**JHM 3 Liter Build**

^The lower compression of the 3.0 is a great way to start with boost, they’ve got a leg up right there. The bigger unit may even fit with the 3.0 better out of the box. But you may need to add w/m spray at 9psi which is an advantage of the S4’s lower boost right now.

Great info and perspective there beem!

…this brings me back to my next question. Were are we in the exhaust discussion? Has anyone found a shop that would fab up some proper DP’s? Getting catless ones should be easy to make and would show us what the motor is really capable of. And from there ones with Hi-flow cats could be adapted for those in non-emission friendly areas

[quote=“BCsniper,post:16,topic:2758”]

Are the ones JHM is making not going to be catless?

I would think that the JHM ones would start catless and then if needed you could add cats. Im thinking that the 3.0 guys need the price point to be realistic. Things like a clutch and flywheel where there isn’t much room for cost savings are going to be more expencive. If the Dp’s could be sub 575 for catless I think that is doing good for the 3.0

My thoughts are wait for JHM to test with there build car then see how well it does without cats then go from there.

Hmmm liking the blower talk! The math behind it is rather interesting… it will all come down to how our internals can hold up. For me I’ll really have to see how the first few boltons do, but later on down the road I could see myself being interested in FI.

I was very close to pulling the trigger on the PES kit for awhile, but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. A decision I do not regret at all :stuck_out_tongue:

w/m may be necessary, but it may not. As long as the increase in boost pressure does not place the airflow/boost band into lower efficiency islands (I doubt it will since its a 1200CFM capable headunit), or does not increase blower speed so extremely, then w/m may not be necessary.

The important things to consider:
Power: Dependent only on airflow, the X-axis (hence the independent variable, what you set when you design the FI system)
Boost: Dependent on airflow from the blower, and restrictions beyond the blower. A more restrictive intake/exhaust will increase boost levels while reducing power (hence why boost =/= power)
Heat: The variable discussed here (what would determine the need for w/m injection or intercooling), dependent on efficiency and blower speed. Higher blower speeds and lower efficiency will heat the air more.
Airflow: Dependent on blower speed.
Blower Speed: Dependent on engine speed and the effective gear ratio of the crank pulley, blower pulley and internal step up (the gears in the headunit)

So basically point is you don’t design the system around a boost level, you select a power level you want, figure out an appropriate blower speed, run the blower to speed to determine boost, make sure the boost/airflow intersect is in a good efficiency range (throughout the entire power band, but especially at higher RPM since blower speed will be higher there and so there is a greater benefit to reduced IATs at high RPM with higher efficiency)… if it isn’t in a good efficiency island/s for the majority of the powerband a smaller/larger blower should be used. Boost is just a byproduct of restriction, the blower is better suited as a air mover than a compressor, so you make power by blowing more in. It is useful as a control system though, because you can relieve some restriction by opening the bov/diverter valve to let some ‘boost’ go, but really its bleeding off airflow not so much boost.

Hey Guys -

I wanted to keep updating our build here because again, we feel it’s best to keep the people informed who are supporting us and the community. We appreciate people going out of their way to get the community the new information needed to help this platform.

We just acquired a 3 liter car of our own that’s en route to our shop. However just because we’ve got a car of our own right now, doesn’t mean that we don’t want to see your cars in at JHM! We want to learn EVERYTHING about these cars and we can’t do that unless we see more of them. So if you’re local to us or if you’re up for shipping your car, we’d love to have it at JHM. The more cars we can see the more maintenance issues we can identify, understand, and offer solutions for.

The car we’ve acquired is another automatic which will allow us to dive into the transmission tune even further… because I’m sure motorsports916 will eventually want his car back! As soon as we take delivery of that car, we’ll be able to keep increasing our offerings for the Three Liter community.

Now we’re not going to leave our manual transmission guys out to dry… We are making a B6-A4 3 Liter Lightweight Flywheel to address concerns we’ve heard and seen where the bearing in the stock dual-mass flywheel is separating. On the B6-S4s we’ve seen this cause anything from a minor vibration throughout the RPM range to the flywheel completely separating inside of the bell housing and cracking the transmission casing. Stay tuned for further information about this flywheel and a JHM clutch kit.

As far as the ECU tune goes, it took us a few days to hack the 3 Liter ECU but now we’re making progress. Version 1.5 of the tune is definitely making solid power at the high end of the RPM range. There’s still a lot of progress to be made though.

Thanks again for the interest and support. We’ll keep you posted.

Thanks keaton. maybe I need to get a 3.0 now as well. I love my S5 and you guys did outstanding work on the ECU tune. I would love to have a winter car maybe the 3.0 will be just that.

Also thanks for updateing this site. I trully don’t even want to follow anything on AudiZine anymore that regards the 3.0. Its clear the 1.8T guys are not able to handle the develpoment of the 3.0 and the thread that has been started just turns into the 1.8T hate a 3.0 thread.

I know this might not be the venue for this. But today was a classic case of a 1.8T guy that couldn’t stand the thought of a fello B6 member stoping his possible 1.8T build to think about swapping back in the 3.0 and getting it supercharged by JHM… Something I hope you guys do… this vinnie guy then goes on a semi mential break down about something that isn’t even happening. In the end. Its clear to me that if the 3.0 guys stand a chance to enjoy and talk about there gains and or advancements it won’t be able to happen on AudiZine.

My thoughts are you might just want to start sending 3.0 guys to this site. My .02

good stuff Keaton

Officially jumped off AZ thread*

So, spoke to Keaton today. bought some extra time so they will have my car thru around mid-july if they need it.I am truly excited too see all the intreats in this platform.

And, I have to admit it BLOWS not having my car. I feel like a kid waiting to open presents on Christmas morning… But after speaking with Keagton this morning, I know its going to be well worth it!

Its painfull reading ON AZ. While you don’t like to see the back&forth its good to see someone sticking it to the negitive comments. The funny thing is the 1.8T guys come in bash then act all WOOOOOH… why are you reacting so harsh.

If You ask me. Both clint and the vinny guy need to grow up. I trully believe that the more sucuessfull these 1.8T guys believe themselves to be the more there going to be super Pro 1.8T and chip away at the advancment of anything but… Thats how I see it.

Still great to have you on here and you make the first big step for these 3.0 guys motorsports916. Being a Audi tech for 33years the 3.0 motor was one on its own. Its going to be a difficult motor to get power out of In my opinion but its great to see that JHM has taken on the challenge and Im eager to see where this can go from here

^WOW 33 years!?! Almost as long as they’ve been in the states :o

dropping by guys reading all this good news gets me excited. i tried fellas but these guy on the zine are ignorant. no point. i’m glad this can be our haven to just talk 3.0 without the “experts” coming in. ANYWHO what is all this talk about a blower. i just passed on some ROTI’S so dont let me down JHM. lol. j/p

Yeah, concave Roti’s are not easy to pass up!!! The new series look sooo damn sexy!!!

Can’t wait to see where things are going with the 3.0

Thanks JHM, Keaton, and those who first got serious about this lending cars, time, and knowledge! All of these things are the perfect ingredients for results!!!

honestly the more 3.0 guys that are here the better it is for the 3.0 guys. This site is filled with lots of guys that know what there doing and are excited about seeing the Audi N/a class of cars get off the ground.

These threads will advance further and faster. The fact that JHM has some presents here is only better for the development and communication with them during the development.

Thank you guys for all of your support thus far. I was just doing a little thinking about all of the 1.8t vs 3.0 back and forth and was wondering if you guys would like to see some pulls between the two. I drive a 2004 A4 Avant, 1.8t and it’s got everything short of a BT. I have an APR tune with the big injector file, a 3 inch downpipe (no cat) and an APR cat-back exhaust. That would make it stage ii+, I believe… Anyway, the more I drive motorsports’ car, the more I feel like this will be a good race.

If you guys are into it (I’ve already cleared it with motorsports916), I think we’re going to do a few pulls of my stage ii+ 1.8t vs the 3.0 stock and then with our early revision of the tune. We’ll see what happens…

Yes. I would love to see that!

Yes, I would love to see that also.

I think I can speak for everyone here when I say “Heck yeah lets see that!” ;D

I honestly could care less about it being 1.8t vs 3.0
I know thats what came of it but I simply want to see the improvements that can be made with the 3.0 period! 8)

Well said sir!
