My track day & Eurocode and Magnuson run 10.9 @ 124

I had two sets of Volks and a set of Advans (not on my Audi’s), and both are at the top of my list in terms of quality and usually weight. While most Advan wheels are pretty light, they only have a couple of forged wheels (they’ll end in “F”). Most Volks are obviously forged, and at least in my opinion, they have the best forging process (some of their 2-piece wheels are half forged/cast). Maybe the higher end BBS forged wheels are in the same ballpark.

As mentioned, the issue with both is limited fitments for Audi’s. Every Volk and Advan essentially comes in a 5x112 bolt pattern now, but the fitment options are limited for the S4. They usually lean toward the A5/S5 and TT. The S4 falls in between, and there are no good 18" or 19" options without redrilling a 5x114 wheel. They are also pricy as they will start in the $3k range, or about the same as a lower end custom forged wheel.

I agree with what you guys are saying though… The CH-R’s look damn good on the S4. Going to anything significantly lighter is either going to cost a lot, or mean sacrificing looks.

I left the likes of HRE off my list because you mentioned cost, and well, as much as I like them, they cost way too much. You can get the newer designs down to under 20 lbs. on a 19" wheel, but… All of the P1 line looks good, and the RS101M is kind of a cool take on the RS4 wheel design.

My personal wheel choices probably start and end with Volk and BBS wheels at this point, and maybe a lower end custom forged wheel like the BC Forged wheels I have now. If I was looking for an inexpensive/track wheel, I think the options I listed above are good ones. If I had an unlimited budget, HRE or the really high end BBS wheels would be on my list.

Not that it really matters, but the above wheel is actually the Volk G2 which is basically a newer design of the TE37 (although the design of the newer G2 has also changed, and doesn’t look exactly like that wheel either). Both come in some Audi fitments now, but as I mentioned above, in a 19" wheel you are limited to size/offsets that really only work on the TT and A5/S5. They’d probably work on the RS4 too…

I actually do like the TE37/G2 look, and if I could get a good Audi fitment, I’d run them without hesitation. I also like the G27 for the S4, but it’s probably closer to the weight of the CH-R and the fitment options suck.

G25 is not too bad either:

OZ Superforgiatas. Pretty penny but very light, look great.

Where do I find them for the S4? I know I can get them for the RS but haven’t seen them for the S4… Thanks!

Tire Rack is the only real distributor for OZ wheels in the US. If they can’t get them, no one else can. They don’t show S4 fitment in the Superforgiatas, but they usually only list pretty weak size/offsets on their site. If you call, they may have more aggressive options.

The OZ Leggera HLT is another wheel I’d add to my inexpensive 19" wheel list. I think it’s a decent looking wheel, and the 19x9" is around 22 lbs.

I really have fallen for Advan wheels after getting my TC3s. They are 18x9 ET 25 (basic perfect RS4 fitment) and they weigh 18 pounds. Did have to get them redrilled from 114.3 to 112 and get hubcentric rings for 73mm to 57.1mm but it was worth it. Plus they claim that they clear 390mm brake rotors and calipers. I can fit my whole hand between the back of the arm and the R8 front calipers on my S4.

Previously saw them listed in S4 fitment on tirerack but looks like they are no longer on there. Hmmmm…

Any wheel with a -R designation from BBS is what you want. Has the German OE look, doesn’t require hub centric spacers, substantially exceeds TUV ratings for strength. Wheels are a cheap/light/strong proposition where you only get to pick 2 of those things. Flow formed wheels are bending that trade off but they’re still like $600 a wheel.

The best wheel coming to market is the BBS FI-R at 16.5 pounds for 19x9, at around $7800 per set. Audi fitments should be out next year - it’s hugely popular with the M4 crowd. I still get the feeling that the flow formed are stronger. This is the only wheel that comes close to the 16lb plastic wheels on the GT350.

I saw their original post at some point on a bimmer forum. I think they just overlooked it when they posted.

If someone is looking for TE-37’s that will fit the B8 S4, there is a guy on Vendorzine selling what looks like a decent set for $2k. They are 19x8.5" ET35 (5x112, 66.56 CB). Probably weigh around 20 lbs. Pretty tempting… I just stumbled across these a few minutes ago on the FB page.

Edit: God dammit, I wish I wouldn’t have seen these after all this wheel talk. I’ll have to spend the rest of the day talking myself out of it…

+1 for OZ Leggera HLT
21.6 pounds for 19x9, tire rack sells them
OZ Ultraleggera and OZ Allegerita are different designs but IIRC they all weigh between 21 and 22 pounds for 19x9
18" are available as well

I personally have a lot more faith in OZ quality control than in all new wheel companies that show up and disappear every other day.

OZ Superforgiata are very light (somebody asked HRE if they can beat the weight of Superforgiatas, they said they don’t have anything lighter than what Superforgiata weighs)

sorry, OZ Leggera HLT are 21.6 lbs for 19x8.5 not 19x9

The 19x9" is supposed to be right at 22 lbs.

Just to add to the discussion… HLT is just another word for flow formed or flow forged wheels. You will also hear it referred to as MAT (Enkei) or Rotary Forged (TSW). Most of the lighter weight inexpensive wheels we have discussed are made with this (newer) technique. Most of the Enkei racing line, Advan wheels that are not forged, obviously all the OZ HLT wheels, the VMR FF wheels, the Renn-Motorsport wheels, TSW RF line, etc.

It still uses a (low pressure) cast wheel, but the barrel is heated, spun around, and rolled (literally with a big steel wheel/roller). This process changes the characteristics of the metal, and allows greater strength/less weight similar to a forged wheel. The middle of the wheel is still fully cast just like most wheels, and the outer barrel is subjected to this process.

too bad these are 7.5

my RE-11’s weigh 28lbs :o thank god my wheels weigh 20.3 lol

what wheels?

RE01R were great but heavy as hell too.

Richi has 19" HRE’s I believe. They are the newer P40SC line that has thinner pocketed spokes to make them lighter. P43 maybe?

HRE has actually done a good job at making their wheels lighter over the past 4-5 years.

Ok , so I checked with a tread gauge and it actually has quite a bit left. I’m puzzled as to why I couldn’t launch it right. My best 60ft of the day was a 1.88 mash and go. Can I chalk it up to just cold weather? Or should i swap the continentals out for PSS?

If your tires are still good, I wouldn’t swap them out for just that reason unless you really want to.

Honestly, with stock wheels/tires and brakes (no LW parts), that is not too far off what to expect. There are so many little factors that make a difference… Track prep for one will go a long way. I think if you work on your technique and/or tire pressures, it will get a little better too. Better tires might help a little. LW wheels and brakes will help a little more. I guess what I’m getting at is don’t swap to the PSS with the expectation that that alone will get you down to a 1.6 60’…

P43sc, i didnt pay anywhere near retail for them plus i’ve had two cars worth of use on them with something like 70k on them without a single bend or scratch so to me thats pretty worthwhile!
