I wonder if it has to do more with the APR restructure and new ownership
My scientific wild ass guess is:
APR realized they could not get as much power out of the kit as they would like ‘reliably’, and decided to shelve the project. Once the new ownership took over maybe they made an agreement with Magnuson to have them sell the kit, tuned to produce less power to reduce the risk of grenading mortors.
Lol, grenading MOTORS not MORTORS.
That’s a good theory however they are advertising more power than Apr said they achieved.
We heard that APR had blown atleast one motor in the development of this kit. And I see that as a good thing. They tested and found the limits. I dont know whats different here tho. The big gamble is how much more power can this motor take and what are the options of it goes bad. It seems like Audi is putting a 3.0t in like every car now so used motors shouldnt be too hard to find but the question I have is how much power can the stock block really hold
SO…I guess the $10,000 guess wins it?
Or is it $10,000 + fuel pumps + + +?
interesting. I would like to know how much might not be included in the price
So richi is getting one today he said…asked him to drop by here, would be a nice update to the thread.
Looking at the RSW install, it looks like the kit includes the supercharger, throttle body, new intake pipe/hose, some type of reservoir, and the ECU tune. I asked them to confirm anything else on the other site, so we’ll see what they say. There is definitely something different with the fuel line on that car, so I’d like someone to confirm if a fuel pump upgrade is required, included, etc.
I’m guessing the intake pipe/hose is needed for the larger TB, but it looks like it could be used with any intake that uses the stock filter adapter and location (APR, AWE, ECS). The new reservoir appears to just add additional coolant, but either way, I would think a full coolant system would be highly recommended based on the way this engine and tuning respond to increased IAT’s/temps. At the end of the day, you’re looking at something in the $11k-$12k range plus DSG tuning or a new clutch if you so choose (probably needed…). There is still the unknown about a HPFP upgrade too.
The common sense side of me keeps saying it’s not worth the money for what is realistically something in the 50-70 awhp range, and that money would be better spent towards a new car at some point. I keep telling myself I am done with mods to this car, but I guess I’ve been known to do worse spontaneous (and stupid) things before…
Josh, EC had a pic of what all comes with the kit, but don’t see it anymore… I think you’ve summed up pretty well what you get also plugs, some hoses, clamps, etc.
Heard from APR this morning… They will NOT be selling the kit, you have to buy through a “dealer”, which not sure all who that is at this point? Magnusson is also frowning on DIY installs from what I gathered and the car is NOT driveable w/o a updated flash do to the TB so, DIY would be nearly impossible for most…
I plan on making a decision today…
Based on what jones trapped on the 1320 in slightly shit conditions but with good ET, it sounds like it can be pushed a little further than many thought. Making that delta even smaller. I know a couple of other cars have trapped high but generally that was off bad ET, namely bad launches, which actually artificially inflates MPH.
If he goes and runs 11.40 @ 122 MPH in good DA, it’s going to be tough for people to justify paying another $6000-10,000 (whatever it is) to run 11.30 @ 123.
It’s interesting to note that
I thought there was a pic at one point too, but can’t find it now. I’m assuming the hoses are for the coolant reservoir that is added as it looks like it attaches to the S/C coolant pipes directly, and then back down to the main coolant loop. I didn’t know about the plugs… It’s a little strange that there are so many unknowns with several shops posting about it, and now installing it. Definitely a big marketing fail as most people willing to drop $10k on something like this will want all the details, and not just 50% of them.
Yeah, I don’t see how a full on DIY is possible at this point. I know the owner of a new APR shop here, and I could maybe talk him into letting me do it there, but that’s probably not an option for most people. He just got setup with APR, and my guess is he is not going to be selling the supercharger (I haven’t asked yet).
what happened to ‘oh it’s like an hr to install’ that everyone was saying 2 years ago?
sounds like they’re just trying to control all variables
JHM for example doesn’t let anyone self install supercharger kits when they’re still beta testing. They generally run it on their own cars for a year or two, then do a couple of local installs, then a few more, then a few more then they open it up once they’ve developed an instruction manual.
Sounds like the magnusson kit is still in beta testing (even though everyone keeps doing official launch threads then deleting them lol) so no DIY is understandable. it will open up in 6 months or something for DIY guys.
Primetime you should do your best to get the 1320 record. Sounds like you know what mod path jones took so if you can do something similar (not sure if it’s a GIAC only or APR compatible thing) that might answer your own question. If you can run something like I mentioned above…11.40 @ 122…will there really be any reason to bother with the 1740?
I have to grudgingly give credit to Jspazz because he said 2 years ago that he didn’t think a TVS1740 would add huge delta. Based on the fact we’ve heard what APR ran, and we’ve heard what Magnusson posted…he’s right so far. When APR tried to set records for the RS4, when they couldn’t beat JHM’s times, they pulled the seats, pulled the catback, and put track only wheels with racing slicks on, in a bit of a desperate move. So we know they will uncover all bases to set a time. If the times are as shit as they’re reporting, we can only assume there’s not much in it.
Agreed. I think I would need to see something like 11.0@125+ to even start thinking about it. With that said, Jones probably has close to what the supercharger upgrade would cost in his car’s performance mods, so it begs the question of what is the better option if you have a completely stock car (most don’t that would consider this right now).
If you could really do this for say $11k with a coolant system, and no other mods, and run a 11.3@122, that maybe worthwhile for someone that does not already have a crapload invested in their car. It’s basically $5k more than a stage 2 pulley/tune and exhaust that with no other mods maybe gets you into the low 12’s@113…
To get a stage 2 car into the mid-11’s, you’re looking at test pipes/HFC, lightweight brakes/wheels, intake, etc. Jones has headers, meth, and several other things that push him close to or even beyond stage 3 costs at the end of the day; with a lot more trial and error and effort involved.
I guess maybe another way to sum it up would be, there are two ways to get to the mid-11’s@120 range. Go stage 2 with every possible supporting mod, or go stage 3 with a coolant system and no other mods. At the end of the day, you might end up spending a little more on stage 3, but also have a slightly faster car with more long-term potential.
The issue they are going to run into is that most people that would consider this right now (I.E. out-of-warranty) already have a lot invested in performance mods. I already have $7k in engine performance mods installed on my car, and realistically the best case scenario for my car is high-11’s@115 or so. I’d basically have to eat the $2k I have invested in my current tune/pulley, and invest another $10k on the S/C upgrade, to get down to mid-11’s and gain 5-6 MPH.
Saki, Trust me lots of thoughts going through my head… I could do that mod and a few others, one of which I’m confident would match/beat the new blower but I’d 100% be the beta tester… lol The car will do better than 11.3 at 120 I have no doubt of that… How much better? Not sure until someone else runs it, logs it, etc. Not sure how soon I’ll see that so I guess I could wait and see… I’m just impatient and need something to get me juiced about racing and the car again, or just dump it to the wife… I want to run 10’s in this thing… lol
Another thing I was worried about was/is future support on tuning and such but it sounds like APR is committed which makes me feel better, however as we’ve seen that can change real quick…
I’m fortunate through hard work and such to be able to drop 9K and not have to worry about it but I don’t want to throw money away either… first world problems… decisions decisions…
Pete showed that a B8.5 could run mid 11’s@118 with only intake/pulley/tune/dsg tune/race gas/exhaust I believe. Maybe I have something wrong there, but essentially, minimal mods with good conditions (especially if no exhaust is needed).
The thing to me that is weird is they are talking about times ran in “3000 DA 100 deg F Alabama heat”. They’ve had the car for years along with guys like Ron who would have been happy to beta test. Instead, they blew engines, had financial woes, and passed the project back to Magnusson. Now it’s being pushed by loser shops who have no clue about marketing or S4 performance (that AZ thread created by the vegas shop was a joke and an embarrassment).
To me it’s pretty clear, if there was a worthwhile performance gain to be had, we would have seen it. Seriously, there have to be multiple guys floating around with beta versions…why no performance stats? But there are tons of guys with fu money who don’t care about being the fastest, just saying they are. Will have to see if guys like Josh and Ron take the plunge, that’s really the only hope IMO
Mike, Agreed… Shit I went 12.06 with tune, intake, and catback in killer DA…
APR not having a stake in the hardware makes me nervous and leary… The launch has been laughable and the dude in vegas has been the worst, doesn’t even know what kind of air filter our car uses and can’t do basic math… I’m pretty sure APR wouldn’t argue this but I don’t think we’ll hear anything from them honestly…
If I could see a set of logs with timing, boost, iat’s, etc it would make the decision much easier, but I don’t see that happening soon… I PM’ed Richi but haven’t heard back from him…
I also talked to a fellow in the vehicle division at Eaton with direct involvement in their blower program, and I’ll leave it at that… He said Magnusson bought way too many of these things for the project to just be killed and he told me that a while ago. So did APR say we’re not comfortable with this and Magnusson said fuck that we’re doing it you guys just provide the tune? I’m guessing it was something along those lines but that’s speculation.
What’s up people. It’s been a good LONG while since I logged in here but ron inspired me lol. I have mine being installed today. Someone hacked out of this unit so I jumped in. Ask away
What up, richi. Good to see you posting here again. I’ll let the others ask most of the questions. Only thing I really want to know is whether you plan on hitting the track sometime after installation. Thanks.
