stop in and buy one of their pre-owned vehicles but my wife, the sensible one, talked me out of it. Now she’s all “LF-A” but I really don’t want to spend that much on a car. I’d rather buy a home and rent it out. However, an R8, which she also likes, would be a nice compromise.
I’m guessing you got hosed by a B5 years back and have always wanted one since. Then you got involved in one of the most enduring builds since the B5 was born (though the most important aspect is completed by the right people) and now you realize it’s an old car and maybe it’s not as cool as you thought. It is an old car but a damn fun one and you shouldn’t do anything until you drive it. I completely respect your thought process about being “sneaky fast” except I went with the wagon variety but my issue is the fuckjobs buying them now. I’m talking about the fuckjobs that don’t take the time or spend the money to do a solid build. This is what happens when you can scoop them up for 5-7k. Some guy on AZ is building a really sweet B6 track car which is rare but nice to see it done right and your project didn’t cut corners either! You should enjoy it for a little before you do anything. Someone will buy that car for 20k but not much higher.
Otherwise, I do want to keep the car so I’m purposely pricing it outside of a reasonable range. MAYBE I’d take $30k. Maybe. The guy looking to buy it is in the same boat I was in 9 months ago. He’s considering a build of his own BUT he knows how long it’s taken me - someone who had all the cash on the table - forever and a day to get the car finished. He’s apparently as impatient as I am and doesn’t want to wait. I would have paid $30k for my car, exactly the way it is, finished - in a heartbeat. No questions asked (besides receipts for parts and labor).
Ack! Jnaut is sick so it looks like the car won’t be ready this week. Has anyone else noticed that more people than usual are sick? I have so many friends, relatives and acquaintances that are sick this winter. It’s not usually this bad. WTF? I’m surprised I’ve been healthy. But, really. Everybody is sick…
Anyway, I’ll push the “test drive” for the potential buyer to next Sunday. Maybe he’ll buy another turn-key vehicle before then. I’m glad Jason gave me a heads up early in the week…
Well, I did a “drive by” today on my way out and saw “the man” at the shop. I didn’t stop in to avoid catching any illnesses but I texted him and he feels much better. That’s good. So… Next week may be my week.
The Count emailed me a couple of weeks ago letting me know he had time to get rolling on the tune - but that was two weeks ago. With a little luck, Jnaut will finish whatever still remains to be done so the tune can be started and - hopefully - Count Vohn has time this week. Worst case scenario, maybe I’ll go with “plan b” and install the base stage 3 J-Fonz ECU and see how that works. Either way, I’d really like to be driving the car next weekend. And I’d like give the potential buyer the test drive I promised him.
I believe he has but only one or two. I believe one car exploded but it wasn’t a built bottom end. If he were to tune my car, which is very unlikely, I’d be very cautious without lots of logging and back and forth with overnight shipped ECUs.
Jason called and said my car would be up on the lift tomorrow - so I’m guessing that means he’ll be finishing up the methanol injection installation. He also mentioned that Count Vohn gave him a call but missed it - and would be calling him back today. So, that’s cool. Maybe this ball will get rolling now.
Just remember what I said. Stuff isnt as easy as snaooing fingers and its done. Even water injectorn takes lots of work pluming wire work mounting the pump then putting back the parts you needed to take off todo all the work
