Sorry for the dumb question, how do you determine its “good”?
Demoralizing Update:
Work was completed, and they did a test drive. Transmission fluid is coming out at the same rate from the bell housing as before the torque converter seal replacement. The mechanic suspects either:
-
a workmanship issue on the installation of the seal
-
new seal is defective
-
a separate seal on the transmission has failed and he misdiagnosed the issue. He mentioned that it should be better to identify since he cleaned up the bell housing before installation, as part of the installation process.
With the problems the mechanic had been reasonable, and is trying his best.
Fingers crossed again.
Small update:
Mechanic has the engine dropped again. He could not determine the failure point, or any obvious locations for a leak. Speaking to his transmission of specialist, the guy said he has seen an occurrence on a ZF where the torque converter is cracked. We are moving forward with redoing the converter. New converters at $2375 after a quick search.
Update:
Rebuild of the torque converter did the trick. No more leaking! Shop says it’s running like a champ. The shop dropped it off to the exhaust shop that fixed cracked flex pipe to address the other. I really should have requested that they install the muffler bypasses.
Now the but:
They said the dash analogue dials no longer work(temp, needles, rpm, speed), but the output sequence on VCDS doesn’t show any output issues. I suggested the look at grounding/common? He can’t find anything and the cluster was sent out to a specialist for diagnostics. Hope they find something simple to keep this project moving.
I’ve learned a lot about my appetite for stress over this car.
The TQ converter is a big pain in the back side. Great to hear you got it all sorted out. The TQ converter usually has the power seal go out and that can cause the issues.
It might be worth checking fuses and then a full code scan of the modules for electronics.

Got her back last Thursday. After the entire fiasco, the torque converter rebuild did the trick. Having everything else taken care of is a nice feeling, after that big bill.
Installed the seats I purchased from @jolio1994. Repaired a few broken bits from the set, and had the front seat bottoms reupholstered. Gave the carpet a good cleaning with everything out. Completely changes the vibe of the car. Next is detailing the outside. I don’t think I should call this a salvage car anymore.
I remember when I swapped my interior and was able to do a deep clean on the carpets. Now my 07 has a “newish” car smell. Btw; magic eraser and a light rub on the steering wheel removes a lot of the shine. Worked wonders for me.
Man your TC issue has me a lil stressed. I have oil all over my passanger diff housing area and the coolant hoses like you. I hope it is coming from a place unrelated to the torque converter
Did you rebuild your TC or buy new? Were you able to see this crack in the TC or was it internal? I did not think the TCs went bad on the 6 speeds but I suppose there is always a case

I went with a rebuild ($650 vs 2400). They were unsure where the leak occurred (hairline crack in the housing vs a seal on the TC itself going bad). The entire area you show in that picture was covered in oil, and was hard to ID. I have a few shots of the area before I took it for service. Revolv0’s Salvage Rescue S6
The guy who did the rebuild said he’s seen 2 other cases where the TQ on the 6 speed required a rebuild. It’s not common.
My s6 is one of those that has zero shifting issues so am looking to stay optimistic.
Where did you ship the TC to be rebuilt if you can share?
Hesitant to share the transmission place until I find the root cause of a P0741 fault… related to the torque converter or TC solenoid.
I also have a P0175 system too rich bank 2 - driver side.
I already have replaced all o2 sensors, and N80 purge valve… could the MAF be going bad or dirty? I’ll try cleaning that first.

Something that jumps at me as concern is the engine II P1084 fault below. Does that fault mean the O2 sensor is registering to rich of combustion from bank 3, or do I have a defective sensor?

On the highway today, and I noticed the car sounding funny. The funny turned into a full metal clanking noise, which lit up the dash. I didn’t have my laptop to diagnose the issue, but I heard it from the back of the motor.
The dash lights lit up and when I parked it, the motor stalled in drive. I fired the car back up again, to the current noise level it’s at now.
Oh boy, here we go again. Luckily, I already had the engine dropped scheduled (again again), to address the defective seal in the torque converter. Fingers crossed again boys.
Wow, that is some scary audio. If it’s from the top, look at the valve train. If it’s from below, think crank/rods/bearings.
Whatever it is, don’t run it until you get a chance to check it.

I bet for a rod on my side… it’s an awful noise, be prepared for an engine replacement…
Oh no. Good luck. Hopefully it’s just something simple on the exterior of the motor. You could see slight smoke coming from behind the motor so maybe a timing component? Godspeed.
Crank is broken , with play at the transmission side.
To personify the car may sound ridiculous, but it’s heart is broken. I loved it for the NA experience it provided, the noise, the instant throttle response. I don’t think I’ll put another motor in it, but then again will be erasing the car. The whole theme of this thread was the junk yard rescue. When do you put down an old dog?
Conflicted. I think I can get some coin for the JHMmintake, crank pulley, ecus, injectors, accessories. Anyone else have a suggested parts list to harvest before scrapping?
Dude that really really sucks. I just went back and read almost this entire thread to get an idea of the journey you’ve been on (you purchased yours right after mine I believe) and I really feel for you. Did this same shop who was doing your previous engine drops diagnose this?
