JBones's Silver Bullet B6 S4

It is funny because I think that I am dramatically slower than when I was working at the dealerships full time. I used to obliterate the factory warranty times so badly that I couldn’t run time on customer pay repairs because I was too busy trying to make up the 75% requirement of warranty labor time requested by letting the clock run.

Actually there are still a few tools on the Snap-On truck that I want. Unfortunately I don’t have any more room inside my tool box. Too bad the box that I want costs more than a Smart car. Also the lift is much more helpful than the supercharger.

keep enjoying your thread. You are very quick on repairs. I read a few weeks back your transmission broke then I say oh he is down for 5 weeks. Less then 5 days later your back in the car again. Very good.

Thats becuase it is not a b5 s4…jk

Great build…hopefully you can drive it for a while without it breaking…

…so, what are the new times from tonight?

The new time is 13.082 @ 108 MPH with a 1.727 60’.

They were packed with people because of the Pro Mod cars. It took a half hour to get into the track from the main road and then we sat for over a hour and a half in the staging lanes. So the three of us that went only got to make one pass each.

The interesting thing to me is I got to play with my temperature gun. When we first got to the track my intake manifold was reading in the 190 degrees on top to 200 degrees farther down by the bolts and the blower was around 150 degrees. By the time that we jumped into the car to make a pass the intake manifold got down to like 73 degrees on top to 74-75 degrees farther down by the bolts and the blower got down to 80 degrees. So near or just about ambient temperature.

I compared my car to R&CS4’s car with intake manifold spacers and the JHM intake manifold. When we first got to the track we checked his intake manifold to see around 173 degrees on top to 180 degrees farther down by the bolts. After icing down the intake manifold he got down to 120 on top to 130 farther down by the bolts.

Just thought that was interesting. He left his towel under the bag of ice on the intake manifold the entire time as I removed mine and just laid the bag of ice on top of the intake manifold after a while.

what did he run (who is R&CS4)? what did slow4 run?

I just saw this pic. That looks way too familiar lol

I wonder if anyone makes upgraded bits for this. Seems like a handfull of people have broken them at some point.

R&Cs4 ran a 14.0xx and he is only on Audizine. He has an automatic B6 S4 convertible that is catless with a H pipe catback exhaust, JHM intake manifold with spacers, and the JHM tune.

Slow4 had some issues. Here is his post but the video tags don’t work so I included a link straight to his post on Audizine.

[QUOTE=Slow4;8997465]Well…I think I killed my clutch or burnt the shit out of it at launch.

I launched a little over 3200 and lost all engagement with my clutch. It would not spring back until I pulled over and came to a creep; burned through 1-2 before I realized it wasn’t coming back up.

Good run by RCS4 and JimmyBones though

I haven’t found anybody yet that is worth paying. In a few minutes I am going to email Raxles because my replacement front axles are starting to leak out fluid from the inner CV joints. The OP parts axles that I have come with a lifetime warranty but it is not worth the effort to keep replacing them every few weeks.

Why wasn’t slow4 using LA?

I wasn’t comfortable with LA since I used it only once and it felt weird dropping from 5500 to 3000; launch was violent.

On this single run, I got antsy and launched a little over 3200. In hindsight, I launched late and attempted to make up time by punching it, powering through one and two. This resulted in me glazing the shit out of my clutch and freezing the clutch pedal in place.

In my video, you’ll see Rob launch like a bat out of hell and you’ll see me react once the light hits green.

Overall, good showing for Rob and Jimmy, horrible for me.

Come on slow…you sound something like troy kid.

It isn’t about how you feel with LA, it’s how it’s designed to work. If you’ve read and listened to everyone out there…your not actually dumping the clutch at 5500 RPMs. I had nearly 20 launches at the strip with a stock clutch and even more on the street. It is very consistent and IMHO will prolong the life of the clutch vs you trying to launch yourself with little to no experience. I think the best 60’ I cut stock tune was a 1.82, but after getting JHM tuned you couldn’t keep me out of the low 1.8s high 1.7s.

Launches will always be violent in AWD cars…you get little to no wheel spin so the car actually just GOES.

Good to see you get out though, I hope your clutch is good, but trust me when I say LA is your friend.

Haha; I just need more practice with the LA, point blank.

My clutch is ok, is at least I think it is.

l still don’t understand how the whole “LA doesn’t launch at 5500” thing works. Can someone point me to where this has been discussed?

"Anyway I thought we should do a thread so that guys can post videos of launches and stuff. I will also include my ‘how to’ tips for what I found was the most effective way to use JHMLA

  1. TURN OFF ESP - if you don’t do this you’ll have a brutal launch but will also cause your car some harm as it wil be fighting itself (esp vs. Launch assist programming). This is very important so again TURN OF ESP!!!

  2. Depress the clutch - I liked to have the clutch just an inch below the engagement point but having it right to the mat is just fine

  3. MAT the accelerator - revs wil leap up to about 5500 rpm and hold if launch assist is working.

  4. Release the clutch in a swift instant motion. No feathering…no dilly dallying…just lift right off it.

important tip - do not hold the rpms at the launch control hold level for more than half a second…once you get there and it holds at 5500: BANG! get off the clutch and go. Just be ready to clutch again because first gear will fly by…its a short gear and you’re JHM tuned
"

"Ive helped a few guys with maintenance stuff that were updated with the LA program and this is what I know.

1 you need to be at a complete stop.
2 you NEED NEED NEED to turn off your ESP. If you don’t you run the risk of doing damage to your clutch.
3 you Need to be in first gear with the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.
4 when your ready got WOT let the RPM’s go up and settle for a few seconds
5 make sure to leave your foot all the way to the floor on the gas pedal
6 completely remove your foot from the clutch pedal. DO NOT SLIP THE CLUTCH… DO NOT SLOWLY REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE CLUTCH PEDAL. COMPLETELY QUICKLY REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE CLUTCH PEDAL
7 make sure to stay WOT till your past 5000rpm

A few things I noticed.

1 your not actually launching the car at 5000+ the program just has to see 5000 and WOT to activate. The program seems to be trying to actually launch the car at 3000. This seems to be the actual best launch RPM for our cars

2 the launch RPM is somewhat based off the health of your clutch. If you have a good clutch your RPM’s are going to be in the 3000range. If your clutch is weaker your going to see lower 2500rpm grab points.

3 the program actually is IMHO better then launching the car on your own. The JHM program seems to have Tq limits in it to makes sure you don’t do damage to the drive-line components.

Here is a quick video of the LA in action

Did I write that first part? Feels like my writing

It is; I sourced it from here and sourced the second from Justin’s post on AZ. On topic questio for Jimmy, in regards to his tune and list of mods:

On my post above, I remember reading what Justin said JHM coded in a fail safe limiter so the torque doesn’t kill the clutch or something to that affect and I recall listening to you say something about the amount of torque you put down when you launched at MIR.

Does the JHM LA work against the torque you put down with supporting mods, if there is/was a fail safe limiter?

My tune does not have Launch Assist. The ECM was tuned over a year ago with the older chip style before JHM switched to the port flashing with the cheetah cable. It would be cool to try out the Launch Assist but I think JHM would have to read the ECM information, remove the chip, and then flash the ECM again. If they are willing to do it then I would overnight the ECM to them tomorrow.

If you’re rocking 1.7 second 60 foot times will the. Sr is unoajr d by shit da, I would say there’s no real reason to. La is not likely to get you the best launch… But rather to get you a good launch every time.

Have you posted your time slip yet? I would like to get a look at it. See where you are losing time.

Your post got a little messed up there. More than anything I just want to try it out since I have never done it before.

Not yet. It should be up later today.

So your old tune works with the supercharger?

Just saying but you may actually have LA unless you specifically asked not to have it. My chip tune was done some time in 2011 and has LA.

I’ve somewhat recently asked JHM about upgrading from the “chip” tune and you would have to ship them your ECU, they would return it back to stock and ship it back, then you would have to cable flash it. The ECU has to be in your car when you do the new flash tune.
